Jaycob Brugman – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Tue, 21 Jan 2020 21:35:40 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 White Sox Sign Adalberto Mejia, Drew Anderson, Matt Skole https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/white-sox-sign-adalberto-mejia.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/white-sox-sign-adalberto-mejia.html#comments Tue, 21 Jan 2020 21:35:40 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=187831 The White Sox announced a series of minor league signings Tuesday, including the yet-unreported additions of left-hander Adalberto Mejia, right-hander Drew Anderson, corner infielder Matt Skole and outfielder Jaycob Brugman. They’ll all be in Major League camp this spring.

Mejia, formerly of the Twins, Angels and Cardinals, was a top-100 prospect at his best but has yet to put things together at the game’s top level. Now 26 years old, Mejia was unscored upon in 9 1/3 minor league innings across multiple organizations this year but was hit hard in the Majors, logging a 6.61 ERA (4.97 FIP, 5.98 xFIP) with an ugly 30-to-21 K/BB ratio in 31 1/3 innings.

Mejia did make 21 respectable starts for the Twins in 2017 (4.50 ERA, 7.8 K/9, 4.0 BB/9) at just 24 years of age, creating some optimism that he could settle in as the fourth starter he’d been projected as in the upper minors. But blister issues and a left wrist injury shortened Mejia’s 2018 season, and he wasn’t able to regain his footing in 2019. The White Sox don’t look to have room for him in the rotation, but he could provide depth in Triple-A or look to carve out a bullpen spot.

Anderson, 25, enjoyed solid numbers in Double-A and Triple-A in 2017-18 but hasn’t found success in the big leagues yet. He’s thrown 21 innings for the Phillies but been hammered for 18 earned runs on 29 hits and nine walks with 19 strikeouts. He’s only yielded one home run in that time, but he’s been plagued by a sky-high .389 BABIP in the Majors. Anderson notched a combined 3.72 ERA in 111 1/3 innings in Triple-A from 2017-18 but slumped to a 5.77 mark in 48 1/3 frames there in 2019.

The 30-year-old Skole appeared in 27 games for the White Sox in 2019, hitting .208/.275/.236 in 80 plate appearances. He posted a .248/.384/.497 batting line with 21 long balls in Triple-A Charlotte this past season — his second in the White Sox organization. Skole has a generally productive track record throughout the minors thanks largely to his persistent knack for drawing walks.

Brugman, 28, hasn’t appeared in the big leagues since his 2017 debut with the A’s, when he batted .266/.346/.343 in 162 plate appearances. He’s been with the Orioles and Mariners since that time, including a terrific .283/.363/.601 slash in 331 plate appearances with Seattle’s Triple-A club in 2019. Brugman, though, has never shown that type of power in the past, so those numbers should be taken with a grain of salt considering the juiced ball in Triple-A this past season; the outfielder’s 24 homers in 2019 matched his combined total from 2016-18. Brugman has long had solid walk rates, though, and he’s a solid defender who can play all three outfield spots even though he’s consistently posted below-average power numbers excluding the 2019 surge.

Mariners Sign Kelby Tomlinson, Jaycob Brugman https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/06/mariners-sign-kelby-tomlinson-jaycob-brugman.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/06/mariners-sign-kelby-tomlinson-jaycob-brugman.html#comments Sat, 01 Jun 2019 05:38:39 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=160639 The Mariners have signed infielder Kelby Tomlinson and outfielder Jaycob Brugman to minor league contracts, per Roster Roundup.

The 28-year-old Tomlinson is best known for a long run with San Francisco, which selected him in the 12th round of the 2011 draft. Tomlinson stayed with the organization through last season, the fourth straight year in which he logged major league action. The righty-hitting Tomlinson was an offensive bright spot as a part-time player with the Giants from 2015-16, but his numbers cratered thereafter. Tomlinson ended his Giants tenure with a .265/.331/.332 line (84 wRC+), three home runs and 19 steals over 687 plate appearances.

