Jee-ho Yoo of South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency tweets that MacKinnon is guaranteed $1MM on the deal — a $900K salary and $100K signing bonus.

MacKinnon, who turns 29 today, was a 32nd-round pick by the Angels in 2017 and made a brief big league debut in 2022, appearing in 22 games and taking 57 turns at the plate between Anaheim and Oakland. He posted a tepid .140/.228/.140 slash in that tiny sample, but MacKinnon has posted a hearty .294/.412/.464 slash in his minor league career — including a gaudy .318/.416/.585 output in his 2022 Triple-A run between the Angels and A’s organizations.

That minor league production led to interest from Japan last offseason, and MacKinnon spent the ’23 campaign playing for Nippon Professional Baseball’s Seibu Lions. He batted .259/.327/.401 and swatted 15 homers in 514 plate appearances there, and he’ll now jump to the KBO and continue to earn at a rate that vastly outpaces anything he’d earned as a late-round draft flier and career minor leaguer.

David MacKinnon Agrees To Terms With NPB’s Seibu Lions https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/david-mackinnon-agrees-to-terms-with-npbs-seibu-lions.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/12/david-mackinnon-agrees-to-terms-with-npbs-seibu-lions.html#comments Tue, 20 Dec 2022 00:48:18 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=758982 Infielder David MacKinnon is signing with the Seibu Lions of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball for the 2023 campaign, reports Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic (Twitter link). The 28-year-old had been non-tendered by the A’s at the end of this past season.

MacKinnon entered the professional ranks with little fanfare, a 32nd-round draftee of the Angels in 2017. A University of Hartford product, he eventually played his way to the highest level with a .294/.412/.464 showing in parts of five minor league seasons. That included a massive .324/.429/.631 mark with 14 home runs through 273 plate appearances in his first crack with Triple-A Salt Lake this year. The Angels selected his contract in mid-June, and he broke into MLB with 16 games for the Halos.

On the day of the trade deadline, Anaheim lost MacKinnon to the A’s via waiver claim. He spent the rest of the season in a depth role, appearing six times in MLB and in 16 Triple-A games in the Oakland organization. MacKinnon hit .297/.370/.422 with their top affiliate in Las Vegas but didn’t make much of an impact in his brief big league look at either stop. Between the Angels and Athletics, he hit .140/.228/.140 in 57 trips to the plate.

While the Massachusetts native didn’t get much of a chance to establish himself in the majors, his very impressive Triple-A work caught the attention of evaluators in Japan. He’ll head to the Lions for at least one season, bringing a high-OBP bat to the mix. MacKinnon walked in an excellent 14.2% of his Triple-A plate appearances while striking out just 18.2% of the time. He’s a bat-first player who has spent the majority of his professional career at first base, although he also started 10 Triple-A games at the hot corner this year.

American League Non-Tenders: 11/18/22 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/american-league-non-tenders-11-18-22.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/11/american-league-non-tenders-11-18-22.html#comments Sat, 19 Nov 2022 01:30:35 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=755285 The deadline to tender contract to arbitration-eligible players is tonight at 7:00pm Central. Here’s a rundown of the players on American League teams that have been non-tendered today. This post will be updated as more decisions are revealed.

MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected salaries for all arb-eligible players last month. Onto the transactions…

Latest Transactions

  • The Mariners announced that they have non-tendered three players: catchers Brian O’Keefe and Luis Torrens, as well as righty Luke Weaver. Weaver was just claimed off waivers from the Royals a few weeks ago but will now become a free agent.
  • The White Sox announced three non-tenders: outfielders Adam Engel and Mark Payton, as well as infielder Danny Mendick. Engel is generally considered a strong defensive outfielder but he struggled at the plate in 2022. Mendick played all over the diamond while hitting .289/.343/.443 for a wRC+ of 125.
  • The Guardians announced they have non-tendered lefty Anthony Gose and catcher Luke Maile. Gose was designated for assignment earlier in the week. Maile got into 76 games hit at a below-average level with roughly average defensive marks.
  • The Angels announced four non-tenders: lefties Jhonathan Diaz and Rob Zastryzny, as well as righties Touki Toussaint and Nash Walters. The latter three names were designated for assignment a few days ago.
  • The Rays have non-tendered Ryan Yarbrough, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Tampa designated him for assignment earlier in the week.
  • The Blue Jays announced that they have non-tendered outfielders Raimel Tapia and Bradley Zimmer, as well as infielder Vinny Capra. The two former names were designated for assignment a few days ago.

Earlier Moves

  • The Athletics announced that they did not tender contracts to three players: right-hander Deolis Guerra, left-hander Jared Koenig and infielder David MacKinnon. Guerra is the most seasoned of the trio, having made his MLB debut back in 2015 and made 136 appearances. Unfortunately, he required Tommy John surgery in April, missing the entire 2022 campaign and possibly some of 2023 as well.
  • The Red Sox are non-tendering outfielder/first-baseman Franchy Cordero, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Cordero appeared in 84 games for the Red Sox this past season, but hit just .219/.300/.397 with eight home runs while grading out very poorly on defense.  The Sox have also non-tendered infielder Yu Chang, per Alex Speier of the Boston Globe. The versatile infielder began the year with the Guardians but subsequently went to the Pirates in a trade, then went to the Rays and Red Sox on waiver claims. Across those four teams, he hit .208/.289/.315 for a wRC+ of 78.
  • The Astros will part ways with reliever Josh James, as Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports they’re expected to non-tender him tonight. He spent the entire 2022 campaign in the minors, and underwent flexor tendon surgery in October and is without a timetable to return.
  • The Rangers announced that right-hander Nick Snyder has not been tendered a contract. He only has 4 2/3 innings of MLB experience over the past couple of seasons. He spent most of 2022 in Triple-A, posting a 4.97 ERA over 38 innings, though with a 30.9% strikeout rate.
  • The Royals opted to non-tender lefty Jake Brentz and right-hander Nate Webb, the team announced. That’s no surprise, as both players were designated for assignment earlier this week. They lost their 40-man roster spots as a result, but the non-tender means Kansas City won’t need to run them through waivers before sending them directly to free agency. Anne Rogers of MLB.com tweets that Kansas City is tendering contracts to the rest of their arbitration class, including Brad Keller and Amir Garrett — each of whom seemed to have a small chance of being cut loose after tough seasons.

