Shreve, a former Atlanta draftee who debuted with 15 appearances for the club in 2014, made one MLB appearance as a member of the Rockies last season. He tossed a scoreless inning. That extended the veteran southpaw’s streak to 11 consecutive years logging some major league action. Shreve spent most of the ’23 season in the big leagues. He combined for 50 appearances between the Tigers and Reds, working to a 4.63 ERA across 44 2/3 frames.

While his big league appearance came with Colorado, Shreve played for a trio of Triple-A affiliates last year. He spent time in the Rangers, Yankees and Rox systems. Shreve turned in a cumulative 2.62 earned run average across 34 1/3 innings at the top minor league level. He fanned a strong 26.7% of opponents against a slightly higher than average 9.2% walk percentage. He got swinging strikes at a near-14% clip.

The results were good, but Shreve doesn’t have the velocity that teams prefer to stockpile in the bullpen. His fastball averaged 90 MPH in Triple-A last season. He averaged 89.4 MPH during his only major league appearance. He leans frequently on his slider and splitter to compensate for the fringe velocity. Shreve has neutral platoon splits over his career, so he’s not a great fit for lefty specialist work.

That’s not an issue for an Atlanta team that’ll have Aaron Bummer and Dylan Lee in the late innings. Angel Perdomo is out of options and will need to stick on the MLB roster or be made available to other teams. Depending on whether they carry Perdomo and keep Rule 5 pick Anderson Pilar, Atlanta could have two or three middle relief spots up for grabs in camp.

Shreve, 34, only pitched one inning with the Rockies. He retired all three hitters he faced on a trio of grounders. It was just one inning, but that frame now gives Shreve a stretch of 11 consecutive seasons pitching in the big leagues in some capacity. Though he hasn’t gotten much of a look in the majors this year, Shreve has been pitching well in Triple-A. He’s spent time in the Yankees’ and Rangers’ systems as well, totaling 34 1/3 innings with a 2.62 earned run average, 26.7% strikeout rate, 9.2% walk rate and 41.5% ground-ball rate.

Of course, Shreve has a lengthy big league track record and has been effective more often than not in the majors. He’s tallied 357 MLB frames dating back to 2014 and pitched to a career 3.96 ERA that’s supported by a 3.87 SIERA. Shreve’s career strikeout, walk and ground-ball rates (25.2%, 10.8% and 41.9%, respectively) more or less closely mirror the marks he’s demonstrated in Triple-A this season. He pitched just two innings with the 2019 Cardinals and had a tough 26-inning run with the 2022 Mets (6.49 ERA) but has otherwise been a serviceable middle-innings arm who can capably be relied upon to hold opponents to around four runs for every nine innings pitched.

Shreve is hardly an elite arm, but he’s an experienced lefty who’s pitched in a variety of roles and could help a contending club down the stretch. Any team that signs him would be able to carry him on the postseason roster so long as he’s in the organization prior to Sept. 1. The Mets, Cubs and Mariners are among the teams who currently have only one southpaw in their big league bullpen, although Shreve could certainly latch on with an organization that has more left-handed bullpen depth than that.

Hudson, 29, accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A earlier this season. He signed a one-year, $1.5MM contract with Colorado this past winter, but following a poor performance over his first 17 starts (career-worst 5.84 ERA, 5.61 SIERA, and 12.3% strikeout rate), he was designated for assignment in early July. After he passed through waivers unclaimed, the Rockies sent him outright to the Albuquerque Isotopes.

Through three starts with the Isotopes, Hudson has given up 14 runs (12 earned) in 11 1/3 innings. He has 10 strikeouts, four walks, and a .360 batting average against. His most recent outing against the Las Vegas Aviators was especially brutal; he lasted just 2 2/3 innings, giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out only two. Nevertheless, the Rockies have selected his contract, and he will start tonight’s contest against the Braves at Coors Field (per Patrick Lyons of Just Baseball).

Lyons reported yesterday that Hudson would be starting today in place of Cal Quantrill, who is dealing with some “general forearm soreness.” The team has pushed back his next outing indefinitely (per Lyons). Presuming Quantrill is ready to get back on the mound within a few days, Hudson will, most likely, remain in the rotation until Ryan Feltner returns from the 15-day IL. Feltner landed on the injured list on Thursday with a right shoulder strain, but his recent MRI came back clean, and he could return as soon as his minimum 15 days on the IL are up (per Lyons). That should mean at least two more starts for Hudson after tonight. While he has struggled this season, Hudson is only two years removed from a solid 2022 campaign with the Cardinals, when he pitched to a 4.45 ERA and 5.11 SIERA over 139 2/3 innings. Those aren’t excellent numbers by any means, but all the Rockies need right now is an innings eater.

Shreve, 34, has pitched in the majors every year since 2014, appearing for the Braves, Yankees, Cardinals, Mets, Pirates, Tigers, Reds, and, most recently, the Rockies. He has a 3.96 ERA and 3.87 SIERA across 368 career appearances, mostly as a lower-leverage reliever. Despite his serviceable performance in 2023 (4.63 ERA, 3.77 SIERA in 50 games), the veteran southpaw could only land a minor league contract from the Rangers this winter. Texas released him in May, re-signed him, and then released him again in June. Following that, he signed a minor deal with the Yankees, only to be released again in August. After inking a minor league pact with the Rockies earlier this month, Shreve finally made it back to the majors. He made one brief appearance for Colorado on Wednesday, tossing a scoreless inning against the Mets. He will now be placed on waivers, and if he goes unclaimed, he could opt to return to free agency and seek an opportunity with his fourth organization of the season.

