Mike Shawaryn – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Tue, 27 Apr 2021 20:04:31 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Royals Sign Mike Shawaryn To Minor League Deal https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/04/royals-sign-mike-shawaryn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/04/royals-sign-mike-shawaryn.html#comments Tue, 27 Apr 2021 20:04:31 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=442678 The Royals have signed right-hander Mike Shawaryn to a minor league contract, per a team announcement. He’ll presumably head to Triple-A once their season begins next week.

Shawaryn, 26, ranked among the top prospects in the Red Sox’ system from 2017-19 but was hit hard when he finally cracked the big leagues in ’19. Through 20 1/3 frames, he was tagged for 22 runs on the strength of 26 hits (five homers), 13 walks and five hit batsmen. Shawaryn did strike out 29 of the 103 batters he faced (28.2 percent), but the control problems and susceptibility to home runs were an obvious concern.

Shawaryn didn’t pitch in the big leagues last season, but he spent most of the year as part of the Red Sox’ 60-man player pool at their alternate training site. Boston designated Shawaryn for assignment in late August, however, and removed him from the player pool after outrighting him. He was cut loose by the Sox over the weekend, per his transaction log at MLB.com.

Prior to that rough big league debut, Shawaryn had a mostly solid track record in the minors. He’d pitched to a mid-3.00s ERA at Class-A, Class-A Advanced and Double-A, and while he was hit harder in Triple-A, the results were still respectable, particularly given the offensive explosion at that level in ’19. All in all, he has a 3.79 ERA, a 24.5 percent strikeout rate and an 8.7 percent walk rate in 389 1/3 minor league innings. In their 2019 scouting report, Baseball America called Shawaryn a “physical strike-thrower” who could become a “solid medium-leverage reliever” or a back-of-the-rotation starter depending on the development of his changeup.

Red Sox Outright Stephen Gonsalves, Mike Shawaryn; R.J. Alvarez Released https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/red-sox-outright-stephen-gonsalves-mike-shawaryn-release-rj-alvarez.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/red-sox-outright-stephen-gonsalves-mike-shawaryn-release-rj-alvarez.html#comments Wed, 26 Aug 2020 19:42:35 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=231291 The Red Sox announced Wednesday that recently designated-for-assignment hurlers Stephen Gonsalves and Mike Shawaryn were outrighted after clearing waivers. Gonsalves was assigned to the team’s alternate training site, meaning he’s still in the 60-man player pool and eligible to pitch for the Sox in 2020 if they select his contract to the 40-man roster. That’s not true of Shawaryn, who has been removed from the team’s player pool entirely. Boston has also released right-hander R.J. Alvarez, who had been pitching at the alternate training site.

Gonsalves, once a top prospect within the Twins organization, has bounced from the Twins to the Mets to the Sox since last season drew to a close. He sports a career 3.46 ERA with 8.6 K/9 and a less-palatable 4.9 BB/9 in 125 Triple-A frames, as well as a 2.35 ERA in 184 Double-A innings. Gonsalves has struggled greatly in limited MLB action, although he never got much of a look in Minnesota and didn’t pitch with the Mets’ big league club at all. Arm injuries have hampered him in recent years, and it’s perhaps somewhat telling that he went unclaimed on waivers. Still, the Sox see enough in him to keep him on hand as a depth option in the player pool.

That much can’t be said of the 26-year-old Shawaryn, who was one of the organization’s best-ranked pitching prospects for several years (albeit in a poorly regarded farm system). Last season saw Shawaryn pitch to a 4.52 ERA with a lackluster 76-to-49 K/BB ratio in 89 2/3 frames with Triple-A Pawtucket. He was crushed for 22 runs on 26 hits (five homers) and 13 walks with 29 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings in his first taste of the Majors. Prior to that, he’d put together a solid track record, averaging about eight strikeouts and two walks per nine innings pitched with a mid-3.00s ERA in his time in the upper minors.

Alvarez, 29, was hoping for his first trip to the big leagues since a 2015 run with the A’s, but it seems that won’t come with the Red Sox. He’s spent time with the Cubs, Rangers and Marlins organizations since his last Major League action, including some time as a closer with the Triple-A affiliates for Texas and Miami. Alvarez has a 4.22 ERA in 179 Triple-A frames and has averaged nearly 11 strikeouts per nine at that level.

