Kenshin Kawakami – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 27 Jan 2012 19:26:45 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Japan Notes: Penny, Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/japan-notes-penny-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/japan-notes-penny-kawakami.html#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2012 19:26:45 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/01/japan-notes-penny-kawakami.html Some news about players who could be playing in the Far East in 2012…

  • Brad Penny is "weighing an opportunity" with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, reports ESPN's Jerry Crasnick.  Penny, 33, missed most of the 2010 season with a shoulder injury but rebounded to pitch 181 2/3 innings in 31 starts with the Tigers last season, though he only managed a 5.30 ERA, an 11 H/9 rate and a 1.19 K/BB ratio.  Crasnick hears from a source that two Major League teams were interested in Penny, but it's not clear if either team actually made Penny an offer.
  • Multiple reports out of Japan say Kenshin Kawakami is close to signing a one-year deal with the Chunichi Dragons (passed on by NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman).  Kawakami starred for Chunichi in the first 11 years of his pro career before signing a three-year, $23MM deal with the Braves before the 2009 season.  Kawakami posted a 4.32 ERA in 50 games for Atlanta (41 of them starts) and spent all of last season in the minors.

Braves Still Hoping To Deal Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/braves-still-hoping-to-deal-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/braves-still-hoping-to-deal-kawakami.html#comments Mon, 21 Mar 2011 21:06:55 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/braves-still-hoping-to-deal-kawakami.html The Braves are still hoping that Kenshin Kawakami draws interest from another team that's willing to take on a considerable portion of the $6.67MM he’ll earn in 2011, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. Kawakami lost his rotation spot last June after losing his first nine decisions.

He appeared in just three big league games after June 26th, partly because the Braves sent him to the minor leagues for five starts. The 35-year-old started today, but is not competing with Rodrigo Lopez, Brandon Beachy and Mike Minor for Atlanta's open rotation spot. Instead, the Braves will trade Kawakami or return him to the minor leagues.

Japanese teams were willing to take on more than half of Kawakami's salary as recently as last month and some MLB teams, including the Brewers, could use rotation depth. I examined some options for Milwaukee earlier tonight.

Japanese Teams Still Interested In Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/japanese-teams-still-interested-in-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/japanese-teams-still-interested-in-kawakami.html#comments Thu, 03 Feb 2011 14:45:04 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/02/japanese-teams-still-interested-in-kawakami.html Two Japanese teams are willing to acquire Kenshin Kawakami and take on more than half of the $6.67MM remaining on his contract, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Braves wouldn’t get a player in exchange for Kawakami if they send him to Japan.

The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham Fighters were linked to Kawakami earlier in the offseason and Braves GM Frank Wren acknowledged that he had "a number of discussions" about the right-hander's future.

The 35-year-old lost his rotation spot last year and even spent some time in the minor leagues. His ERA rose from 3.86 to 5.15, though he posted similar strikeout (6.1 K/9) and walk (3.3 BB/9) ratios to the ones he had in his 2009 rookie season.

Rosenthal suggests that the Yankees, who recently heard that Andy Pettitte will retire, could consider Kawakami.

Quick Hits: Guerrero, Kawakami, Johnson, Dodgers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/quick-hits-guerrero-kawakami-johnson-giants.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/02/quick-hits-guerrero-kawakami-johnson-giants.html#comments Wed, 02 Feb 2011 16:27:07 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/02/quick-hits-guerrero-kawakami-johnson-giants.html Some links from around the majors as the market for Vladimir Guerrero becomes a little clearer…

  • When I looked at possible destinations for Guerrero last week, I listed the Rangers, Angels, Orioles and Blue Jays. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports hears that the Rays are not in on Guerrero, which makes sense, since they already added Johnny Damon and Manny Ramirez (Twitter link).
  • The Braves would like to trade Kenshin Kawakami this spring, according to David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (on Twitter). The Braves have a number of starting pitching options without Kawakami, especially now that they've signed Rodrigo Lopez.
  • D'Backs GM Kevin Towers told MLB.com's Steve Gilbert that he considers Kelly Johnson's arbitration case a tough one, but hopes to "create some dialogue" before the sides go to a hearing. As our Arb Tracker shows, Johnson asked for $6.5MM while the D'Backs countered with a $4.7MM offer.
  • Longtime Astros right-hander Brandon Backe, who last pitched in the majors in June of 2009 and is recovering from a pair of shoulder operations, told Stephen Goff of the Houston Examiner that he is working toward a possible comeback.
  • The Dodgers signed right-hander Merkin Valdez to a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. The 29-year-old appeared in two games for the Blue Jays last year after spending parts of three seasons with the Giants.

