• The Dodgers signed right-hander B.J. Rosenberg to a minor league contract.  The 29-year-old owns a 5.72 ERA, 8.3 K/9 and 1.73 K/BB rate over 56 2/3 career innings, all with the Phillies from 2012-14.
• The Dodgers also signed Ramon Troncoso, bringing the right-hander back for a second stint with the club. Troncoso posted a 3.92 ERA, 2.07 K/BB rate and 6.4 K/9 over 197 1/3 relief innings for L.A. from 2008-11, highlighted by a 2009 season that saw him notch a 2.72 ERA over 82 2/3 IP.  He last appeared in the bigs with the White Sox in 2013 and Troncoso spent last season with the Royals’ Triple-A affiliate.
• The Orioles re-signed outfielder Julio Borbon to a new minor league deal.  After being picked off the Cubs roster in the minor league Rule 5 draft last winter, Borbon hit .288/.342/.356 with 34 steals in 44 chances over 512 plate appearances for Triple-A Norfolk in 2014.  Borbon, the 35th overall pick of the 2007 amateur draft, last played in the majors with the Cubs in 2013 and he owns a career .272/.318/.347 slash line over 863 PA with Chicago and Texas.
• The Reds re-signed catcher Lou Marson.  The 28-year-old first joined the Reds on a minor league deal last May but was limited to just seven Double-A games due to injuries.  Marson slashed .219/.309/.299 over 882 career PA for the Phillies and Indians between 2008-13.
• The Cubs re-signed longtime farmhand Jonathan Mota.  The infielder has spent his entire 10-year pro career in Chicago’s farm system, posting a .258/.317/.362 career slash line.

• Two minor league signings were posted today by the Athletics, as the club landed righty Tim Alderson and outfielder Zeke DeVoss, according to the MLB.com transactions page. Alderson, a 25-year-old former first-rounder and top-100 prospect, has seen his career stall. He has struggled to a 6.12 ERA in 50 relief innings this year for the Orioles’ top affiliate. DeVoss, just 24 years old, was a third-round pick in 2011 but failed to progress this year for the Cubs.
• The Angels have outrighted infielder Ian Stewart to Triple-A, according to the PCL transactions page. He was designated for assignment two days ago. It is not yet clear whether Stewart has accepted the assignment. (He has the right to choose free agency because he has previously been outrighted.)
• The Brewers shifted right-hander Jim Henderson from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day, the club announced via Twitter.  Henderson’s 40-man roster spot will be filled by righty Jeremy Jeffress, who contract was selected by the Brewers in a corresponding move.
• The Giants signed righty Mitchell Boggs, Baseball America’s Matt Eddy reports.  Boggs had a 9.50 ERA, 18 strikeouts and 17 walks over 36 relief innings for the White Sox Triple-A affiliate this season before being released earlier this month.  A reliable contributor for the Cardinals’ bullpen from 2010-12, Boggs developed major control issues last season, and the Giants are now his fourth organization in a little over a year’s time.
• The Royals released right-hander Ramon Troncoso, the club announced last week.  Troncoso signed a minor league contract with K.C. in March and produced a 4.30 ERA, 6.8 K/9 and an even 3.0 K/BB rate over 44 IP with Triple-A Omaha.  Troncoso pitched 30 relief innings for the White Sox in 2013, his first taste of big league action since 2011.
• The Phillies released utilityman Rusty Ryal, according to Matt Provence, media relations director for Triple-A LeHigh Valley (Twitter link).  Ryal, 31, appeared in 134 games with the Diamondbacks from 2009-10 and hasn’t been back to the majors since, playing in the minors for five different organizations since.  He signed a minor league deal with the Phillies in June.

The 31-year-old Troncoso spent the 2013 campaign with the White Sox, pitching 30 innings over the course of 29 appearances and posting a 4.50 ERA with 5.4 K/9, 4.8 BB/9 and a strong 51 percent ground-ball rate. Troncoso missed the end of the season with a case of pericarditis — inflammation of the tissue surrounding his heart.

The Dominican hurler spent four seasons with the Dodgers from 2008-11, appearing in a career-high 82 2/3 innings and posting a 2.72 ERA as a 26-year-old in 2009. He's struggled since that time but maintained respectable velocity to go along with his ground-ball rate, averaging 92.2 mph on his heater last year in Chicago. Troncoso has an ERA of exactly 4.00 in 227 1/3 career innings to go along with 6.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9. Left-handed batters clubbed him at a .360/.467/.620 clip in 2013, but he held opposing righties to a minuscule .179/.253/.239 batting line. He's had a noticeable platoon split throughout his career (.682 OPS vs. right-handed hitters, .822 OPS vs. lefties), but it's never been close to as extreme as it was in 2013.

