Noah Denoyer – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 15 Sep 2023 21:25:59 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Noah Denoyer Undergoes Tommy John Surgery https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/09/noah-denoyer-undergoes-tommy-john-surgery.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/09/noah-denoyer-undergoes-tommy-john-surgery.html#comments Fri, 15 Sep 2023 21:25:59 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=786161 The Orioles informed reporters, including Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com, that right-hander Noah Denoyer underwent Tommy John surgery this week. Given the typical recovery timeline of that procedure, he will miss the remainder of this season and likely all of 2024 as well.

Denoyer, now 25, was added to the Orioles’ 40-man roster in November of last year to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. He had tossed 71 2/3 innings in 2022, split between multiple levels, with an earned run average of 2.89. He also struck out 35.5% of batters faced while walking just 6.1%. Given those strong results, it was natural that the club was worried about some other team plucking him away.

But he wasn’t able to carry those results over in 2023. He has thrown 51 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level with an ERA of 5.61, almost double last year’s mark in that category. His 25.8% strikeout rate is still decent but a significant drop-off from last year, while his walk rate shot all the way up to 15.6%.

The righty was never called up to make his major league debut and was designated for assignment in June. He passed through waivers unclaimed and was outrighted, sticking in the organization. He’ll now be faced with a long road back to the roster, as he will almost certainly miss the entire 2024 season. He’ll be 27 years old when the 2025 season comes around.

Orioles Outright Noah Denoyer https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/orioles-outright-noah-denoyer.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/orioles-outright-noah-denoyer.html#comments Wed, 21 Jun 2023 02:36:45 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=777252 The Orioles announced this afternoon that minor league righty Noah Denoyer went unclaimed on waivers. He has been outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.

Denoyer was designated for assignment a week ago. That ended what proved a fairly brief initial stay on the 40-man roster. Baltimore selected his contract over the offseason to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. The 25-year-old has spent the entire season on optional assignment to Norfolk, working mostly as a multi-inning reliever. He has pitched to a 5.04 ERA across 30 1/3 innings, striking out an average 23.3% of batters faced against a huge 15.1% walk rate.

He’d been much more effective at throwing strikes last season. Denoyer walked only 5.6% of opponents with a massive 35.4% strikeout rate in Double-A a year ago. He hasn’t managed to find that form so far in 2023.

Denoyer had never previously cleared waivers and has yet to make his MLB debut. He doesn’t have the ability to decline an outright assignment in favor of free agency. He’ll stick in Norfolk and look to recapture last season’s level to put himself back on the radar for an MLB bullpen job.

Orioles Select Mark Kolozsvary, Place Ryan Mountcastle On Injured List https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/orioles-select-mark-kolozsvary-place-ryan-mountcastle-on-injured-list.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/06/orioles-select-mark-kolozsvary-place-ryan-mountcastle-on-injured-list.html#comments Tue, 13 Jun 2023 23:04:28 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=776489 The Orioles announced a last-minute move before tonight’s matchup with the Blue Jays. Catcher Mark Kolozsvary has been selected onto the big league roster while first baseman Ryan Mountcastle is headed to the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 10, due to vertigo. In order to clear a 40-man roster spot, Baltimore designated minor league righty Noah Denoyer for assignment.

Kolozsvary is in position to make his O’s debut. Baltimore claimed him off waivers from the Reds at the start of the offseason. A few weeks later, they successfully passed him through waivers to keep him in the organization. He’s made 20 appearances for their top affiliate in Norfolk, hitting .162/.250/.265 with 26 strikeouts and five walks.

The 27-year-old backstop has never been much of an offensive threat. He’s a career .171/.283/.290 hitter at the Triple-A level. His glove secured him a 10-game MLB audition with Cincinnati last season. It’ll similarly land him at least a brief look in Baltimore behind Adley Rutschman and James McCann.

Mountcastle hasn’t played since August 8 because of an illness. Teams can backdate an IL placement for a maximum of three days. The O’s have decided to give the righty-swinging infielder at least another week to sort through vertigo symptoms that have apparently been plaguing him. It has been a tough season for Mountcastle, who carries a career-worst .227/.264/.421 batting line through 261 trips to the plate. Ryan O’Hearn and Josh Lester have gotten first base looks in his absence recently.

Denoyer landed a 40-man roster spot early last offseason. The 6’5″ hurler would otherwise have been eligible for the Rule 5 draft. He’d been coming off a 2.89 ERA showing across three minor league levels and the O’s were evidently concerned another team would take a shot on him as an MLB middle reliever.

His results have backed up this season, his first full year in Norfolk. Denoyer has tallied 30 1/3 innings across 14 outings (four starts), typically working 2-3 frame stints. He’s managed a 5.04 ERA. That’s largely a reflection of a massive spike in free passes. After walking just 6.1% of opponents last season, he has walked over 15% of batters faced this year. Denoyer’s 23.3% strikeout percentage and 48.8% ground-ball rate are still solid, but the newfound control issues pushed him off the roster.

Baltimore will trade him or put him on waivers within the next week. He’s in his first of three option years, so any team that takes a shot on him could keep him in the upper minors for the foreseeable future if they’re willing to put him on the 40-man.

Orioles Select Grayson Rodriguez, Four Others https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/orioles-select-grayson-rodriguez-four-others.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/orioles-select-grayson-rodriguez-four-others.html#comments Tue, 15 Nov 2022 22:56:14 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=754748 The Orioles announced they have added five players to their roster in advance of tonight’s Rule 5 protection deadline. They are right-handers Grayson Rodriguez, Seth Johnson and Noah Denoyer, along with lefty Drew Rom and shortstop Joey Ortiz.

Rodriguez is arguably the top pitching prospect in the game, making him one of the easiest additions on Rule 5 protection day. The former first-round pick could’ve factored into the MLB mix at some point this year, but a lat strain threw him off track. He did make 14 starts with Triple-A Norfolk, working to a sparkling 2.20 ERA while punching out an excellent 35.8% of opposing hitters. While there was no intrigue with Baltimore’s decision regarding the Rule 5 draft, it’ll be fascinating to see whether Rodriguez can crack Baltimore’s big league roster out of Spring Training.

Johnson was a supplemental first-rounder of the Rays during the 2019 draft. He landed in Baltimore via the three-team Trey Mancini deal at the deadline. The Campbell product recently underwent Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss all of next year, but the O’s like him enough as a prospect to give him an offseason 40-man spot. He can be placed on the MLB 60-day injured list at the start of the season to reopen the roster vacancy.

Denoyer went undrafted in 2019 out of a California junior college, but he’s pitched his way onto a 40-man roster. He’s a reliever who split the 2022 campaign between High-A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie. Denoyer spent most of the year in Bowie, working to a 2.61 ERA with an excellent 35.4% strikeout rate and a meager 5.6% walk percentage over 51 2/3 innings. He’ll be 25 by Opening Day and could factor into the big league bullpen next year.

Rom, 23 next month, split his season between Bowie and Norfolk. He combined for a 4.43 ERA through 120 innings with a 27.1% strikeout percentage and an 8.9% walk rate. A fourth-round selection out of a Kentucky high school in 2018, he was named the #18 prospect in the Baltimore system midseason by Baseball America. He’s a viable back-of-the-rotation candidate next year.

Ortiz went in the fourth round in 2019 coming out of New Mexico State. A gifted defensive shortstop, he split his season between the minors top two levels. The right-handed hitter put up a cumulative .284/.349/.477 mark across 600 plate appearances, pounding out 35 doubles and 19 home runs. He’s part of an excellent pipeline of upper minors infielders in the Baltimore system.
