Matt Treanor – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Thu, 04 Aug 2016 13:40:35 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Matt Treanor Retires https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/matt-treanor-retires.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/05/matt-treanor-retires.html#respond Thu, 08 May 2014 22:57:53 +0000 http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=37989 Veteran catcher Matt Treanor has officially retired from his playing career, according to the Triple-A International League’s transactions page. MLBTR’s Zach Links has confirmed the news (Twitter link).

The 38-year-old Treanor signed a minor league deal with Cleveland this offseason but didn’t get into a game for the team’s Triple-A affiliate in Columbus as he dealt with a hamstring injury. After a setback in his rehab and with the birth of his first child nearing, Treanor has elected to spend time with his wife (three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May) and child rather than pursue further rehab of the injury, according to Links.

In parts of nine Major League seasons between the Marlins, Rangers, Tigers, Royals and Dodgers, Treanor posted a .221/.313/.305 batting line and gunned down 26 percent of the baserunners who attempted to steal against him — highlighted by a league-leading 47 percent for the 2006 Marlins.

Minor Moves: Tolleson, Treanor, Pino https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/minor-moves-tolleson-treanor-pino.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/minor-moves-tolleson-treanor-pino.html#comments Tue, 17 Dec 2013 17:59:22 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/12/minor-moves-tolleson-treanor-pino.html Tonight's minor moves..

  • The Blue Jays announced that they have agreed to terms with infielder Steven Tolleson on a minor league contract with an invitation to attend big league spring training.  The 30-year-old spent last season with the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate, batting .288/.381/.426 with eight home runs.  Tolleson has appeared in 54 Major League games for Oakland (2010) and Baltimore (2012).
  • The Indians announced that they signed catcher Matt Treanor to a minor league deal with an invite to major league spring training.  He'll earn $800K if he makes the big league roster, tweets Paul Hoynes of the Plain Dealer.  Treanor had 122 plate appearances with the Dodgers in 2012, posting a less-than-stellar .175/.281/.282 slash line.  The 37-year-old did not play last season as he recovered from surgery on his left knee.
  • The Twins signed right-hander Yohan Pino to a minor league deal, according to the MLB.com transactions page.  Pino, who turns 30 on Dec. 26, spent the bulk of last season with the Reds' Triple-A affiliate, posting a 3.26 ERA with 7.9 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 16 starts and 15 relief appearances.

The players are now free agents.

Coffey's contract included a $2.5MM club option with a $300K buyout, Rivera's contract included a $4MM club option with a $500K buyout, and Treanor's contract included a $950K option with a $150K buyout. The team has confirmed the moves (Twitter link). For more on the Dodgers' winter plans, check out my recent Offseason Outlook post.

Dodgers Sign Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-reach-agreement-with-matt-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-reach-agreement-with-matt-treanor.html#comments Tue, 15 Nov 2011 18:18:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/11/dodgers-reach-agreement-with-matt-treanor.html The Dodgers added a catcher to the fold today, announcing on their Twitter feed that they've signed Matt Treanor to a one-year contract that includes an option for 2013. The deal guarantees Treanor $1MM. He'll earn $850K in 2012, with the option worth $950K ($150K buyout).

Treanor, 35, has spent time with the Marlins, Tigers, Royals, and Rangers since debuting in the bigs in 2004. In 242 plate appearances for Kansas City and Texas last season, the backstop hit .214/.338/.291.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com first reported that the Dodgers were eyeing Treanor, while Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports indicated that the two sides were making progress toward a deal and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter) confirmed the agreement. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times added contract details (via Twitter).

Dodgers Making Progress With Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-interested-in-matt-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/dodgers-interested-in-matt-treanor.html#comments Tue, 15 Nov 2011 12:51:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/11/dodgers-interested-in-matt-treanor.html 12:51pm: The Dodgers are making progress with Treanor on a one-year deal likely to be worth just under $1MM, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.

1:09am: The Dodgers are after a veteran catcher and are now looking at Matt Treanor, a baseball source told Ken Gurnick of MLB.com.  Treanor, 36, would serve as a veteran backstop alongside second-year catcher A.J. Ellis and rookie Tim Federowicz.

Treanor split time between the Royals and Rangers in 2011 and hit .214/.338/.291 in 242 plate appearances.

Tigers Notes: Ellis, Hill, Molina, Laird https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/tigers-notes-ellis-hill-molina-laird.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/11/tigers-notes-ellis-hill-molina-laird.html#comments Mon, 14 Nov 2011 23:40:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/11/tigers-notes-ellis-hill-molina-laird.html The Tigers had already locked up Brandon Inge, Jhonny Peralta, Joaquin Benoit and Victor Martinez by November 23rd of last year. Here’s the latest on the team as they start the current offseason more quietly…

  • The Tigers seem to believe they can find help via trades, tweets Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com.  The club has given up a lot in the past but they are willing to deal anyone but their top minor league prospects.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press that the Tigers didn’t offer contracts to Mark Ellis, Jamey Carroll or Aaron Hill, three middle infielders who recently signed two-year deals. Should the Tigers pursue free agent middle infielders such as Clint Barmes or Kelly Johnson, they’d likely be looking at a two-year commitment given the deals we’ve seen so far and the number of teams with openings at second or short.
  • The Tigers are considering Jose Molina, Matt Treanor, Ramon Castro and former Tiger Gerald Laird as possible backup catchers, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter). All four backstops are free agents who could give Alex Avila an occasional breather while keeping Martinez’s knees fresh so he can contribute on offense.