Pirates Close To Deal For Kawakami? https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/latest-on-kenshin-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/latest-on-kenshin-kawakami.html#respond Thu, 09 Dec 2010 09:35:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/latest-on-kenshin-kawakami.html THURSDAY, 9:35am: The Pirates seem to be close to a deal for Kawakami, tweets Biertempfel.  He says money is one issue, as is the possibility of the Pirates moving Paul Maholm.

1:10pm: The Braves are trying to see whether the Pirates or Orioles will pick up more of Kawakami's salary, tweets Biertempfel.

WEDNESDAY, 11:39am: The Pirates and Braves are still discussing a Kawakami trade, tweets Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

TUESDAY, 2:41pm: A Braves-Orioles Kawakami deal won't happen, tweets Connolly.

12:54pm: The Braves appear destined to unload righty Kenshin Kawakami, picking up much of the $6.67MM tab.  The Pirates were linked to Kawakami yesterday, but Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review feels they may have cooled on him given the deals for Kevin Correia and Scott Olsen.  Biertempfel says the Orioles are in the mix; Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports that the two teams have talked several times.

Kawakami is not the only available Braves starter; David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets that they'd trade Brandon Beachy in the right deal.

Japanese Team Interested In Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/japanese-team-interested-in-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/japanese-team-interested-in-kawakami.html#comments Mon, 15 Nov 2010 09:19:20 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/11/japanese-team-interested-in-kawakami.html The Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks are exploring their options regarding Kenshin Kawakami, according to reports passed along by Jason Coskrey of the Japan Times (on Twitter). Last month it appeared that the Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham Fighters had interest in the right-hander, but that was before the Braves demoted him to the minor leagues.

Braves GM Frank Wren said this weekend that he has had "a number of discussions" about the right-hander's future. Last month it seemed possible that the Braves could get a Japanese team to pay as much as $3MM of Kawakami's $6.67MM salary.

Braves Outright Kenshin Kawakami To Double-A https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/braves-outright-kenshin-kawakami-to-double-a.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/braves-outright-kenshin-kawakami-to-double-a.html#comments Sat, 13 Nov 2010 10:38:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/11/braves-outright-kenshin-kawakami-to-double-a.html 10:38am: According to The Atlanta Journal Constitution's Dave O'Brien (Twitter link), Wren responded "We've had a number of discussions over the last couple of weeks. I'll leave it at that," when asked about potentially trading Kawakami or selling him to a Japanese club.

9:01am: The Braves have outrighted Kenshin Kawakami to Double-A Mississippi, reports MLB.com's Mark Bowman. The move gets Kawakami off the team's 40-man roster, though they are still on the hook for his $6.67MM salary for 2011.

The 35-year-old right-hander was solid during his first year with Atlanta, posting a 3.86 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 0.9 HR/9 in 156.1 innings in 2009. Things fell apart last season despite similar peripheral stats (6.1 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9), as he put up a 5.15 ERA in 87.1 innings and was at one point sent to the minors. Kawakami signed a three-year deal worth $23MM in January 2009 after spending more than a decade with the Chunichi Dragons.

Last month we heard that several Japanese teams were not only interested in acquiring Kawakami, they were also willing to take on some of his salary. So far GM Frank Wren's attempts to move him have proven unsuccessful.

Braves Rumors: Burrell, Upton, Jurrjens, Vazquez https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/braves-rumors-burrell-upton-jurrjens-vazquez.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/braves-rumors-burrell-upton-jurrjens-vazquez.html#comments Thu, 11 Nov 2010 10:46:53 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/11/braves-rumors-burrell-upton-jurrjens-vazquez.html The Braves’ main offseason goal is to add at least one outfielder and it seems like they’ll acquire one via trade, according to MLB.com’s Mark Bowman. Here’s the latest on the Braves’ search for an outfielder plus other hot stove notes:

  • The Braves appear to have shown interest in Pat Burrell, but he may be too expensive for Atlanta. One reason Burrell fits in Atlanta: he’s right-handed and the Braves are looking to complement the team’s lefty-heavy lineup.
  • B.J. Upton may be available, but the Braves don’t seem interested in taking a chance on the Rays center fielder.
  • The Braves will have a better idea of their spending power once they determine whether they can trade Kenshin Kawakami. Multiple Japanese teams showed interest in the right-hander earlier in the offseason.
  • Not surprisingly, the Braves seem reluctant to consider trading Jair Jurrjens
  • Javier Vazquez will become a target if they need to fill a rotation spot. Vazquez excelled in Atlanta in 2009, but the Braves already have Jurrjens, Kawakami, Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson, Derek Lowe and Mike Minor.

