The Nationals signed the 27-year-old right-hander to a minor league deal in February and he underwent Tommy John surgery last week.

Meredith posted a 5.40 ERA with 4.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9 in 21 relief apppearances for Baltimore last year. He was a key member of the Padres' bullpen from 2006-09, when he posted a 3.26 ERA with 6.3 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 237 1/3 total innings.

Meredith, a sixth round selection of Boston's in the 2004 draft, reached the majors the following season when he made a three-appearance cameo with the Red Sox. He has appeared in the big leagues every season since his 2005 debut, averaging 57 outings per year and a 3.43 ERA in that time.

He had a 1.07 ERA in 45 appearances for the Padres five years ago and was a key member of the San Diego bullpen from 2006-09, before the Padres sent him to Baltimore for Oscar Salazar. Moore, Meredith, Castillo, Aubrey Elect Free Agency https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/moore-meredith-castillo-aubrey-elect-free-agency.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/10/moore-meredith-castillo-aubrey-elect-free-agency.html#comments Tue, 05 Oct 2010 09:58:06 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/10/moore-meredith-castillo-aubrey-elect-free-agency.html Orioles players Scott Moore, Cla Meredith, Alberto Castillo, and Michael Aubrey elected free agency, tweets MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli.  They appear to be minor league free agents, having finished the season at Triple A and off the 40-man roster.

Moore, 27 in November, hit .209/.274/.337 in 96 plate appearances for the Orioles this year, playing mostly second base.  He joined the Orioles in August of '07 in the Steve Trachsel deal with the Cubs.  Moore was designated for assignment in '09 and '10, clearing waivers both times.  He hit .280/.345/.476 at Triple A this year while playing mainly third base.

Meredith, 27, tallied 15 relief innings for the Orioles this year with a 5.40 ERA, 4.2 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, and four home runs allowed.  The sidearmer racks up groundballs and handles righties well on his best days.  The Orioles acquired him from the Padres for Oscar Salazar in July of last year.  He was designated for assignment and cleared waivers in June.

Castillo, 35, whiffed 11 but allowed five homers and 12 earned runs in his 10.6 inning stint with the O's this year.  He was designated for assignment in June to clear a 40-man spot for Jake Arrieta.  Castillo's work in Triple A: a 4.54 ERA, 9.8 K/9, and 3.4 BB/9 in 39.6 innings.  He was done in by 46 hits allowed.  His previous work in Triple A was more encouraging.

Aubrey, 28, was drafted 11th overall by the Indians in 2003.  It appeared that he might get a shot at first base for the Orioles heading into this season, but they signed Garrett Atkins and ended up designating Aubrey on April 1st.  He spent the season at Triple A, hitting .235/.310/.495 with 22 home runs in 419 plate appearances.

Cla Meredith Clears Waivers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/orioles-designate-cla-meredith-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/orioles-designate-cla-meredith-for-assignment.html#comments Wed, 30 Jun 2010 13:26:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/orioles-designate-cla-meredith-for-assignment.html JUNE 30: Meredith cleared waivers and accepted an assignment to Triple A Norfolk, tweets Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

JUNE 22: The Orioles designated Cla Meredith for assignment, according to the team. The 27-year-old sidearmer has a 5.40 ERA in 15 innings with the O's this year, posting 4.2 K/9 and 2.4 BB/9. Meredith, who last pitched in the majors on May 27th, was acquired for Oscar Salazar last year. Since his late-May demotion to Triple A, Meredith has a 13.50 in five appearances.

The Orioles demoted Chris Tillman to make room for recent acquisition Jake Fox on the 25-man roster, but they needed 40-man roster space so Meredith loses his spot.

  • Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker suggests Major League Baseball should consider re-working its draft system.  Here's the gist of his idea:  "What I’d propose is a regulated amateur free agent system, in which the draft is discarded entirely. Every amateur player who meets the entry criteria (age, education, whatever) would be allowed to negotiate and sign with any team, regardless of national origin."  Check it out.
  • The Baltimore Sun's Peter Schmuck gives his take on the Oscar Salazar-for-Cla Meredith swap:  "Oscar was the ultimate good soldier, waiting for his turn without complaint and performing very well as a spot player recently."
  • As Joe Posnanski points out, the Royals have won just 19 of their last 62 games. Just how bad is that mark? The Dodgers have never lost as many games in a 62-game stretch.
  • Baseball America's Ben Badler reports that the Indians signed Jairo Kelly, a switch-hitting Dominican shortstop.

O’s, Padres Swap Salazar and Meredith https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/orioles-deal-salazar-to-padres.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/orioles-deal-salazar-to-padres.html#respond Sun, 19 Jul 2009 18:51:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/07/orioles-deal-salazar-to-padres.html 6:51pm: As several readers have pointed out, this deal may be a precursor to a Danys Baez or George Sherrill trade.

Both have been floated as possible trade chips recently.

6:29pm:  Kubatko reports the Orioles have acquired submariner Cla Meredith in return.  He was 4-2 with a 4.17 ERA and a 20/13 K/BB ratio in 36 2/3 innings for the Padres.

"He gets a lot of ground balls and can pitch every other day," O's president Andy MacPhail said Sunday evening. "The ground ball ratio becomes more important later in the summer in our ballpark."

5:22pm: According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, the Orioles have traded infielder Oscar Salazar to the Padres.  The 31-year-old was 13-for-31 with two home runs and six RBI for the O's since his call-up in early June.

We're waiting to hear who (or what) Baltimore got in return.  It's apparently not a "player to be named later," so we should have something shortly.  Stay tuned.

Towers Speaks About Possible Moves https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/towers-speaks-about-possible-moves.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/towers-speaks-about-possible-moves.html#respond Thu, 16 Jul 2009 18:10:23 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/07/towers-speaks-about-possible-moves.html Padres GM Kevin Towers spoke with Darren Smith of 1090 XX Sports Radio earlier today, touching on a variety of Padre related topics. You can download and listen to the interview by clicking here, but here's a roundup of the rumors…

  • Towers said he expects to get calls from contending teams about his "experienced players," mentioning David Eckstein, Brian Giles, Henry Blanco, Kevin Correia, Chad Gaudin, Cla Meredith and Mike Adams by name.
  • He also said it's doubtful that the team would take on salary in a deadline deal, but they might be able to during the offseason.
  • Depending on how he comes back from injury, there may be interest in Giles. Towers said it's doubtful anything happens before the deadline, but a waiver trade could be made in August. Giles, of course, has a full no-trade clause.
  • When asked why he wouldn't trade Adrian Gonzalez or Heath Bell before the deadline to bring back as much talent as possible, Towers said "it's not to say we won't." He then mentions that they first need to determine what young players they're committed to keeping here and what they need to bring in from outside the organization, but if someone approaches them about one of those guys "they need to listen."

Trade Candidates: Relievers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/trade-candidates-relievers.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/trade-candidates-relievers.html#respond Mon, 13 Jul 2009 16:51:56 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/07/trade-candidates-relievers.html Just about every team could improve its bullpen and some clubs, like the Marlins and Rockies, are working aggressively to add relievers. Here are some of the names to consider, ordered from highest 2009 salary to lowest.

