Ron Mahay – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Sun, 27 Jan 2013 08:58:41 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Cafardo On Mets, Bourn, Abreu, Red Sox, Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/cafardo-on-mets-bourn-abreu-red-sox-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/cafardo-on-mets-bourn-abreu-red-sox-mahay.html#respond Sun, 27 Jan 2013 08:58:41 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/01/cafardo-on-mets-bourn-abreu-red-sox-mahay.html There were baseball people this winter who pleaded with their teams to go after B.J. Upton as a free agent and to trade for his younger brother, Justin Upton.  However, there also were those who said “over my dead body” would they have either, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.  In fact, officials in one AL East organization were nearly unanimous in the opinion that neither Upton was a fit for them.  The Braves obviously didn't share that view and will now enter 2013 with a remarkably athletic lineup thanks to the Upton brothers.  Here's more from today's column..

  • While Cafardo hears that the Mets' interest in Michael Bourn is minimal, that might be enough for them to land him eventually.  Many baseball people are amazed that Bourn is the odd man out in free agency. The Mets, Mariners, and possibly Orioles are waiting for a bargain deal and one AL manager reasoned that if a team can get him on a one-year deal, they might juggle things around to make it happen.
  • The Red Sox were among the teams that tried out Bobby Abreu. but sources say the Red Sox are unlikely to pursue him as the backup first baseman/outfielder that they’re looking for.
  • Left-hander Ron Mahay has decided to call it a career.  The 41-year-old says that he's now looking to get into coaching or managing.  Mahay last appeared in the majors with the Twins in 2010.  For his career, the reliever posted a 3.83 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 across 14 seasons.
  • The Cubs' Alfonso Soriano is on the trading block and could still be moved before spring training, as teams like the Orioles and Rangers look to make last-minute upgrades.
  • The Angels had some hope that Vernon Wells could be moved this winter, but those odds decreased after the Phillies signed Delmon Young.  “I think people will look back on his career and wonder, how could a guy who came into the league with so much ability let this happen?” said an American League scout who once saw Wells as one of the most talented players in baseball.

Minor Moves: Johnson, Mahay, Thurston, Bates, Garko https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/05/minor-moves-thurston-bates-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/05/minor-moves-thurston-bates-mahay.html#comments Mon, 14 May 2012 21:45:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/05/minor-moves-thurston-bates-mahay.html Tonight's minor moves..

  • The Rockies signed former Cardinals left-hander Tyler Johnson to a minor league deal, according to the CBSSports.com transactions page.  Johnson, who won a ring with the Cards in 2006, has been out of affiliated baseball since 2009.
  • The Reds released left-hander Ron Mahay, according to the International League transactions page.  The 40-year-old signed a minor league deal with the club in January and appeared in 14 games for their Triple-A affiliate this season.  The veteran last pitched in the majors for the Twins in 2010 and was signed and released by the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Cardinals in 2011.
  • The Twins have released infielder Joe Thurston and first baseman Aaron Bates, according to Dustin Morse of the Twins (via Twitter).  Thurston, 32, hooked on with Minnesota in late April after being cut by the Phillies.  Once considered a top asset in the Dodgers' farm system, Thurston has yet to see significant time in the majors outside of his 124 game 2009 campaign with the Cardinals.
  • The Rays signed former major-leaguer Ryan Garko to a minor league deal, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (via Twitter).  The first baseman spent time in Korea last year.
  • Orioles infielder Zelous Wheeler has cleared waivers and been assigned to Double-A Bowie.  Wheeler was DFA'd by Baltimore on Friday.

Reds Sign Ron Mahay, Clay Zavada https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/reds-sign-ron-mahay-clay-zavada.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/reds-sign-ron-mahay-clay-zavada.html#comments Fri, 13 Jan 2012 17:49:15 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/01/reds-sign-ron-mahay-clay-zavada.html The Reds have signed left-handers Ron Mahay and Clay Zavada to minor league contracts, as announced via the team's official Twitter feed.  Both deals contain invitations to the Reds' Major League Spring Training camp.

Mahay, 40, last pitched in the Majors for the Twins in 2010 and was signed and released by the Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Cardinals in 2011.  Despite these setbacks, Mahay said last week that he wanted to continue pitching.  Mahay has a career 3.83 ERA and 7.4 K/9 in 568 innings and has pitched for eight other teams in his 14-year career.  He is your classic left-handed specialist, holding left-handed batters to a .689 OPS over his lengthy career (including a .520 OPS in 2010).

Zavada posted a 3.35 ERA and struck out 52 batters in 51 innnings for the D'Backs in 2009, but hasn't pitched in the Majors since that solid rookie season.  He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2010 and appeared in 44 games for Arizona's Double-A affiliate (posting a 3.43 ERA and a 2.19 K/BB rate).  Pitching aside, Zavada is perhaps best known for his awesome, Rollie Fingers-esque mustache.