San Francisco outrighted Tomlinson after last season, leading to a minor league opportunity with the division-rival Diamondbacks. However, Tomlinson opened 2019 by hitting an unappealing .218/.320/.276 with no HRs across 100 PA with Arizona’s Triple-A club. As a result, the D-backs released him May 12.

Brugman, 27, has spent most of the season on the minor league injured list with the Orioles, who released him last week after he came off the IL. He had been with the O’s since they acquired him from the Athletics for right-hander Jake Bray in November 2017 . Brugman’s only major league experience came in ’17 as a member of the A’s, with whom the left-hander hit a respectable .266/.346/.343 (90 wRC+) and totaled three home runs in 162 attempts. Otherwise, Brugman has mostly played at Triple-A over the past few seasons. He carries a .276/.342/.403 slash with 14 homers in 856 PA at the minors’ top level.

  • The Orioles have outrighted Jaycob Brugman to Triple-A after the outfielder cleared waivers, as per a team announcement.  Baltimore designated Brugman for assignment earlier this week to create roster space for the newly re-signed Chris Tillman.  Brugman, acquired in a trade with the A’s back in November, will continue to compete for a big league job with the Orioles, though the O’s have further addressed their need for left-handed bats with the recent signings of Colby Rasmus and Pedro Alvarez.  The 26-year-old Brugman made his MLB debut last season, batting .266/.346/.343 over 162 plate appearances for Oakland.

Orioles Designate Jaycob Brugman, Announce Tillman Signing https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/orioles-designate-jaycob-brugman-announce-tillman-signing.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/02/orioles-designate-jaycob-brugman-announce-tillman-signing.html#comments Wed, 21 Feb 2018 14:27:42 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=115400 The Orioles have designated outfielder Jaycob Brugman for assignment, per a club announcement. His roster spot will go to righty Chris Tillman, whose signing was announced.

Baltimore had picked up the 25-year-old Brugman earlier in the offseason after he was designated by the A’s. He had been expected to compete in camp for a reserve role and perhaps still will if he clears waivers.

Brugman posted a .266/.346/.343 slash over 162 plate appearances last year. He also owns a .289/.353/.410 composite line across 605 total trips to the plate at the Triple-A level. Regarded as a solid corner outfield defender who’s capable of spending some time in center,

The O’s are said to be looking for a lefty-hitting outfielder, but evidently don’t expect Brugman to be their best option. It seems rather clear at this point that the club has every intention of bringing in a veteran from outside the organization.

Athletics Acquire Jake Bray From Orioles https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/athletics-acquire-jake-bray-from-orioles.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/athletics-acquire-jake-bray-from-orioles.html#comments Tue, 19 Dec 2017 21:11:38 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=110709 The Athletics have acquired righty Jake Bray from the Orioles, per a club announcement. He represents the player to be named later in the deal that sent outfielder Jaycob Brugman to Baltimore earlier in the offseason.

Bray, 25, has not yet played above the Class A level. In 2017, he pitched to a 3.88 ERA in 51 Sally League frames. That said, he has shown some interesting peripherals at time, never more so than in his just-completed season, when he racked up 82 strikeouts against just 14 walks.

Orioles Acquire Jaycob Brugman https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/orioles-acquire-jaycob-brugman.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/orioles-acquire-jaycob-brugman.html#comments Wed, 22 Nov 2017 19:11:25 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=107737 The Orioles have acquired outfielder Jaycob Brugman from the Athletics, per a club announcement. A player to be named or cash will go to Oakland in return.

Brugman, 25, was just designated for assignment by the A’s. He reached the majors for the first time last year, posting a .266/.346/.343 slash over 162 plate appearances. A generally solid on-base threat in the minors, the left-handed hitter has shown a bit of pop at times but has not always sustained it in the upper minors. Metrics did not view his work in center field favorably in 2017, though that was a short sample and scouting reports have generally suggested he’s a solid overall defender.

