  • The Dodgers signed right-hander Steven Jackson to a minor league deal, according to Eddy (on Twitter). He appeared in 11 games for the Pirates last year, but got much more exposure in 2009 when he posted a 3.14 ERA in 40 relief appearances despite walking more batters than he struck out.

  • Ryne Sandberg has turned down an offer to return as the Cubs' Triple-A manager, tweets MLB.com's Carrie Muskat, and Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com reports that Sandberg won't be with the organization at all in 2011.  Sandberg was heavily rumored to take over managing the Cubs after Lou Piniella's retirement, but Chicago instead gave the job to interim manager Mike Quade.
  • A roundtable of Cardinals writers collected by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch discussed the Colby Rasmus trade rumors and the majority don't like the idea.  Comments range from "there would be no logic behind a trade" to "trading Rasmus would be incredibly stupid unless it’s an offer that’s so ridiculously good that it cannot be rejected."

  • Steven Jackson, Brandon Moss and Justin Thomas can all become minor league free agents after being outrighted to Pittsburgh's Triple-A affiliate, reports MLB.com's Jenifer LangoschSean Gallagher, who was also outrighted, can declare free agency on Saturday but Langosch says the Pirates will try to sign the pitcher to a contract before then.

Pirates Claim Brandon Jones Off Waivers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/01/pirates-claim-brandon-jones-off-waivers.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/01/pirates-claim-brandon-jones-off-waivers.html#comments Wed, 20 Jan 2010 09:20:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/01/pirates-claim-brandon-jones-off-waivers.html WEDNESDAY, 9:20am: Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says Jones was "claimed him with the hope of including him in a trade."  A trade could free up a spot for Octavio Dotel, with whom an agreement is close.  Recently-designated Steven Jackson could be dealt as well.  Pirates GM Neal Huntington recently explained to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch that Jackson's ERA (3.14) was not indicative of his skills (0.95 K/BB).

TUESDAY, 2:42pm: The Pirates have claimed outfielder Brandon Jones off waivers from the Braves, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Atlanta designated the 26-year-old for assignment last week to make room on the 40-man roster for Eric Hinske.  As Bowman notes, the Pirates have "routinely shown interest" in Jones.  Jones was mentioned when the Braves were pursuing Jason Bay in the summer of '08.

The Nationals were the only other team who had a chance to claim Jones before the Pirates grabbed him.