Troncoso, 30, found his way back to the Major Leagues this season after struggling through 2012 with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate. He posted a 4.50 ERA In 30 innings for the White Sox, though his 5.4 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9 suggest that his ERA was somewhat of a mirage. He also missed a month with pericarditis — inflammation of the tissue surrounding his heart. Troncoso was eligible for arbitration and projected to earn roughly $700K, according to MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz. 

The 29-year-old Omogrosso allowed 17 earned runs in 16 1/3 innings for the ChiSox with 16 strikeouts and nine walks. Anderson went 1-for-18 in a brief stint with the White Sox but spent the majority of the season playing for Charlotte, where he slashed .224/.302/.400 in 235 plate appearances.

Chicago's 40-man roster is now down to 37.

• The Rangers have purchased the contract of first baseman Chris McGuiness from Triple-A Round Rock and created a spot for him on the 40-man roster by moving Colby Lewis to the 60-day DL, according to a team press release.  McGuiness will fill in for Mitch Moreland, who was put on the 15-day DL in a corresponding move.  The 25-year-old McGuiness is a left-handed hitter who was acquired by Texas from Boston as part of the Jarrod Saltalamacchia trade in 2010.  McGuiness has an .858 OPS at Triple-A this season.
• The White Sox have purchased the contract of right-hander Ramon Troncoso from Triple-A Charlotte, the team announced.  Troncoso, 30, signed a minor league deal with Chicago in January after spending all of 2012 with the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate.  Troncoso posted a 3.92 ERA, 2.07 K/BB and 6.4 K/9 in 197 1/3 IP out of the Dodgers' bullpen from 2008-11.  In corresponding moves, the Sox also recalled righty Deunte Heath from Triple-A, optioned Brian Omogrosso to Triple-A and placed Jake Peavy on the 15-day disabled list.

Gray pitched for the Twins in 2012, posting a 5.71 ERA with 4.5 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9 in 52 innings. Troncoso, who turns 30 next month, pitched for the Dodgers' Triple-A team in 2012. Purcey also spent the 2012 season at Triple-A, and he struck out more than one batter per inning at that level while struggling to limit walks. The 26-year-old Anderson appeared in ten games for last year's Cardinals team. Bell, formerly a top prospect, played in 21 games for the Diamondbacks in 2012. Tolleson appeared in 29 games with the 2012 Orioles, posting a .183/.227/.310 batting line as a utility player. Gartrell posted a .787 OPS with 20 home runs for the Braves' top affiliate last year.

Troncoso, 29, spent most of 2011 with the club's Triple-A affiliate, posting a 5.05 ERA with 6.5 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 35 appearances.  Over the last four seasons, Troncoso has a 3.92 ERA with 6.4 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 175 games for the Dodgers' varsity squad.

"A large-market team should be able to pay a top-notch setup man $4 million-$4.5 million. That's what the Royals gave Kyle Farnsworth, and at last check, Kansas City wasn't a large market and Farnsworth wasn't top notch."

Pouliot also names the Tigers and Rays as possible matches, and adds the Phillies and Rangers as teams who could be interested in Sherrill as well, though I wonder if the Rangers would want to take on his salary.

2:53am: Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that if the Dodgers are looking to move a relief arm, it's George Sherrill.

The Dodgers have several appealing arms such as Ronald Belisario, Hong Chih-Kuo, and Ramon Troncoso. However, when teams come calling about those three, the Dodgers instead turn the focus to Sherrill, who struggled in the NLCS and is set to earn up to $4MM through arbitration.

In return for Sherrill, who's saved 52 games over the past two seasons en route to a two-year stretch of a 3.02 ERA through 122.1 innings with 119 Ks and a 1.28 WHIP, the Dodgers would like to receive a starting pitcher.

Given those stats and the fact that he's under team control through 2011, Sherrill should be able to fetch some value regardless of a rising salary and a disappointing NLCS. What teams make sense for the former All-Star? Detroit is said to be looking for bullpen help, and the Rays could benefit from a more-established arm to close out games as well. Those are just names I'm throwing out there, let's hear your thoughts on the issue as well.
