The Nationals announced that they have claimed infielder Cesar Izturis off of waivers from the Brewers. The team placed Mark DeRosa on the 15-day disabled list in a related move.
Izturis has a .235/.248/.333 batting line in 169 plate appearances this year. The 32-year-old has played all four infield positions with Milwaukee, and his versatility will prove useful in Washington. The Nationals needed infield depth with Ian Desmond and DeRosa on the disabled list. Izturis earns $875K this year and will hit free agency this offseason.
Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post first reported that the Nationals had acquired Izturis (on Twitter).
This is why the Nationals can’t have nice things.
nice option from the bench…
Was splitting time with Cody Ransom at SS for us, but wasn’t bad. Very good defensively, and he’d even been providing some offense lately. Solid pickup for the Nats, but they’d best hope they don’t need to be starting Izturis in the playoffs.
He’d be 4th on their middle-infield depth chart (or 5th, depending on how you rate him vs. DeRosa) so yeah, definitely hope he’s not needed for more than spot duty.
Yuni Betancourt is better
I hope this means the Crew is calling up Segura. May give us a reason to tune in and watch. Not much reason currently.
I’d be watching anyway, but it would bring a level of excitement, or an added incentive to spend three hours a day watching (losing) baseball. I can’t see who else they’d be calling up – they can’t let Ransom play every day at short, and they really don’t have any other options down in the minors.
Edit – looks like they already have called Segura up.
He will be in the lineup tonight batting 8th and wearing the number 9.
Nationals went into the deadline wanting to solve two problems, Catcher and MI depth, he’s solved both of those. While neither will bring much of any offense, that’s not what the Nationals need. Good job Rizzo.
Quick! Call up Alex Cora! I used to love watching those two up the middle when I was a little kid