A’s Claim David MacKinnon, Designate Wandisson Charles https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/athletics-claim-david-mackinnon-angels-dfa-wandisson-charles.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/athletics-claim-david-mackinnon-angels-dfa-wandisson-charles.html#comments Fri, 05 Aug 2022 19:12:35 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=745484 The Athletics announced Friday that they’ve claimed first baseman David MacKinnon off waivers from the Angels. Right-hander Wandisson Charles was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

MacKinnon, 27, is a former 32nd-round draft pick who made his big league debut this season after a huge showing in Triple-A Salt Lake. He went just 7-for-37 at the MLB level without an extra-base hit at the Major League level, but the righty-swinging MacKinnon mashed at a .324/.429/.631 clip in 273 plate appearances with Salt Lake (156 wRC+). In just 273 plate appearances in Triple-A, MacKinnon belted 14 homers and connected on 19 doubles and four triples — all while walking nearly as often as he struck out (15.4% to 18.7%).

Because MacKinnon was only selected to the Major League roster for the first time this season, he’s in the first of three minor league option years. And while he’s never quite produced at this level in the minors in the past, MacKinnon still slashed .285/.380/.474 (139 wRC+) with 13 dingers and 30 doubles through 426 plate appearances in a pitcher-friendly Double-A setting a year ago.

Following the offseason trade of Matt Olson, the A’s have given most of the playing time at first base to lefty-swinging Seth Brown and the since-traded, right-handed-hitting Christian Bethancourt. Brown has batted .249/.310/.494 when facing right-handed pitching but just .170/.200/.283 in 55 plate appearances against lefties. MacKinnon, hitting .294/.390/.588 against lefties this season (big leagues and Triple-A combined), will give Brown a natural platoon partner at first.

Charles, 25, is a hard-throwing righty who has battled command issues throughout his time in the minors and struggled considerably this season in his second stint at the Double-A level. He’s yielded 36 earned runs in just 32 innings, thanks to a through-the-roof 19.4% walk rate and a career-worst 1.13 HR/9 mark. Charles can run his fastball into the upper 90s and has had multiple seasons where he’s fanned more than 30% of his opponents, but this year’s 19.4% walk rate is right in line with the career 19.3% mark he’s posted across parts of six minor league seasons. The A’s can put Charles on waivers at any point in the next week.

Minor MLB Transactions: Deadline Day https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/minor-mlb-transactions-deadline-day.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/08/minor-mlb-transactions-deadline-day.html#comments Wed, 03 Aug 2022 01:18:24 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=745224 As is the case at every trade deadline, there’s a flurry of activity on deadline day. The most high-profile of the moves are the trades themselves, but the aftermath of that activity often results in a shuffle of minor moves of their own. Angels Select David MacKinnon https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/06/angels-to-select-david-mackinnon.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2022/06/angels-to-select-david-mackinnon.html#comments Sun, 19 Jun 2022 01:15:44 +0000 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/?p=740618 8:15pm: The Angels announced the selection of MacKinnon and corresponding moves. A spot on the active roster was created by right-hander Austin Warren being placed on the 15-day IL with a right triceps strain. To create room on the 40-man roster, Anthony Rendon was transferred to the 60-day injured list. It was reported yesterday that Rendon is set to having season-ending surgery on his wrist, making this transaction an inevitable formality.

7:25pm: Angels manager Phil Nevin tells Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com that the club will select the contract of first baseman David MacKinnon for the second game of today’s doubleheader. He is not currently on the 40-man roster, meaning a corresponding move will be required.

MacKinnon, 27, was a 32nd round draft pick of the Angels in 2017. He’s never been a highly-touted prospect, having never appeared on the Angels’ prospect lists at either Baseball America or FanGraphs. That’s perhaps due to his age, as he was already 22 by the time he was drafted and 23 by the time he first played a professional game. He also doesn’t offer much on the defensive side of things, as he’s only capable of playing first base. (He did play one game at second base in Double-A last year.)

Nevertheless, he’s earned his way up to the majors due to his skills with the bat. In 334 games over his minor league career, he has a batting line of .294/.413/.462. This year, in Triple-A Salt Lake, he’s walking at an incredible 14.2% rate while striking out just 18.8% of the time. He’s also hit 13 home runs and is slashing .327/.423/.633 for a wRC+ of 156. Based on that tremendous output, the Angels will give him the call to make his MLB debut and see if he can translate any of that to the show.

The Angels have Jared Walsh at first base and Shohei Ohtani as the designated hitter most nights, but both of them are left-handed hitters. Since MacKinnon hits from the right side, he could potentially give either of them a day off when facing a difficult lefty pitcher, in addition to likely taking some pinch-hitting opportunities.
