Shawn Camp – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Tue, 10 Mar 2015 12:39:27 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Shawn Camp Announces Retirement https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/03/shawn-camp-announces-retirement.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/03/shawn-camp-announces-retirement.html#respond Mon, 09 Mar 2015 16:38:58 +0000 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=48019 Shawn Camp, who pitched 11 seasons in the Majors, announced his retirement today.  Camp worked in the bullpens of the Royals, Rays, Blue Jays, Cubs, and Phillies, topping 70 innings in four different seasons.  Camp pitched 541 career games in total, including an MLB-leading 80 for the Cubs in 2012.

“I would like to thank all the great organizations I had the privilege to play for during my career,” Camp said through a statement.  “I also had the opportunity to play for some tremendous managers and coaches as well as play alongside some extraordinary teammates. I have been a part of professional baseball for the past 17 years and it’s in my blood. As such, I’ll be looking to pursue other opportunities within major league baseball in the future.  Most importantly, as I transition to the next chapter, I will get to spend more time with my family who has supported me beyond belief over the past 17 years.”

Camp told me his ultimate goal is to be a pitching coach one day, but he’s open-minded to any opportunities that may come in.  He also has interest in working with young players in the minor leagues.

Minor Moves: Komatsu, Santos, Snyder, Bernadina, McCutchen, Diaz, Camp, Canzler, Hanson https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/minor-moves-russ-canzler-ray-hanson.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/06/minor-moves-russ-canzler-ray-hanson.html#respond Sat, 28 Jun 2014 01:38:29 +0000 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=39202 Here are the latest minor moves from around the league…

  • Outfielder Erik Komatsu has signed with the Brewers, reports Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (via Twitter). Komatsu, 26, started out with Milwaukee but was dealt to the Nationals in 2011 in a summer deal for Jerry Hairston. He was then taken in the Rule 5 draft, and saw brief time with both the Cardinals and Twins, before being returned to D.C. After being released by the Nats earlier this year, Komatsu had a brief stint with the Angels but was apparently released again.
  • The Pirates have traded outfielder Adalberto Santos to the Giants, according to the PCL transactions page. Santos, 26, was off to a rough .186/.234/.256 start in 47 plate appearances at Triple-A after performing well at each prevous level in the minors.
  • First baseman/outfielder Brad Snyder has elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A Round Rock from the Rangers, reports Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest (via Twitter). The 32-year-old Snyder was designated for assignment earlier this week when Texas purchased the contract of fellow first baseman Carlos Pena from Round Rock. Snyder, a converted outfielder, was relatively new to first base, but all 10 games in which he appeared with the Rangers this season came as a first baseman. In those 10 contests, Snyder slashed .167/.265/.400 and blasted a pair of homers in 34 trips to the plate. The first-round pick has demolished Triple-A pitching in his minor league career but never received an extended look in the Majors.
  • Outfielder Roger Bernadina has refused an outright assignment from the Reds and elected free agency, reports C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer (via Twitter). The 30-year-old has been unable to regain the form he showed in 2012 with the Nationals (.291/.372/.405 with 15 steals in 261 plate appearances). He split last year between Washington and Philadelphia before inking a minor league deal with Cincinnati. In 71 plate appearances, Bernadina scuffled to a .153/.286/.203 line.
  • The White Sox have inked righty Daniel McCutchen to a minor league deal, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reports on Twitter. McCutchen, a 31-year-old righty, saw significant time in the Pirates pen over 2009-11 but has only appeared in two MLB contests since (including one with the Rangers this year). He had a 7.05 ERA and 8.1 K/9 against 2.0 BB/9 over 60 innings (including eight starts) at Triple-A with Texas.
  • The Blue Jays have outrighted infielder Jonathan Diaz, according to the International League transactions page. Diaz, 29, put up a .158/.256/.184 line in 45 plate appearances with Toronto, his only MLB action other than a cup of coffee last year with the Red Sox.
  • Also according to the International League transactions page, the Phillies have released reliever Shawn Camp. The 38-year-old righty appeared in three games earlier in the year before being outrighted, electing free agency, and re-signing with Philadelphia. He currently owns a respectable 3.79 ERA through 19 innings in the minors, with 7.6 K/9 against 2.4 BB/9.
  • The Phillies have signed Russ Canzler to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, per the team’s transactions page at MLB.com. Canzler, who debuted for the IronPigs yesterday, spent the early portion of the season with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate. He’s a career .276/.355/.457 hitter in Triple-A and has 102 career MLB plate appearances between the Rays and Indians.
  • The Angels have signed independent league right-hander Ray Hanson, per the club’s transactions page. The 6’7″, 235-pound Hanson has pitched very well in both the Frontier League and the United League, posting a 3.59 ERA with a strong 129-to-40 K/BB ratio in 125 1/3 innings. Hanson, 24, made his affiliated debut yesterday with the Halos’ Class-A Advanced club and fired five shutout innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three.

