Jose Mesa – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Wed, 28 Mar 2018 16:04:16 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Orioles Return Rule 5 Pick Jose Mesa Jr. To Yankees https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/orioles-return-rule-5-pick-jose-mesa-jr-to-yankees.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/orioles-return-rule-5-pick-jose-mesa-jr-to-yankees.html#comments Wed, 28 Mar 2018 16:03:37 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=118491 The Orioles announced today that Rule 5 pick Jose Mesa Jr. has been returned to the Yankees organization. He’ll report to Triple-A.

Mesa, a 24-year-old righty, had recently been designated for assignment. Having cleared waivers, he’ll head back to the organization that selected him in the 24th round of the 2012 draft.

Baltimore had considered Mesa for a bullpen spot along with two other Rule 5 pitchers, but elected against keeping him. Now, he’ll wait for an opportunity in a loaded New York pen.

Mesa did not turn in a compelling showing this spring, but has shown his share of promise in the minors. Last year, he pitched to a 1.93 ERA with 10.8 K/9 and 3.4 BB/9 in 84 innings over 29 appearances — including eight starts — at the High-A and Double-A levels.

Orioles Designate Jose Mesa Jr., Announce Alex Cobb Signing https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/orioles-designate-jose-mesa-jr-announce-alex-cobb-signing.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/orioles-designate-jose-mesa-jr-announce-alex-cobb-signing.html#comments Wed, 21 Mar 2018 17:00:30 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=117609 The Orioles have designated Rule 5 righty Jose Mesa Jr. for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to veteran starter Alex Cobb, whose four-year contract is now official.

Mesa, 24, was the last of three pitchers taken by the Baltimore organization in the most recent Rule 5 draft. Obtaining his rights in full from the Yankees would have required that the O’s carry him for all of the upcoming season on the active roster. Now, unless his Rule 5 rights are either traded for or claimed off waivers, Mesa will be offered back to the Yanks.

The young hurler obviously showed enough to draw interest from the Orioles after being left unprotected. In 84 innings at the High-A and Double-A levels last year, he allowed just 18 earned runs on 48 hits and 32 walks while recording 101 strikeouts. But it seems he’ll need some more seasoning before trying out the majors. Mesa struggled in his chances this spring, recording five strikeouts and seven walks in 7 2/3 innings.

Ruben Amaro Jr. Chats Phillies https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/01/ruben-amaro-jr.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/01/ruben-amaro-jr.html#respond Fri, 11 Jan 2008 16:25:01 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2008/01/ruben-amaro-jr.html Phils assistant GM Ruben Amaro Jr. recently did a chat at MLB.com.  I remember Frank Wren did one in mid-November; this is a cool trend.

  • Amaro admits that the Phils are still considering upgrading at third base.  They’ve had discussions about Pedro Feliz as one such option, while Morgan Ensberg is not on the radar.
  • It’s unlikely that the Phillies re-sign Jose Mesa.
  • Also unlikely would be a Bartolo Colon signing.  On the other hand, discussions with Scott Boras about Kyle Lohse are ongoing.

Tigers Sign Jose Mesa https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/12/tigers-sign-jos.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/12/tigers-sign-jos.html#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2006 08:55:02 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2006/12/tigers-sign-jos.html ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reports that the Tigers have signed Jose Mesa to a one-year deal for about $2.5MM.  He turns 41 next May.

Joe Table switched to relief in ’94 and then had some glory years as the Tribe’s closer.  After that he bounced around to about eight million teams with varying success.

With an awful K/BB of 1.08 last year, you have to think Mesa is on the brink of collapse.  No one is sure how he helps the Tigers, unless Omar Vizquel is traded to the White Sox.