Red Sox Designate Mike Shawaryn For Assignment https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/red-sox-dfa-mike-shawaryn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/08/red-sox-dfa-mike-shawaryn.html#comments Wed, 19 Aug 2020 17:11:34 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=226182 The Red Sox announced Wednesday that righty Mike Shawaryn has been designated for assignment in order to open a 40-man roster spot for newly claimed infielder Christian Arroyo. Righty Marcus Walden was optioned to the alternate training site to open a spot on the 28-man roster.

A fifth-rounder back in 2016, Shawaryn was considered one of the better arms in a thin Boston system from 2017-19, but he struggled in both Triple-A and particularly in the big leagues in 2019.

Prior to a forgettable 2019 campaign, Shawaryn had a solid minor league track record. He’d never posted an ERA higher than 3.93 at any given level, and he turned in an impressive showing in a brief tour through the 2018 Arizona Fall League (three runs, 11 hits, four walks, 15 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings). Shawaryn has worked primarily as a starter in the minors but did make a dozen relief outings with Pawtucket last season. Shawaryn has a minor league option remaining beyond 2020, which could enhance his appeal to other teams.

For the Red Sox, this only further distances the organization from the crop of prospects inherited by new chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom — a relatively common trend when a new regime takes over a baseball ops department. The Sox have moved on from Sam Travis (outrighted, traded), Brian Johnson (released) and Shawaryn in the past nine months — all former top-10 prospects within the organization.

Red Sox Select Contract Of Trevor Kelley https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/red-sox-select-contract-of-trevor-kelley.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/07/red-sox-select-contract-of-trevor-kelley.html#comments Mon, 01 Jul 2019 22:59:18 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=164795 The Red Sox announced today that they will select the contract of righty Trevor Kelley in advance of tomorrow’s contest, as Alex Speier of the Boston Globe first reported. An active roster spot was opened by optioning fellow right-hander Mike Shawaryn.

The 25-year-old Kelley was a 36th-round pick in 2015 and was left unprotected from the Rule 5 draft last winter. He has generally succeeded in the minors with low home run and hefty infield fly rates. The soft-tossing sidearmer has been devastating against lefty hitters at Triple-A this year, holding them to a collective .077/.172/.115 slash. Kelley has allowed just four earned in 37 2/3 innings this year for Pawtucket, with 34 strikeouts and 12 walks.

There are a few other roster maneuvers out of Boston as well. Infielder Tzu-Wei Lin was activated from the IL and optioned. Corner utilityman Steve Pearce will remain on the shelf; his lower back issue evidently isn’t progressing as hoped, as his rehab assignment was cut off. Finally, Sam Travis is going back to Triple-A after 26th-man service in London.

Red Sox Select Mike Shawaryn’s Contract, Place Hector Velazquez On 10-Day IL https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/red-sox-select-mike-shawaryns-contract-place-hector-velazquez-on-10-day-il.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/05/red-sox-select-mike-shawaryns-contract-place-hector-velazquez-on-10-day-il.html#comments Thu, 30 May 2019 19:53:55 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=160375 The Red Sox announced a pair of roster moves Thursday, including the placement of right-hander Hector Velazquez on the 10-day injured list due to a lower back strain.  Taking Velazquez’s place is fellow right-hander Mike Shawaryn, who will reach the Major Leagues for the first time after having his contract selected from Triple-A Pawtucket.  No 40-man move was required, as Boston had an extra roster spot available.

Velazquez posted good bottom-line results as a swingman in 2018, with a 3.18 ERA over 85 innings (39 relief appearances, eight starts).  ERA predictors took a much dimmer view of Velazquez’s performance, however, as a 4.15 FIP, 4.63 xFIP and 4.51 SIERA reflected a modest 5.61 K/9.  While Velazquez struck out more batters this season, his walk rate rose and grounder rate diminished, resulting in a 5.97 ERA over 34 2/3 innings, with seven of his 18 appearances coming as a starting pitcher.

Shawaryn will provide the Sox with some extra rotation depth with Nathan Eovaldi still on the IL and Ryan Weber filling in as the fifth starter.  Given the uncertainty in Boston’s bullpen, there’s certainly room for opportunity for Shawryn to stick in the big leagues if he performs well.

A fifth-round pick out of the University of Maryland in the 2016 draft, Shawaryn has started 67 of his 68 games as a professional, posting a 3.60 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and 3.05 K/BB rate over 355 1/3 innings.  Shawaryn is credited with a 60-grade slider by MLB.com, which lists the 24-year-old as the 12th-best prospect in Boston’s farm system.  As per the site’s scouting report, Shawaryn “has a high floor, appearing to be a good bet to at least become a multi-inning reliever who could live off his slider.”