Cafardo On Red Sox, Soriano, Madson, Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/cafardo-on-maholm-saunders-madson-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/cafardo-on-maholm-saunders-madson-mahay.html#comments Sun, 08 Jan 2012 09:34:06 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/01/cafardo-on-maholm-saunders-madson-mahay.html Within this week's Sunday Baseball Notes, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that Kevin Cash has decided to end his playing career. Let's take a look at a few other notes Cafardo shared in his column….

  • Addressing the starting rotation, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington says the team may "buy low on some guys and create a competition in camp." One buy-low candidate the Sox are known to be eyeing is Paul Maholm. Cafardo expects the former Pirate to sign a one-year, incentive-laden deal somewhere.
  • The Red Sox may also have Joe Saunders on their radar. One NL scout weighed in on the southpaw: "You'd be afraid that he'd give up some homers at Fenway. But on the other hand, when you've got a guy who can pitch 200 innings from the No. 4 spot in your rotation, I'm telling you, that is effective because that's one of the bullpen spots in the rotation. I mean, that's where you normally believe you have to use a lot of your pen, and if a guy like that saves you, that's important."
  • The Cubs are willing to absorb most of the $54MM remaining on Alfonso Soriano's contract in order to facilitate a trade.
  • According to Cafardo, many teams, including the Red Sox, Cardinals, and Rays, will become more interested in Ryan Madson if and when his asking price drops. I have my doubts that Madson will become inexpensive enough for the Rays to get too involved.
  • 40-year-old lefty Ron Mahay says he feels great and intends to continue his pitching career. Mahay recorded a 3.44 ERA in 34 innings for the Twins in 2010, but couldn't crack the big league roster for the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, or Cardinals in 2011.

Cardinals Release Ron Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/cardinals-release-ron-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/cardinals-release-ron-mahay.html#respond Fri, 12 Aug 2011 13:36:53 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/08/cardinals-release-ron-mahay.html The Cardinals have released left-handed reliever Ron Mahay, according to their Triple-A affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds (on Twitter). The Cardinals signed Mahay and Blaine Boyer to minor league deals in July, but didn't call Mahay up to the Major Leagues. After signing southpaw Arthur Rhodes, St. Louis' need for left-handed relief diminished and they could afford to let Mahay go.

The Dodgers signed Mahay in February and released him the next month. By the middle of May he had already signed with Arizona and been released a second time. Mahay has a 3.83 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in parts of 14 Major League seasons. Through 23 1/3 minor league innings this year, he has a 5.01 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 3.9 BB/9.

Cardinals Sign Blaine Boyer, Ron Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/cardinals-sign-blaine-boyer-ron-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/07/cardinals-sign-blaine-boyer-ron-mahay.html#respond Tue, 05 Jul 2011 14:38:52 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/07/cardinals-sign-blaine-boyer-ron-mahay.html The Cardinals announced that they signed right-hander Blaine Boyer and left-hander Ron Mahay to minor league deals (Twitter link). Boyer pitched for the Cardinals in 2009 and though Mahay has pitched for eight teams, St. Louis is not one of them.

Both veterans have bounced around in 2011. Boyer started the season with the Mets, who released him in April. The Pirates signed Boyer soon after New York released him, then let him go in June. The Dodgers signed Mahay in February and released him the next month. By the middle of May he had already signed with Arizona and been released a second time.

Boyer, 29, has a 4.81 ERA with 6.2 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in parts of seven MLB seasons. He allowed 14 hits and nine walks in eight innings for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate earlier this season. Mahay has a 3.83 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 in parts of 14 Major League seasons. The 40-year-old struggled through ten appearances with Triple-A Reno earlier this year.

D’Backs Release Ron Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/05/dbacks-release-ron-mahay.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/05/dbacks-release-ron-mahay.html#comments Fri, 13 May 2011 13:13:18 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/05/dbacks-release-ron-mahay.html The D'Backs released veteran left-handed reliever Ron Mahay, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. They signed him to a minor league deal last month

Mahay posted a 9.58 ERA with 7.0 K/9 and 6.1 BB/9 in 10 1/3 innings at Triple-A Reno this year. The emergence of Rule 5 pick Joe Paterson lessened the D'Backs' need for left-handed relief. Paterson, the lone southpaw in Arizona's 'pen, has yet to allow a run in 15 appearances and has struck out 9 batters in 7 2/3 innings. Click here for more analysis of Arizona's remade 'pen.

Mahay, 39, appeared in 41 games for the Twins last year and posted a 3.44 ERA with a 42.5% ground ball rate, 6.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9. In 14 big league seasons, Mahay has posted 7.9 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 against left-handed hitters.

