Rosenthal’s Full Count Video: Gonzalez, Torre, Millar https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rosenthals-full-count-video-gonzalez-torre-millar.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/rosenthals-full-count-video-gonzalez-torre-millar.html#comments Sat, 08 May 2010 15:45:07 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/rosenthals-full-count-video-gonzalez-torre-millar.html Ken Rosenthal's latest Full Count video is up at FOX Sports. Let's check out the highlights of this week's clip….

  • Given the Padres' success so far and the slow starts by some clubs who may be interested in Adrian Gonzalez (Mariners, White Sox, Braves), it looks for now as if the slugger could be traded in the offseason rather than in July.
  • If the White Sox made a play for Gonzalez, they wouldn't want to extend him for $20MM+ annually past 2011.
  • Friends of Joe Torre indicate to Rosenthal that the Dodgers' skipper may not want to return next year if the organization is still handcuffed financially by Frank McCourt's divorce. Rosenthal suggests that the Mets, Cubs, or Braves might end up being options for Torre.
  • Rosenthal questions the Cubs' decision to part ways with Kevin Millar, noting that the club could have used the 38-year-old's energy and clubhouse presence. The St. Paul Saints will be the beneficiaries of that clubhouse presence now.

Kevin Millar Signs With St. Paul Saints https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/kevin-millar-signs-with-st-paul-saints.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/05/kevin-millar-signs-with-st-paul-saints.html#comments Wed, 05 May 2010 14:06:53 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/05/kevin-millar-signs-with-st-paul-saints.html Kevin Millar has signed with the St. Paul Saints, according to a press release from the team.  Millar began his career with the Saints in '93 before the Marlins purchased his contract.  He'll presumably still work for the MLB Network as an analyst this year.

Millar was signed by the Cubs to a minor league deal in February, but released in March.  He posted a solid .274/.358/.452 line in 12 big league seasons for the Marlins, Red Sox, Orioles, and Blue Jays.  Millar banked about $20MM along the way, according to Baseball Reference.

Stark On Bell, Nathan, Oswalt, Dunn https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/stark-on-bell-nathan-oswalt.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/stark-on-bell-nathan-oswalt.html#comments Thu, 15 Apr 2010 12:56:40 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/stark-on-bell-nathan-oswalt.html Let's check in on the Rumblings and Grumblings of ESPN's Jayson Stark

  • One exec Stark spoke to implied the Padres may not be motivated to trade closer Heath Bell because he's under team control through 2011 and signed at $4MM for 2010.  Bell's salary could double in '11, though, and I'm not convinced the Padres will want to pay it.
  • Stark talked to a GM who thinks Bell makes sense for the Twins as a backup plan in case Joe Nathan needs a 16-month Tommy John recovery period to get back to normal.  Stark learned that a significant part of Nathan's salary this year is insured, so that frees up some money this year.  But again, will the Twins want to pay nearly $20MM to two relievers in 2011?
  • Should Houston's troubles continue, Stark wonders if Roy Oswalt would consider waiving his no-trade clause.  He says a friend of Oswalt believes the pitcher's preferred destinations are Atlanta, St. Louis, and Texas.  It's hard to see those clubs making a play for Oswalt, especially with his large salaries for '10 and '11.
  • Stark guesses the Nationals are more likely to trade Adam Dunn before the deadline than sign him to an extension.  Last we heard, ESPN's Buster Olney said there were no ongoing extension talks.
  • Twins catching prospect Wilson Ramos has been labeled as one of the game's best trade chips, but assistant GM Rob Antony says that "right now, we'd lean toward keeping him."
  • If he can't find a big league job, Kevin Millar could sign with the St. Paul Saints, where his pro career began.  Millar was released by the Cubs on March 30th.

Cubs Release Kevin Millar https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/cubs-release-kevin-millar.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/cubs-release-kevin-millar.html#comments Tue, 30 Mar 2010 13:42:22 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/cubs-release-kevin-millar.html The Cubs released first baseman Kevin Millar, reports Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune.  The Cubs will go with Chad Tracy for a corner infield bench role instead.  Tracy made more sense, given his ability to back up Aramis Ramirez at third base.

Millar, 38, hit .223/.311/.363 in 283 plate appearances for the Blue Jays last year, playing 386.6 innings at first base.  In an article Sunday, ESPN's Jim Reeves said Millar is on the Rangers' watch list.  However, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan writes today that the Rangers are not interested.

Rangers Searching For Backup Corner Infielder https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/rangers-searching-for-backup-corner-infielder.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/rangers-searching-for-backup-corner-infielder.html#comments Sun, 28 Mar 2010 22:27:48 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/rangers-searching-for-backup-corner-infielder.html The Rangers are looking to acquire a backup corner infielder before Opening Day, writes Jim Reeves of ESPN.com.  Manager Ron Washington had hoped that one of the club's young players – such as Matt Brown or Max Ramirez – would step up to fill the role, but that has not happened.

One Rangers source said that the team keeps coming back to Boston's Mike Lowell.  The same source indicated that Texas believes that they can basically get Lowell for the same player they agreed to deal over the winter, Max Ramirez.