Phillies Re-Sign Shawn Camp https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/phillies-re-sign-shawn-camp.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/phillies-re-sign-shawn-camp.html#respond Mon, 19 May 2014 14:44:03 +0000 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=38229 The Phillies have signed right-hander Shawn Camp to a new minor league contract, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports.  Camp rejoins the organization after electing to become a free agent last week rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A.  Camp is represented by Dave Meier.

Camp originally joined the Phils on a minor league deal in November and he posted a 5.40 ERA over 3 1/3 innings this season.  Philadelphia is the fifth team that Camp, 38, has pitched for during his 11 years in the majors, and his career numbers include a 4.41 ERA, 6.1 K/9 and 2.29 K/BB over 592 1/3 relief innings.  While Camp has struggled over the last two seasons, he could still provide value to a Phillies’ bullpen that has the fourth-worst bullpen ERA in the majors (4.42) and is in need of right-handed depth.

Shawn Camp Elects Free Agency https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/phillies-outright-shawn-camp.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/phillies-outright-shawn-camp.html#respond Fri, 09 May 2014 16:09:32 +0000 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=37976 FRIDAY: Camp has elected free agency, the team has announced.

THURSDAY: The Phillies have outrighted veteran reliever Shawn Camp, the team announced. In a corresponding move, Philadelphia called up fellow righty Luis Garcia.

Camp, 38, can refuse the assignment and elect free agency. In three appearances this year, Camp gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Though he avoided any free passes, he mustered only one strikeout. In parts of 11 big league seasons, Camp has compiled a lifetime 4.41 ERA in 592 1/3 innings, all in relief. His last effective season as a big leaguer came in 2012, when he led the league with 80 appearances and registered a 3.59 ERA for the Cubs.

Garcia is a 27-year-old who has seen his only MLB time with the Phillies. In 31 1/3 innings of relief last year, he put up a 3.73 ERA while both striking out and walking 6.6 batters per nine. Garcia was throwing well at Triple-A this year, going 13 2/3 frames without giving up an earned run while posting a much more attractive 8.6 K/9 against 2.6 BB/9. He becomes the latest hurler to receive a chance to settle a Phillies bullpen that has struggled to a 4.97 ERA out of the gate.

Camp, 38 next week, posted a 7.04 ERA, 5.1 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 2.74 HR/9, and 48.8% groundball rate in 23 innings for the Cubs this year before getting released in July.  He then signed a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks and posted a 2.42 ERA, 7.7 K/9, 2.0 BB/9, and 0.81 HR/9 in 22 1/3 Triple-A frames.  In 2012 with the Cubs, Camp tied for the MLB lead with 80 appearances.  He was useful that year, compiling a 3.59 ERA.  Camp's usage may have taken a toll, as his average fastball velocity dropped from 87.6 miles per hour in 2012 to 86.3 in 2013.

The 37-year-old veteran was released by the Cubs after being designated for assignment earlier this year.

Camp posted a 7.04 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 23 innings for the Cubs this season, thanks to an alarming seven homers allowed in that short time. He was significantly better for the Cubs in 2012 when he pitched to a 3.59 ERA and led the National League with 80 appearances.

Camp, 37, re-signed with the Cubs on a one-year deal worth $1.35MM plus another $200K in incentives this offseason. He appeared in an NL-leading 80 games for the Cubs in 2012, pitching to a 3.59 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 77 2/3 innings. This season has been another story entirely, however, as he's posted a sky-high 7.04 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9.