It’s certainly possible that the Orioles could allow Brugman to compete for a reserve/platoon outfield role in camp. He’ll play at or near the league minimum and might help the team save funds to dedicate to the rotation, which is clearly a more pressing area of need. The O’s have a variety of right-handed bats to work with already. Adam Jones and Trey Mancini are certainties to see regular time. Mark Trumbo will likely mostly function as a DH but could factor in the mix, while top prospect Austin Hays will receive consideration despite a tepid late-season debut. Reserve options on hand include switch-hitting Anthony Santander and right-handed-hitting Joey Rickard.

Athletics Designate Sam Moll, Jaycob Brugman https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/athletics-designate-sam-moll-jaycob-brugman.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/athletics-designate-sam-moll-jaycob-brugman.html#comments Tue, 21 Nov 2017 01:36:47 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=107608 The Athletics have designated lefty Sam Moll and outfielder Jaycob Brugman for assignment, as MLB.com’s Jane Lee tweets. Oakland also added right-handers Heath Fillmyer and Lou Trivino to its 40-man roster, she adds.

Moll got a look in the majors after a mid-season claim from the Rockies organization. While he recorded seven strikeouts in his six innings, the 25-year-old was also touched for eight earned runs on 13 hits. In his 54 1/3 Triple-A innings on the year, Moll worked to a 3.64 ERA with 7.8 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9.

Brugman is also 25 and is also fresh off of his first taste of the big leagues. He got on base at a healthy .346 clip over 162 plate appearances, but managed only a .343 slugging percentage. In 172 trips to the plate at Triple-A, he similarly slashed .275/.355/.340.

AL West Notes: Fister, Segura, Brugman, Doolittle https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/06/al-west-notes-fister-segura-brugman-doolittle.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/06/al-west-notes-fister-segura-brugman-doolittle.html#comments Thu, 08 Jun 2017 22:55:22 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=94388 Doug Fister’s first start with the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate went quite well, as the veteran right-hander tossed five innings of one-run ball and allowed just four hits and no walks to go along with seven strikeouts. Of the 11 balls put into play against him, seven were hit on the ground (63.6 percent rate). Fister reportedly has a June 21 opt-out in his contract with the Angels, so the Halos can get another couple of looks at him before making a decision on whether to promote him to the Majors, though his first outing was certainly encouraging.

More from the AL West…

  • Mariners ownership gave GM Jerry Dipoto a “unanimous go for it” when he approached them about pursuing an extension with shortstop Jean Segura, Dipoto said at yesterday’s press conference announcing the deal (via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). “I can speak for [CEO John Stanton] and [president Kevin Mather] as well. When I brought it to them the first time, I know it was shared with the ownership group to give them the ok to roll ahead with negotiations, everybody was absolutely in back of the negotiations or the proposal each step of the way. They were all for it.” Dipoto acknowledged that a full no-trade clause isn’t something he considers “typical” in extension talks, but Segura’s agent, CAA’s Nez Balelo, explained that due to the three previous trades in his Segura’s still-young career, it was an important element to secure.
  • The Athletics are promoting outfield prospect Jaycob Brugman to make his Major League debut this weekend, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. It’s not yet clear what the corresponding roster move will be, though Brugman was added to the 40-man roster, so Oakland needn’t necessarily designate someone for assignment in order to bring him up. Ranked as the organization’s No. 21 prospect by MLB.com and No. 24 by Baseball America, Brugman is off to a fine start in Triple-A Nashville, slashing .288/.373/.364 through 150 plate appearances. He’s capable of playing all three outfield positions and possesses roughly average pop and speed, per the previously linked scouting reports. The 25-year-old Brugman is pegged as more of a fourth outfielder than a starter by both reports but will inject some youth into what is currently a fairly old mix of outfielders.
  • Slusser also notes that Sean Doolittle is expected to be activated from the disabled list as the 26th man for one of the two games of Saturday’s doubleheader. The A’s will need to drop back down to 25 players, so Brugman could be optioned out quickly after his first look in the Majors. However, Slusser also notes that relievers Frankie Montas and Josh Smith are both candidate to be sent down as well. Speculatively speaking, if both are optioned, Oakland could once again have a four-man bench, though it’d be shifting back to a 12-man pitching staff in that case.