Kevin Millar is also on the Rangers' watch list, though he may earn himself a bench spot with the Cubs.  Wes Helms of the Marlins and Fernando Tatis of the Mets could also fit the bill as corner infielders off of the bench.  Meanwhile, "super-utility" players like Houston's Geoff Blum and Kansas City's Willie Bloomquist are likely too rich for Texas' blood.

Cafardo’s Latest: Beckett, Red Sox, Twins, Lowry https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/cafardos-latest-beckett-red-sox-twins-lowry-manny.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/cafardos-latest-beckett-red-sox-twins-lowry-manny.html#comments Sun, 07 Feb 2010 09:49:58 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/02/cafardos-latest-beckett-red-sox-twins-lowry-manny.html The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo has plenty of rumors from around the league for us this morning, so let's round them all up…

  • The Red Sox are likely to use Roy Halladay's three-year, $60MM deal "minus $6 million-$8 million" as a guideline for a potential Josh Beckett extension rather than John Lackey's five-year, $82.5MM deal. The reason being that they have some concern about the long-term health of his shoulder.
  • If another team comes offering Beckett big money after the season, the Sox will move on just as they did with Jason Bay. They could then look into free agents like Cliff Lee, who they pursued at the trade deadline, or even Ben Sheets and Brandon Webb if they bounce back from injury problems of their own.
  • With all of their additions this offseason, the Twins' payroll will jump from $65M to about $96M as they move into Target Field this year. GM Bill Smith said it will be up to manager Ron Gardenhire to determine how they use Jim Thome, and that they did their homework on Orlando Hudson's left wrist, which has given him trouble the last few seasons.
  • Minnesota's payroll will be larger than the Dodgers' this year.
  • The Red Sox watched Noah Lowry's recent workout, but "don't appear interested in signing him."
  • Dodgers' third base coach Larry Bowa said he knows that Manny Ramirez still wants to play another three or four years.
  • Two big league executives feel that the Giants and Tim Lincecum will settle on a contract before an arbitration hearing.
  • One reason the Cubs signed Kevin Millar was to loosen up the clubhouse after the Milton Bradley fiasco last season.
  • Drayton McLane is reportedly seeking $700MM to part with the Astros, but it's tough to see someone coming up with that when the Rangers sold for approximately $575MM.

Cubs Sign Kevin Millar https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/cubs-to-sign-kevin-millar.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/02/cubs-to-sign-kevin-millar.html#comments Thu, 04 Feb 2010 10:40:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/02/cubs-to-sign-kevin-millar.html The Cubs officially signed first baseman Kevin Millar to a minor league deal today.  ESPN's Jerry Crasnick first reported the agreement on Monday.  The Cubs signed Chad Tracy last week, so Millar will compete with him for a backup job.

Millar, 38, hit .223/.311/.363 in 283 plate appearances for the Blue Jays last year.

Indians Notes: Pavano, Free Agent Options https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/indians-notes-pavano-free-agent-options.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/indians-notes-pavano-free-agent-options.html#respond Sat, 28 Nov 2009 21:57:07 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/11/indians-notes-pavano-free-agent-options.html Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer explains that the Indians would have been hesitant to offer Carl Pavano arbitration if they hadn't traded him to the Twins. After a healthy season, he could command close to $10MM if offered arbitration and the Indians are reluctant to commit that much to the righty, though they may end up bringing him back. Here's more on some free agents the Indians may consider:

  • GM Mark Shapiro is looking to add a right-handed hitting first baseman. Hoynes wonders if Robb Quinlan (.651 OPS vs. LHP last year) and Kevin Millar (.723 OPS vs. LHP last year) might fit. Either player would presumably be cheap compared to other options on the market.
  • The Indians are looking for an extra infielder. Hoynes suggests Ronnie Belliard, Alex Cora and Craig Counsell could be fits for the Tribe.

Can The Blue Jays Re-Sign Scutaro & Barajas? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/can-the-blue-jays-resign-scutaro-barajas.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/can-the-blue-jays-resign-scutaro-barajas.html#respond Tue, 03 Nov 2009 08:39:35 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/11/can-the-blue-jays-resign-scutaro-barajas.html The Blue Jays would like to re-sign Marco Scutaro, Rod Barajas and John McDonald, but retaining the free agents may not be realistic. GM Alex Anthopoulos told Shi Davidi of the Canadian Press that he's not necessarily bringing them back.

"As much as I like John McDonald, Rod Barajas and Marco Scutaro, there might be alternatives that make this organization better and are the right alternatives for this team," Anthopoulos said.

Scutaro is one of the offseason's most appealing free agent shortstops. He hit .282/.379/.409 and was a solid defender, according to UZR/150, so he's in line for a raise from his 2009 salary of $1.1MM.

"We'd like to bring them back," Anthopoulos said, "(but) everything has to fit with respect to what the alternatives are and with respect to what their financial requirements are. I'm starting to get a pretty good handle on where their expectations are with respect to the market and what they feel their value might be."

