Links for Tuesday, as Tigers reliever Casey Fien returns to the Majors after spending the offseason in waiver wire hell…
- The home run milestone incentives in Alex Rodriguez's contract were the brainchild of Warren Buffett, writes Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News. The milestones start with home run #660; A-Rod currently has 594.
- WEEI's Alex Speier has the interesting story of the Dodgers signing Adrian Beltre in 1994 at age 15 by way of falsified documents, including the player's recollection of the situation. I swapped emails with Fred Claire, who was Dodgers GM at the time. Claire takes responsibility for the incident, but "had no awareness that Beltre's birth date had been altered in any way, shape or form" and "would never have approved such an act."
- Joe Stiglich of the Contra Costa Times talked with scouts about the Athletics' trade chips. At least one scout prefers Ben Sheets to Kevin Millwood.
- Dave Cameron's presciption for the Rockies in this FanGraphs article: move Brad Hawpe to first base and acquire Dan Uggla. Another good read from Cameron is his takedown of the theory that Russell Branyan will bring protection for other Mariners hitters. Speaking of Branyan, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says Seattle's acquisition "stunned" rival executives.
- Mike Axisa of River Ave. Blues looks at Octavio Dotel as a potential Yankees trade target, and prefers they do not pursue a reunion.
- Howard Megdal of SNY is "reluctant to deal any significant part of the Mets' future for a rental of Cliff Lee." Megdal feels that the team's window to win extends beyond 2010.

I still think Hawpe is the preffered centerpiece for acquiring Uggla. Something like Hawpe to the Red Sox, Uggla to the Rockies and the Marlins get prospects from the Sox.
Brian Culpin
How’re the Rockies a better team with Uggla over Hawpe? And, why would the Red Sox need a 3rd team involved if the Marlins are only getting prospects in return for Uggla? There’s no way the Sox give up any top prospects for Brad Hawpe…even with the injuries they have.

Calm down, I’m not a Sox expert, thats why I said “something like”.
Trading Hawpe for Uggla clears room in the OF to play Dexter Fowler.
You tell me which line up is better.

Sorry, wasn’t trying to attack…I just don’t really get the fascination with Uggla, especially at the cost. Hawpe is a FA after this season (pending his 10m club option) and Uggla is under team control through 2012. And to answer your lineup question, I would honestly prefer the first lineup (without Uggla) if you plan on contending this year.

Im curious to know as to why you prefer the first lineup to the second??? If you ask me, im taking the 2nd lineup and if this happens closer to the July 31st deadline then Tulo would be back in the line up so your looking at, FowlerHeltonGonzalezTuloUgglaSpilly/SmithOlivoStewartThat is no doubt a lineup that could contend this year. Yeah, Herrera has played great but if hes leading off for us in sept/oct we could be in trouble because i dont see him hitting .285-.300 then. Barmes has played great in the past month but the first 2 months were just gross and is way to inconsistant. Like you said Uggla is under contract thru 2012 and he could be a good mentor for EYJ and dont forget EYJ has played a lot of OF in the minors so while Uggla would be here he could be the 4th OF if Hawpe is to go in a deal for Uggla.

I don’t the rockies would want Uggla. They have Eric Yound Jr. maybe ready to take over the reins at 2B when he’s healthy

Marlins will never trade Uggla for Hawpe however
progmatinee
thats why I said a third team needs to be involved that would take Hawpe, be it the Red Sox or not.
If it takes 2 seperate transactions so be it, maybe the Rox ship Hawpe some where for prospects then turnaround and send prospects to the Fish.
But the Rox trading prospects for Uggla without moving some of their own payroll isn’t going to happen either.