The left-hander was recently informed that he was not going to make the team.

Mahay, 39, signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers last month, but he allowed eight runs and 15 baserunners in 7 1/3 innings this spring. He owns a 3.83 ERA in a career that spans parts of 14 seasons, holding lefties to a .232/.303/.386 line.

Mahay posted a 3.44 ERA with 6.6 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9 in 34 innings for the Twins last year. The 39-year-old has always fared better against left-handed hitters, including in 2010, when he held them to a .219/.239/.281 line and posted 6.2 K/9 and 1.0 BB/9 against them.

Odds & Ends: Iwakuma, Heisey, White Sox, Feliciano https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/odds-ends-6.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/odds-ends-6.html#respond Wed, 08 Dec 2010 15:07:22 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/odds-ends-6.html One year ago today, the Yankees, Tigers and Diamondbacks finalized the trade that sent Curtis Granderson to New York, Edwin Jackson and Ian Kennedy to Arizona and Max Scherzer and Austin Jackson to Detroit. As we await this year's answer to that 2009 blockbuster, here are some links to enjoy…

  • Phil Coke, who was also in that trade, is set to move to the Tigers' rotation, but Detroit isn't desperate for left-handed relief help. Daniel Schlereth, yet another product of the trade, could be a cog in the Tigers' 'pen, so they're showing limited interest in free agents like J.C. Romero and Ron Mahay, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck.
  • The agent for Hisashi Iwakuma, Don Nomura, told the Associated Press (via ESPN) that the A's showed no respect for his client in their recent negotiations. The agent is clearly frustrated by what he perceives to be a lack of sincerity from Oakland.
  • The D'Backs have some interest in outfielder Chris Heisey, but have yet to approach the Reds about him, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic (Twitter link).
  • The Phillies are still interested in a potential deal with Chad Durbin, according to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
  • White Sox GM Kenny Williams tells Jayson Stark of ESPN.com that his team is "about tapped out" in terms of payroll flexibility (Twitter link).
  • The Indians officially announced their minor league deal with Paul Phillips today.
  • The Yankees met with Pedro Feliciano's representatives today, according to Newsday's Ken Davidoff (on Twitter).

Red Sox Interested In Fuentes, Mahay https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/red-sox-interested-in-brian-fuentes.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/red-sox-interested-in-brian-fuentes.html#respond Mon, 06 Dec 2010 18:09:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/red-sox-interested-in-brian-fuentes.html 6:09pm: Fuentes is looking for $6-8MM per season, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (on Twitter).

12:12pm: The Red Sox are interested in lefty relievers Brian Fuentes and Ron Mahay, reports Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.  The Sox clearly have a need for southpaw relief, and unlike Scott Downs, Fuentes and Mahay will not cost a draft pick.

I wonder if Fuentes will first try to find a closing job.  The Orioles are known to have contacted Fuentes' agent and can pitch a ninth inning opening.  Though they seek a closer, the Diamondbacks are not in on Fuentes according to MLB.com's Steve Gilbert.

Check out my free agent stock watch piece on Fuentes here.  My one-year, $4MM idea from October now seems light.

Examining Minnesota’s Bullpen https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/examining-minnesotas-bullpen.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/examining-minnesotas-bullpen.html#comments Fri, 22 Oct 2010 16:06:43 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/10/examining-minnesotas-bullpen.html It’s not easy to imagine a bullpen with more question marks than Minnesota’s. That's not to say the Twins don’t have quality relievers, it’s just hard to predict which ones will return in 2011. Kelly Thesier of MLB.com breaks down the team’s bullpen, which includes six free agents and a non-tender candidate.

Matt Guerrier, Jesse Crain, Jon Rauch, Brian Fuentes, Ron Mahay and Randy Flores all hit free agency but they won’t all return. Thesier says the Twins are not likely to keep Mahay or Flores and seem most likely to target Crain and Guerrier.

Crain, who ranks as a Type B free agent, says he loves Minnesota but would like the chance to close. That won’t happen if he stays put, since Joe Nathan should return from Tommy John surgery next year. Matt Capps, who saved 42 games in 2010, figures to be next in line for saves.

The Nathan-Capps duo promises to be effective, but it will definitely be expensive. Nathan earns $11.25MM next year and Capps will get a raise from his $3.5MM salary through arbitration.

If the Twins lose certain pitchers after offering arbitration, they could gain picks in next year’s draft. Crain, Rauch and Fuentes rank as Type B free agents and could each bring the Twins a supplementary first round pick. Guerrier is a Type A free agent, so the Twins would get two top picks if he leaves after declining arbitration.

Clay Condrey, who didn’t pitch in 2010 due to elbow problems, is a non-tender candidate. Despite all the uncertainty in the 'pen, Bill Smith & Co. head into the offseason with a more stable rotation.