Rangers Acquire Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/rangers-acquire-matt-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/rangers-acquire-matt-treanor.html#comments Wed, 31 Aug 2011 14:25:51 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/08/rangers-acquire-matt-treanor.html Matt Treanor is heading back to Texas. The Royals announced that they have sent the catcher to the Rangers, the team with which he started the season, for cash considerations. Treanor joins catchers Mike Napoli and Yorvit Torrealba on Texas' roster.

Treanor missed the last 29 games after suffering a concussion at the end of July. He has been rehabbing at Double-A for the last seven games. Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star and MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan first reported on the deal, which brings Kansas City's 40-man roster to 39.

Treanor, 35, has a .226/.351/.306 line in 230 plate appearances this year and he has thrown out 26% of attempted base stealers from behind the plate. Given his career marks (.227/.318/.310, 26% caught stealing) that's probably pretty close to what the Rangers anticipated when they signed him to a one-year, $850K deal in December. Though Treanor doesn't project as a ranked free agent, he's not far from Type B status, so Texas may have the chance to obtain a pick for the backstop if they're prepared to offer him arbitration.

Rangers To Acquire Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/rangers-trade-likely-today.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/rangers-trade-likely-today.html#comments Wed, 31 Aug 2011 09:00:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/08/rangers-trade-likely-today.html 1:57pm: The Royals are about to send catcher Matt Treanor back to the Rangers in a cash transaction, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

12:50pm: A club source tells MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan the Rangers will "likely do something today."  In Sullivan's opinion, the team's biggest need is a right-handed bat.

Royals Rumors: Pena, Treanor, May, Adcock https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/royals-rumors-pena-treanor-adcock.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/royals-rumors-pena-treanor-adcock.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 15:35:12 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/royals-rumors-pena-treanor-adcock.html The latest on the Royals, who acquired Matt Treanor today…

  • It seems that the Royals will team Brayan Pena and Treanor behind the plate, according to Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star (on Twitter). This means Lucas May might not break camp with the Royals.
  • May is out of options and GM Dayton Moore says the Royals are "probably looking to do something" with him. A trade is the preferred route, according to Dutton (on Twitter).
  • Moore confirmed to Dutton that Rule 5 selection Nate Adcock will make the team (Twitter link).
  • Rany Jazayerli analyzes each pitcher on the Royals' projected Opening Day staff.

Royals Acquire Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/royals-acquire-matt-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/royals-acquire-matt-treanor.html#comments Mon, 28 Mar 2011 10:13:29 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/royals-acquire-matt-treanor.html The Royals acquired catcher Matt Treanor from the Rangers for cash considerations, tweets Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.  The acquisition fills up the Royals' 40-man roster, a press release notes.

Treanor, 35, hit .211/.287/.308 in 272 plate appearances for the Rangers last year, leading the team with 614 2/3 innings caught.  He re-signed for $850K in December to back up Yorvit Torrealba, but the Rangers acquired Mike Napoli in late January.  The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for the Rangers and also a 25-man spot, which makes it easier to retain Rule 5 pick Mason Tobin or Chris Davis.

The Royals' Treanor acquisition comes two days after veteran Jason Kendall told MLB.com's Dick Kaegel his tentative return date from September shoulder surgery is now late April.  Brayan Pena and Lucas May, both out of options, have been battling for Opening Day catching spots.  Treanor, by the way, was originally drafted by the Royals in 1994.

Rangers Re-Sign Matt Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rangers-re-sign-matt-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rangers-re-sign-matt-treanor.html#respond Mon, 13 Dec 2010 13:02:19 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/rangers-re-sign-matt-treanor.html The Rangers re-signed catcher Matt Treanor to a one-year, $850K contract, reports MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan.  He adds that they also outrighted pitcher Ryan Tucker, who cleared waivers and was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Treanor, 35 in March, hit .211/.287/.308 in 272 plate appearances for the Rangers this year, leading the team with 614 2/3 innings caught.  Treanor signed a minor league contract with the Brewers a year ago and was dealt to the Rangers in March.  He missed time in July and August with a knee sprain.  The Rangers signed Yorvit Torrealba in November, so their catching tandem is in place.

Tucker, a 24-year-old righty, was claimed off waivers from the Marlins in October when Rich Harden was designated for assignment.

Rangers Close To Bringing Back Treanor https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rangers-close-to-bringing-back-treanor.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rangers-close-to-bringing-back-treanor.html#comments Fri, 03 Dec 2010 16:07:58 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/rangers-close-to-bringing-back-treanor.html The Rangers are close to announcing that they are re-signing catcher Matt Treanor, who will likely serve as backup to the recently acquired Yorvit Torrealba, according to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com. Rangers GM Jon Daniels told Sullivan that he's "pretty confident that Matt is coming back."

