Jose Cruz Jr. – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Thu, 10 Dec 2020 20:39:46 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Quick Hits: Tigers, Pirates, Royals https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/quick-hits-tigers-pirates-royals.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/12/quick-hits-tigers-pirates-royals.html#comments Thu, 10 Dec 2020 20:39:46 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=296591 The Tigers have added former outfielder Jose Cruz Jr. to their major league coaching staff, the team announced. He’ll “focus on hitting instruction,” according to the Tigers. While the Tigers didn’t name an exact role for Cruz, it appears he will be their assistant hitting coach to Scott Coolbaugh, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com observes. Cruz spent 1997-2008 with a handful of different major league teams and clubbed 204 home runs. He has since worked for the MLBPA and as an ESPN analyst. He’s now part of the same organization as his son, infielder Trei Cruz, whom the Tigers drafted in the third round last summer.

  • The Pirates announced a number of additions to their baseball operations staff via a press release. Pittsburgh hired Rafael Freitas as their new Major League Head Athletic Trainer, Terence Brannic as Head Major League Strength & Conditioning Coach, Adam Vish as a Strength & Conditioning Coach, and Seth Steinhauer joins the Major League staff as Physical Therapist after sour seasons as the Pirates’ minor league rehab coordinator. Josh Hopper heads to Pittsburgh from the college ranks as the Coordinator of Pitching Development. Hopper spent the last three seasons as pitching coach at Dallas Baptist University after nine seasons in the same role with the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
  • The Royals don’t have any staff additions to announce, but they are adding a new video board that will cover the Hall of Fame wall in left field, writes Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star (via Twitter). The team has released a series of tweets here, and here, showing the construction project getting underway. The new board will be the tallest HDR video board in baseball with 5.1 million total pixels.

Marlins Notes: Jeter, Cruz, Gordon, Ziegler, Ichiro, Rojas, Riddle https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/marlins-notes-jeter-cruz-gordon-ziegler-ichiro-rojas-riddle.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/marlins-notes-jeter-cruz-gordon-ziegler-ichiro-rojas-riddle.html#comments Sat, 15 Jul 2017 16:18:12 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=97172 Here are a handful of notes on the Marlins, via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.

  • Marlins bidders Jorge Mas and Derek Jeter won’t be joining forces, Jackson writes. Mas, the Miami billionaire, contacted Jeter weeks ago and asked him to join Mas’ ownership group (as Fan Rag’s Jon Heyman also recently noted). Jeter refused, however, because he wants to control both the baseball and business sides of the team despite only contributing a relatively modest $25MM of his own money (as Heyman also previously noted). Jeter’s desire to control all parts of the team’s operations were also an issue when Jeter was previously part of a bidding group that included Jeb Bush.
  • An earlier report indicated union executive (and former big-league outfielder) Jose Cruz Jr. would be part of the Mas group. Jackson indicates that no specific role has been outlined for Cruz, but that Mas and his group do favor him.
  • The Marlins aren’t actively looking to trade Dee Gordon, but might deal him for the right return, Jackson suggests. A recent report from Heyman named the Royals, Angels and Blue Jays as potential bidders for Gordon, but indicated that the $41MM left on Gordon’s current deal might be a sticking point. Gordon is batting .291/.338/.353 in 380 plate appearances this season.
  • Neither righty Brad Ziegler nor outfielder Ichiro Suzuki plan to retire after the season, Jackson writes. Ziegler considered retiring before signing with Miami last winter, Jackson indicates. It’s not surprising that those retirement plans are no more, however, since he’s signed for $9MM next season. The 37-year-old is, however, in the midst of a terrible year, with a 6.52 ERA, 5.3 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9 over 29 innings. Ichiro would play in 2018 at the age of 44 and has a .220/.267/.294 line this year; Jackson suggests that Ichiro is unlikely to return to the Marlins next season, despite his plans to play.
  • Infielder Miguel Rojas is set to return soon from a thumb injury, and manager Don Mattingly says he’s open to having Rojas compete with rookie JT Riddle for the starting shortstop job. Mattingly indicates, though, that he liked using Rojas in a utility role instead. Rojas has played all four infield positions with the Marlins this season.