Both Guerrier and Strop were acquired in trades yesterday. Guerrier was acquired in a swap for Carlos Marmol, while Strop came to the Cubs as part of the return for Scott Feldman.

Camp, who turned 37 yesterday, pitched out of the Cubs’ bullpen in 2012, appearing in a career-high 80 games. He tied for the MLB lead in appearances and posted a 3.59 ERA with 6.3 K/9, 2.4 BB/9 and a 47.4% ground ball rate in 77 2/3 innings. The Mariners signed Camp in February, but released him toward the end of Spring Training at which point the Cubs signed him to a minor league deal.

Cubs Notes: Camp, Pitching, Bush https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/cubs-notes-camp-pitching-bush.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/10/cubs-notes-camp-pitching-bush.html#comments Tue, 23 Oct 2012 19:35:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/10/cubs-notes-camp-pitching-bush.html The Cubs flirted with the idea of trading Alfonso Soriano during the season and many have speculated that they could once again try to find a fit for him this winter.  Last week, however, Soriano said that he would be reluctant to join an AL club as a designated hitter.  Here's more out of Wrigley..

  • Right-hander Shawn Camp is the Cubs' only free agent this winter and team President Theo Epstein says that he is interested in having him back, tweets Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald.  Camp, who hooked on with the Cubs on a minor league deal in March, posted a 3.59 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 80 appearances last season.
  • Epstein added that the Cubs will likely pursue two starting pitchers, either through trades or free agency, this winter, Miles writes.  The deadline deals of Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm combined with the elbow injury to Matt Garza left the rotation short-handed last year.
  • The Cubs gave Assistant GM Randy Bush a three-year contract extension, according to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com (via Twitter).  Bush is entering his seventh season in the position and his ninth season overall with the organization.

FEBRUARY 6: The Mariners signed reliever Shawn Camp to a Major League deal, tweets Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle.  The Mariners announced the signings of Camp and Hong-Chih Kuo, noting they've designated catcher Chris Gimenez and outfielder Mike Wilson to open spots on the 40-man roster for the new relievers.

Camp, 36, posted a 4.21 ERA, 4.3 K/9, 3.0 BB/9, 0.41 HR/9, and 53.5% groundball rate in 66 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays last year.  His agent Dave Meier did well in scoring a Major League deal this late in the offseason.  Camp was a Type B free agent this winter, but the Blue Jays did not offer arbitration and will not receive draft pick compensation.  The Mariners have added to their bullpen on the cheap this winter with Camp, Kuo, George Sherrill, and Aaron Heilman.

Gimenez, 29, was non-tendered in December but then quickly re-signed to a big league deal.  Wilson, 28, hit .331/.418/.555 with 16 home runs in 388 plate appearances in his third pass at the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League.

Quick Hits: Aramis, Manny, Royals, Blue Jays https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/09/quick-hits-aramis-manny-royals-blue-jays.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/09/quick-hits-aramis-manny-royals-blue-jays.html#comments Tue, 20 Sep 2011 23:06:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/09/quick-hits-aramis-manny-royals-blue-jays.html Albert Pujols has a .304/.373/.551 line after tonight's four-hit performance, but the Cardinals' win didn't bring them any closer to the Braves, who still hold a 2.5 game advantage in the Wild Card standings. Here are tonight's links…

  • Aramis Ramirez told Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald that he has "probably" played his last game as a Cub at Wrigley Field (Twitter links). As Ramirez points out, he can't negotiate a new deal with the Cubs at the moment since they don't currently have a permanent GM. I took a look at possible suitors for the third baseman last week.
  • Manny Ramirez intends to play in the Dominican winter league for the Cibao Eagles, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN).
  • The Royals are promoting Kelvin Herrera, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (Twitter link). They will need to create 40-man roster space to promote the right-hander, as their roster is at its full complement. The Royals don't have any players on the 15-day DL, so there's no way of transferring a player to the 60-day DL for an easy fix.
  • Shawn Camp and Edwin Encarnacion told Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca that they'd like to return to Toronto in 2012. Camp hits free agency after the season, while the Blue Jays control Encarnacion's rights for '12 with an option that I discussed earlier in the month.