Treanor, acquired by the Rangers in a trade with the Tigers on March 22nd, ascended to a platoon role with Bengie Molina during the Rangers' run to the World Series following a rash of injuries and ineffectiveness at the catcher position for Texas at the big league level. Treanor played in 82 games, batting .211/.287/.388.

Rangers Appear Content With Current Catchers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rangers-appear-content-with-current-catchers.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rangers-appear-content-with-current-catchers.html#comments Thu, 13 May 2010 11:13:14 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/rangers-appear-content-with-current-catchers.html The Rangers are content with the production they're getting from Max Ramirez and Matt Treanor, according to Richard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com. Manager Ron Washington told Durrett that he's pleased with the game calling and defense his current catchers provide.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported earlier in the week that the Rangers are looking at other catching options. Today's report doesn't necessarily mean Rosenthal's report is off-base, since club executives can eye opposing players even when they're content with their current club.

One catcher the Rangers definitely have their eye on plays at Triple A Oklahoma. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is working on his throwing, but his .343/.400/.552 line stands out, especially on a team that's getting a .193/.302/.266 line from its backstops.

"No one has forgotten about Salty," Washington said. "We know what he brings to the table."

Other clubs do, too, so it wouldn't be a shock if the Rangers were the ones trading from catching depth this summer. Rosenthal suggested the Astros – who could use some offense – and the Red Sox – who could use some defense – could look to acquire catchers. The Rangers could consider dealing with either one of those teams or any other club looking for a catcher.

Rangers Seek Catching Help https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rangers-seek-catching-help.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rangers-seek-catching-help.html#comments Mon, 10 May 2010 18:06:26 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/rangers-seek-catching-help.html The Rangers are looking for catching help, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal notes that the Astros, Brewers, Rays and Red Sox could also use reinforcements behind the plate. The Rays appear unlikey to deal for a catcher, partly because there aren't many backstops available.

The Rangers dealt for one of the few available catchers at the end of Spring Training, acquiring Matt Treanor from the Brewers. Treanor has impressed some with his game calling and defense, but Rosenthal says the team is looking at other options. Treanor, who has a .197/.300/.262 line in 71 plate appearances, missed most of last season with a bone spur in his right hip.

It may not be easy for GM Jon Daniels to work out a trade. The Rangers' sale is unresolved and has limited the club's ability to acquire players before. MLB prevented the Rangers from offering first round pick Matt Purke as much as they had planned to last summer, so the Rangers would presumably benefit from an immediate sale of the club.

MLBTR's Howard Megdal looked at the market for Chris Iannetta a couple weeks ago and concluded that the catcher could help teams at the major league level. The 27-year-old struggled in the majors this season and has since been demoted to the minors where he has posted a .303/.378/.667 line in 37 plate appearances. Iannetta is one of the many catchers the Rangers could inquire on.

Odds & Ends: Strasburg, Piniella, Ely, Marlins https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/odds-ends-marlins-stanton-mccann-bradley.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/odds-ends-marlins-stanton-mccann-bradley.html#comments Fri, 07 May 2010 21:54:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/odds-ends-marlins-stanton-mccann-bradley.html Jamie Moyer, we are all witnesses.  Some quick notes as we finish up the work week….

  • Stephen Strasburg allowed just one hit and one walk over six shutout innings in his debut for Washington's Triple-A affiliate, reports The Associated Press.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com predicts the Cubs' woes may drive Lou Piniella into retirement when his contract is up after this season.
  • The Los Angeles Times' Steve Dilbeck thinks the Dodgers erred in sending rookie right-hander John Ely back down to the minors so quickly.
  • Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald has some details of Florida owner Jeffrey Loria's chat with reporters today.  Loria dismissed any problems between him and manager Fredi Gonzalez, though Spencer notes that Loria "never exactly came out and said Gonzalez's job was 100 percent secure."  Loria was vague about when Mike Stanton would be called up to the majors, but the owner noted that the Marlins "don't want him to come and fail. If he's going to come here, he's going to come here to stay."
  • Speaking of Stanton, his name came up more than once during Baseball America's J.J. Cooper's chat with fans today.  When asked if he'd rather have Stanton or Jason Heyward for the next 10 years, Cooper's answer was "Heyward and it didn't really take any time to think about it," though that's more of a nod to Heyward's limitless potential than a slight towards Stanton.
  • Brian McCann revealed today that he is having more vision problems, and he will again start wearing glasses in the field, reports David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
  • ESPN's Buster Olney reports (via Tweets here and here) that the Mariners will still be paying Milton Bradley while he is on the team's restricted list.
  • Jean-Jacques Taylor of the Dallas Morning News writes that of all the catcher possibilities the Rangers looked at over the winter, little-regarded Matt Treanor became the team's "savior" due to his solid defensive and game-calling skills.  (Probably on purpose, Taylor doesn't mention Treanor's .619 OPS.)
  • Aaron Rowand, like Barry Zito, is also starting to live up his big Giants contract, writes Mychael Urban of CSNBayArea.com.  Urban notes that Rowand's early-season success may be due to a better offseason fitness regiment and a total swing overhaul.