Odds & Ends: Dodgers, Torre, Wang, Wright https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/odds-ends-dodgers-torre-wang-wright.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/odds-ends-dodgers-torre-wang-wright.html#respond Fri, 23 Oct 2009 17:44:56 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/10/odds-ends-dodgers-torre-wang-wright.html A night without baseball just doesn't feel right…

  • ESPN's Buster Olney wonders if the "legal wrangling" caused by the McCourts' divorce could affect the Dodgers attempt to land a No. 1 starter this offseason. Within the same piece, Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus notes that the prospects traded in deals for Casey Blake and George Sherrill have thinned out LA's system, meaning they might not have the ammo to pull off a major trade.
  • Meanwhile, Phil Wood of MASNsports.com writes that a source told him they believe Joe Torre will manage the Dodgers for years to come. "When push comes to shove, he won't want to leave," said the source.
  • Tyler Kepner of The NY Times mentions that Chien-Ming Wang isn't sure if the Yankees will tender him a contract this offseason. “Nothing’s sure,” Wang said. Wang has thrown just 137 IP over the last two seasons due to foot and shoulder injuries.
  • Dave Cameron at FanGraphs looks at the David WrightJose Cruz Jr. non-trade, and says that the Blue Jays messed up by not making the deal, but not because Wright developed into an All-Star. He says J.P. Ricciardi did wrong by not getting any return for Cruz Jr. before he left as a free agent in the offseason.

Odds & Ends: McCourt, Manny, Duncan, Blue Jays https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/odds-ends-mccourts-duncan-blue-jays.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/odds-ends-mccourts-duncan-blue-jays.html#respond Thu, 22 Oct 2009 20:32:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/10/odds-ends-mccourts-duncan-blue-jays.html A few links to check out between ALCS pitches…

  • Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt has fired his wife, Jamie, as CEO of the team. The McCourts are famously going through what will likely be a messy divorce, and Jamie's lawyers maintain that "she owns 50 percent of the team."
  • Diamond Leung tweets that the Dodgers and GM Ned Colletti are planning on having Manny Ramirez around next year. Manny has a $20MM player option that he has until shortly after the World Series to exercise.
  • Now that they've brought in hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, Mark Potash of The Chicago Sun Times wants to see the Cubs go after pitching coach Dave Duncan. Duncan has said he's going to wait and see what Tony LaRussa does before deciding on his coaching future.
  • ESPN's Keith Law, former special assistant to the GM in Toronto, mentioned a few interesting Blue Jays' non-trades in his chat today. He says that the Mets once offered 19-year-old David Wright for Jose Cruz Jr., but J.P. Ricciardi said "I'm not trading a major league player for some guy in the (Low Class-A) Sally League." Klaw also mentions that the Jays had a chance to trade Cruz Jr. for Rafael Soriano, but wouldn't do it unless the Mariners kicked in Clint Nageotte as well. What could have been, Jays fans.

Padres Sign Jose Cruz Jr. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/12/padres-sign-jos.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2006/12/padres-sign-jos.html#respond Mon, 04 Dec 2006 23:31:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2006/12/padres-sign-jos.html It’s official; the Padres have agreed to a one-year, $650K contract with outfielder Jose Cruz Jr.  It’s not a bad idea – for less than twice the league minimum the Padres get a lefty masher to pair with Terrmel Sledge in left field.  Plus, Cruz can play all three outfield positions.

It could make for a decent platoon.  Sledge hit .265/.345/.459 against righties over the past three seasons while Cruz hit .291/.392/.493 against southpaws.  It’s a way to get league average production for cheap.