Multiple Japanese Teams Interested In Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/multiple-japanese-teams-interested-in-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/multiple-japanese-teams-interested-in-kawakami.html#comments Thu, 21 Oct 2010 19:52:13 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/10/multiple-japanese-teams-interested-in-kawakami.html A Japanese team has shown a "strong interest" in acquiring Kenshin Kawakami from the Braves, according to MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Bowman writes that a Japanese reporter indicated that the Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham Fighters are interested in Kawakami. But there may be an even more attractive Japanese suitor making a play for the Atlanta right-hander.

Kawakami is entering the final season of a three-year, $23MM deal he signed with the Braves prior to the 2009 campaign. The unknown Japanese club interested in Kawakami is reportedly willing to pay Atlanta approximately $3MM of the righty's $6.67MM salary for 2011.

The 35-year-old played for the Chunichi Dragons prior to signing with the Braves. In two big league seasons, he has appeared in 50 games for Atlanta, recording a 4.32 ERA over 243.2 innings. While his ERA ballooned to 5.15 this season, his peripherals (6.1 K/9, 3.3 BB/9, 1.0 HR/9) were nearly identical to his 2009 numbers.

Braves Prefer To Keep Arms, Hope To Add Bat https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/braves-rumors-pitching-gonzalez-free-agents.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/braves-rumors-pitching-gonzalez-free-agents.html#comments Thu, 14 Oct 2010 13:50:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/10/braves-rumors-pitching-gonzalez-free-agents.html The Bobby Cox era is over and the Braves are preparing for their first season under Fredi Gonzalez. GM Frank Wren says Gonzalez is "perfect" for the team, but the precise composition of next year's roster has yet to be determined.

Some, myself included, have speculated that the Braves could deal a starting pitcher away to address other needs, but Wren told David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he'll be reluctant to trade pitching depth. Kenshin Kawakami and Derek Lowe would be potential trade chips if the Braves decided to change their stance and Jeff Schultz of the Journal-Constitution wonders if the Braves would deal Jair Jurrjens.

The Braves would like to add a right-handed hitting bat to the outfield this offseason. While Wren didn't rule out free agents Jayson Werth (bats right) or Carl Crawford (bats left), he noted that both are likely to be expensive. Wren also noted that the Braves are considering many candidates as they search for a new hitting coach (all links from Twitter).

Chone Figgins & Kenshin Kawakami https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/08/chone-figgins-kenshin-kawakami.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/08/chone-figgins-kenshin-kawakami.html#respond Fri, 13 Aug 2010 09:45:01 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/08/chone-figgins-kenshin-kawakami.html The Braves lost Chipper Jones to a season-ending injury, so they’ll now give some thought to players outside the organization. Dave Cameron of U.S.S. Mariner believes the Mariners "should be focusing on future wins," so he suggests a Chone Figgins for Kenshin Kawakami trade.

Figgins has more than $28MM remaining on his contract, so the Braves would presumably want salary relief in any deal. Could Atlanta ship Kawakami to Seattle for Figgins? Cameron suggests that would be a good deal for Seattle. Let’s consider the possibility, starting with the two players:

Figgins

  • He earns $2.25MM before the end of the season, $9MM in 2011, $9MM in 2012 and $8MM in 2013. There's a vesting option for 2014.
  • The 32-year-old has hit .253/.343/.303 in 494 plate appearances with 30 steals in 38 attempts.
  • In his last 15 games, Figgins is batting .397/.426/.500.
  • Among qualified hitters, only Cesar Izturis has a lower slugging percentage
  • Figgins has played exclusively at second base this year, but can also play third
  • Recent UZR data suggests Figgins is a strong defender at third, but below average at second.
  • About 17% of 2,000-plus MLBTR readers believe the Braves will acquire Figgins.

Kawakami

  • He earns $1.9MM before the end of this season and $6.7MM in 2011.
  • He has a 4.75 ERA in 83.1 innings with 6.2 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9.
  • The Braves, who removed Kawakami from the rotation in June, barely used him as a reliever, so they shipped him to the minors, where he'll build stamina in case the team needs him.

The Braves have Tim Hudson, Tommy Hanson, Jair Jurrjens, Mike Minor and Derek Lowe in their rotation and appear to lack faith in Kawakami. He is expendable and the Braves could use an infielder, though Omar Infante, Martin Prado, Brooks Conrad and Eric Hinske give the club enough flexibility to get by without making a move.

The first place Braves want to win now, especially since it's Bobby Cox's final season as manager. Swapping a player they don't rely on at all for Figgins would probably help the team in 2010. Figgins has next to no power and has a substantial amount remaining on his contract, but has been an above-average player for a while and was fantastic as recently as last year.

The Mariners wouldn't necessarily improve their chances of winning now if they sent Figgins to Atlanta for Kawakami, but, as Cameron points out, it probably makes sense for the team to focus on winning in 2012. Shedding most or all of Figgins' contract would allow them to spend on other needs. This hypothetical deal would help the win-now Braves in the short term and the win-later Mariners in the long term, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the clubs consider this swap.