Scutaro will be a Type A free agent, so the Blue Jays will obtain two top draft picks if he turns down an arbitration offer to sign elsewhere. Barajas will be a Type B free agent; the Jays won't necessarily offer him arbitration.

Davidi also reports that the Blue Jays won't bring Kevin Millar back for another season. The 38-year-old hit .223/.311/.363 in his lone season with the Jays.

September Trade Candidates https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/09/september-trade-candidates.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/09/september-trade-candidates.html#respond Thu, 03 Sep 2009 12:28:20 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/09/september-trade-candidates.html We won't see nearly as many trades as we did in July, or even in August, but teams can still make deals. New acquisitions won't be eligible to play in the post-season, but they could still help their new clubs make the playoffs. Here are a few of the players who could be dealt this month:

  • Mark Hendrickson and Danys Baez are among the players known to have cleared waivers; they could appeal to clubs.
  • Kevin Millar has managed a .750 OPS against lefties in an otherwise disappointing offensive season, so clubs may want him off the bench, especially considering his reputation as a positive clubhouse presence. His teammate, John McDonald, could appeal to teams as a defensive specialist. He has a well-earned reputation as an excellent defender up the middle.
  • Buster Olney suggested today that the Rangers will look into infielders now that Michael Young is injured. Jamey Carroll could appeal to the Rangers and other clubs.
  • Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported recently that the Phillies have an eye on Nomar Garciaparra.

More August Trade Candidates https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/more-august-trade-candidates.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/08/more-august-trade-candidates.html#respond Wed, 05 Aug 2009 13:39:28 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/08/more-august-trade-candidates.html Nobody's been traded so far in August, but deals are sure to go through. ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick considers some trade candidates:

  • Doug Davis and Jon Garland
  • Heath Bell – An unlikely trade candidate, since he's sure to be claimed, but he could be dealt even if he's claimed (to the NL team with the worst record among all claiming teams).
  • Lyle Overbay – He makes $7MM next year, a deterrent for possible suitors.
  • Justin Duchscherer – Some health concerns remain, as he hasn't pitched in the majors this year.
  • Kevin Millar, Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Giambi – Veteran bats for the playoffs.
  • Jamey CarrollMark Teahen's another utility type, but he's less likely to be dealt than Carroll.
  • Carl Pavano – Just don't expect the Yankees to come calling.
  • Arthur Rhodes and David Weathers
  • Miguel Batista

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times looks into Mariners trade candidates:

  • Russell Branyan won't clear waivers, but the Mariners could consider dealing six weeks of Branyan to the claiming team for a decent prospect.
  • Like Duchscherer, Erik Bedard has to prove he's healthy before anyone will commit to him.
  • Baker expects the Mariners to try to move Adrian Beltre. They won't want to offer him arbitration after the season and risk paying him $14MM or so next year, so now's their chance to get a return for Beltre. They would almost certainly have to pick up salary in the process.

Cafardo’s Latest: Martinez, Boston, Pitching https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/cafados-latest-martinez-boston-pitching.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/cafados-latest-martinez-boston-pitching.html#respond Sun, 26 Jul 2009 08:48:57 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/07/cafados-latest-martinez-boston-pitching.html In his latest piece for The Boston Globe, Nick Cafardo reports that the Indians turned down an offer of Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez according to an NL scout. The Red Sox then countered with a package of Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, and an outfield prospect, but the Indians turned that down as well.

Let's round up the rest of Cafardo's rumors…

  • In addition to Boston, the Indians are also fielding offers from the Rays and Giants for Martinez, but aren't inclined to make a deal unless a team's best prospects are involved.
  • Cafardo runs through the list of other pitchers that "could be pried away," including Scott Kazmir, Cliff Lee, Erik Bedard, Jarrod Washburn, and George Sherrill. He says it'll take "a blockbuster package" to land Lee.
  • Aubrey Huff and Kevin Millar are also available.
  • The Red Sox will "dip in the (Roy) Halladay sweepstakes" if the price comes down, but otherwise will look for a righthanded bat that can play the outfield.
  • Cafardo says it will be interesting to see if the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers are aggressive at the deadline or take a pass, considering all three clubs are playing well right now.
  • The White Sox could pull off something big because GM Kenny Williams "has a bit of gambler in him."
  • It'll be interesting to see if the Giants' plans to add a bat are put on hold after the sudden death of principal owner Sue Burns.
  • Twins GM Bill Smith may add a middle infielder and/or a reliever before the deadline. Last night we learned that they were "deep into talks and talking composition of a deal" with the A's about Orlando Cabrera. The team might be able to stretch it's normal payroll with Target Field opening next year.
  • Cafardo proposes a "swap of underachieving Scott Boras clients," J.D. Drew and Magglio Ordonez.
  • While there is some uneasiness about there not being any substantive talks between the Nationals and Stephen Strasburg, those kind of deals can come together quickly. The signing deadline is August 17th.
  • The Rangers are unable to add payroll, which will hamstring their efforts that the trade deadline.