  • Kerry Wood – He's been a disappointment in Cleveland, and the Indians owe him about $15MM before the end of next year, and possibly more in 2011.
  • Rafael Soriano – Could the Braves get creative and deal Soriano ($6.1MM) or Mike Gonzalez ( $3.5MM), who will also become a free agent this winter.
  • Danys Baez – At $5.5MM, he's an expensive option, but he could help a contender.
  • LaTroy Hawkins – He's been effective in 38 appearances for the Astros, who are still in contention and may hold onto Hawkins ($3.5MM) and fellow reliever Jose Valverde ($8MM).
  • Rafael Betancourt – He's still nowhere near as effective as he was in 2007, but Betancourt's pitched well enough this year; he'll make $3.35MM this season.
  • Russ Springer – He's been hittable, but he can still strike major leaguers out. He makes $3.3MM this year.
  • George Sherrill – Affordable and effective, Sherrill ($2.75MM) is under team control through 2011.
  • Chad Qualls – The D'Backs already traded Tony Pena, so they may be reluctant to part with Qualls, who makes $2.5MM this season.
  • John Grabow – Makes $2.3MM this year, before hitting free agency this winter. He's pitching well, but his control's been off this season.
  • Matt Capps – Like Grabow, he makes $2.3MM this year, but Capps will likely hit free agency after 2012.
  • Juan Cruz – Still tough to hit, but not as effective as last year, Cruz makes $2.25MM this year and more in 2010.
  • Joe Beimel – The 32-year-old lefty makes $2MM this year. He's pitched well, but not quite as well as his 3.57 ERA suggests.
  • Takashi Saito – A relative bargain at $1.5MM plus incentives, especially when you consider the affordable team option for next year.
  • Heath Bell – At an affordable $1.3MM, the All-Star closer would be appealing to many clubs, especially since he's under team control through 2011.
  • Cla Meredith – By far the cheapest option on this list at just $431k, he's had three respectable seasons in a row since his breakout 2006 campaign.

The Twins, Angels, Rangers, Phillies, Rockies and Dodgers are among the teams that could make deals to improve their respective ‘pens.

Rockies Rumors: ‘Pen, Atkins, Torrealba https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/rockies-rumors-pen-atkins-torrealba.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/07/rockies-rumors-pen-atkins-torrealba.html#respond Wed, 01 Jul 2009 16:06:38 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/07/rockies-rumors-pen-atkins-torrealba.html Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies' search for a reliever and details on a couple trade chips:

  • The Rockies had interest in Joel Hanrahan before he was dealt to the Pirates.
  • They would love to reacquire LaTroy Hawkins, but he's not available now.
  • The D'Backs would part with Chad Qualls.
  • The Padres are expected to move Cla Meredith
  • Garrett Atkins could be moved and the Red Sox seem to be a logical fit, but a history of failed deals between the two sides could slow talks. The Red Sox have scouted Atkins, but their interest level isn't known.
  • Yorvit Torrealba's future remains uncertain and he says he'd like to remain in Colorado, though he realizes he might be dealt.

Rosenthal On Tejada, Rockies, Mets https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/06/rosenthal-on-tejada-rockies-mets.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/06/rosenthal-on-tejada-rockies-mets.html#respond Tue, 30 Jun 2009 09:46:06 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/06/rosenthal-on-tejada-rockies-mets.html Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports argues that the Cubs don't need to make a trade, they just need their hitters to start producing. Here are his most recent rumors:

  • Ed Wade says Miguel Tejada's impending free agency is part of the reason the Astros aren't asking him to move from shortstop to third base. Tejada would probably move, but Wade would rather not ask him to.
  • The Rockies are looking hard for relief help. They were interested in Joel Hanrahan earlier in the season, but he's much less appealing now.
  • LaTroy Hawkins, Chad Qualls and Takashi Saito are all more appealing than Hanrahan, but Rosenthal says they're "longshots."
  • The Rockies aren't that interested in Cla Meredith and Danys Baez
  • One GM said the Royals are under pressure to win as many games as possible this year.
  • The D'Backs believe Doug Davis has more value as a trade chip because he projects as a Type B free agent. Check out the latest Elias rankings here.
  • One official believes the Mets are better off with Daniel Murphy than Nick Johnson
  • When the Cardinals inquired on Matt Holliday they heard the A's aren't looking to move him and would require a strong offer to part with him.