Javier Vazquez Trade Reactions https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/javier-vazquez-trade-reactions.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/javier-vazquez-trade-reactions.html#respond Tue, 22 Dec 2009 16:31:28 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/javier-vazquez-trade-reactions.html Javier Vazquez was traded for the fifth time in his 12-season career today, and we've collected reactions.

  • Braves GM Frank Wren told reporters that Melky Cabrera is a nice fit, but he's still looking for offense.  David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the $8MM or so saved by the Braves probably won't go toward Jason Bay or Matt Holliday, but he wonders if they'll try for Adrian Gonzalez.  We've got more on potential bats for the Braves here.
  • ESPN's Keith Law says the Braves were "lucky to get a young pitcher as good as Arodys Vizcaino," as he feels this trade was basically a salary dump.  Law believes the Braves' Kenshin Kawakami signing in January was unnecessary, and that led to this Vazquez trade.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post has pretty much every Yankees angle covered.  Vazquez was simply the best available option for them.  The Yanks' payroll is up around $198MM against a $200MM target, though trading Sergio Mitre and/or Chad Gaudin would free up a little cash.  The Yanks will try to snag a veteran left fielder at a bargain rate, and aren't considering Holliday or Bay.
  • Yankees GM Brian Cashman confirmed that he won't be adding a big piece (MLB.com's Bryan Hoch reporting).  Chad Jennings of The LoHud Journal has quotes from Vazquez from the conference call.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Rays, Orioles, and Blue Jays should just give up now.

Twitter Rumors: Doumit, Mahay, Wolf, Jenkins https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/twitter-rumors-myers-astros-lyon.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/twitter-rumors-myers-astros-lyon.html#respond Mon, 07 Dec 2009 16:09:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/twitter-rumors-myers-astros-lyon.html Collecting some tweets I couldn't quite turn into posts…

  • Four unknown teams are in on Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit, says Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
  • The Nationals have interest in free agent catcher Brad Ausmus, says MLB.com's Bill Ladson.
  • The Red Sox have interest in free agent lefty Ron Mahay, says Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. The 38-year-old posted a 4.29 ERA, 7.5 K/9, and 3.9 BB/9 in 50.3 innings for the Royals and Twins this year.  Two years ago he was quite a hot commodity on the free agent market.
  • ESPN's Jerry Crasnick says Brett Myers is seeking a two-year deal.  The Rangers and other teams are interested at one year.  Crasnick wrote a few days ago that the Astros are also interested, while Andrew Baggarly named the Giants as a suitor today.
  • Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times shoots down Danny Knobler's rumor that the Pirates have interest in Juan Pierre.  Nonetheless, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro tweets of interest from the Pirates, White Sox, and a third team.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Yankees want to resolve the Andy Pettitte/Johnny Damon situations before moving on to Hideki Matsui and other starting pitcher options.
  • White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune that the Sox are not in the market for a pure DH.
  • The Brewers are making a "strong run" at Randy Wolf, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
  • Ruben Amaro Jr.'s comment that "those are guys we will probably count on" implies relievers Chad Durbin and Clay Condrey will be tendered contracts by the Phillies (Andy Martino reporting).
  • Crasnick says Geoff Jenkins wants to make a comeback in 2010 and has been working out at first base and outfield in hopes of landing a bench role.
  • Crasnick says to expect the Cubs to tender a contract to Mike Fontenot on Saturday.
  • Bill Shanks quoting Braves manager Bobby Cox: "clubs are knocking on the door for Kelly Johnson."  I imagine Johnson will be dealt by Saturday.
  • ESPN's Gordon Edes says that while Red Sox owner John Henry is a big fan of Miguel Cabrera from their Marlins days, the Red Sox "don't have the Major League-ready position players Detroit wants in return."
  • Crasnick expects Elmer Dessens to re-sign with the Mets, though the pitcher has talked to the Dodgers and Padres.
  • Yahoo's Steve Henson says the Braves want to move Derek Lowe or Javier Vazquez, but not Kenshin Kawakami.
  • Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer says the Phillies will meet with Chan Ho Park's agent today "and attempt to resolve their differences over Park's value."  The Phils did not offer arbitration to Park, a Type B free agent.  Park craves another shot at starting, which won't happen in Philly.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Phillies like Brandon Lyon, but aren't "willing to pay the price for him."  Lyon is said to be seeking a multiyear deal.  He is expected to turn down the Tigers' offer of arbitration today.  The Yankees have been named as another suitor.
  • Crasnick says the Astros "have very little money to spend, unless Drayton McLane suddenly has a change of heart."