Shreve, 34, has been struggling to get to the majors this year. That’s a bit surprising as he’s generally been solid in his major league career and has been producing decent numbers in the minors this year. In 367 big league appearances dating back to his 2014 debut, he has a 3.97 earned run average. His 10.8% walk rate in that time is on the high side but only slightly. His 25.3% strikeout rate is quite strong and he’s also kept 41.6% of balls in play on the ground.

Coming into this year, he signed a minor league deal with the Rangers but opted out in early May and re-signed with that club on another minors pact. In mid-June, he signed a minors deal with the Yankees, presumably after opting out from his Rangers deal yet again. The Yanks released him a few days ago, perhaps due to another opt-out situation, and he quickly landed with the Rockies on another minor league deal.

Across all those deals, he has a 2.61 ERA in 34 1/3 Triple-A innings this year. He has struck out 26.7% of batters faced while walking 9.2% of them. Despite those decent numbers, the Rangers and Yankees didn’t find room for him in their respective bullpens but the Rockies will.

He’ll take the spot of Curtiss, who has been on and off the Colorado roster this year. He was signed to a minor league deal in the offseason and has now twice has his contract selected but has been designated for assignment a few days later in both instances. He has allowed four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings around those transactions, giving him an unsightly 15.43 ERA on the year.

He had some intriguing results a few years ago but hasn’t got his strikeouts back after his Tommy John surgery. With the Rays, Marlins and Brewers in 2020 and 2021, he tossed a combined 69 1/3 innings with a 2.86 ERA, 24.1% strikeout rate and 5.2% walk rate. He went under the knife in September of 2021 and was then non-tendered by Milwaukee.

The Mets signed him for 2022 and 2023, knowing that he would miss the first year of that stretch. He eventually returned and tossed 19 2/3 innings with the Mets last year but with a 4.58 ERA and 19.8% strikeout rate. He was outrighted off their roster after last year, which led to his deal with the Rockies. He’s tossed 38 Triple-A innings this year with a 4.03 ERA and 18.5% strikeout rate. With the trade deadline now passed, the Rockies will have no choice but to put Curtiss on waivers in the coming days.

Shreve has seen action with seven of those teams at the Major League level, with 174 2/3 of his 356 career big league innings coming in two earlier stints with the Yankees.  Minors deals with the Rangers and Yankees in 2024 didn’t lead to any time in the majors for the 34-year-old, so Shreve will look to crack the Rockies’ roster and officially appear in a game to lock in what would be an 11th MLB campaign.

For such a journeyman’s resume, Shreve has some solid results in the form of a career 3.97 ERA, 25.3% strikeout rate, and 10.8% walk rate.  His most recent two seasons have been quite shaky, however, as Shreve had a 6.49 ERA in 26 1/3 frames with the Mets in 2022 and then a 4.63 ERA in 44 2/3 combined innings with the Tigers and Reds last year.  A combined 3.64 SIERA over the 2022-23 seasons perhaps paints a better view of Shreve’s performance, as an uncharacteristically high homer rate in 2022 particularly hurt his numbers.

Shreve has looked sharp in his time at Triple-A this year, posting a 1.89 ERA in 33 1/3 total innings for the Rangers’ and Yankees’ top affiliates.  His ability to pitch that well in the Pacific Coast League (with Triple-A Sugar Land) provides some hope that he can keep it up in another hitter-friendly environment in Albuquerque.  It might not be long before Shreve is back in the majors, as the Rockies’ woeful bullpen needs all the help it can get, and the club doesn’t have a single left-hander in its relief corps.

Shreve signed with New York in late June. He made 10 appearances for Scranton and pitched fairly well, allowing three earned runs over 11 innings. Shreve surrendered three more unearned runs but struck out 11 while only walking three. New York evidently didn’t believe he’d carry that form over at the major league level. Despite trading Caleb Ferguson and not adding another left-handed reliever at the deadline, they’ll let Shreve depart.

The 34-year-old Shreve hasn’t pitched in the big leagues this season. He has split his time between the Triple-A affiliates with the Rangers and Yankees. He made 50 MLB appearances between Detroit and Cincinnati a year ago, turning in a 4.63 earned run average with slightly better than average strikeout and walk rates over 44 2/3 frames.

New York added a pair of right-handers, Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos, to their relief corps this week. Tim Hill is the only southpaw in their current bullpen while Anthony Misiewicz and Josh Maciejewski are on optional assignment in Triple-A.

Burdi is also headed to Scranton, though he’s evidently healthy after losing more than two months to a right hip injury. The Louisville product has had a very difficult time staying on the mound over his professional career but continues to intrigue evaluators with a fastball that sits around 98 MPH on average. Burdi has fired 9 2/3 innings of two-run ball for New York this season, already setting a personal-high mark with 12 MLB appearances.

Poteet’s 60-day minimum absence is retroactive to his initial IL placement on June 15. He’ll be eligible to return in the second week of August. He has yet to begin a minor league rehab assignment due to a triceps injury. Poteet started four games earlier in the year, turning in a 2.14 ERA across 21 innings.

Shreve, who will celebrate his 34th birthday next month, is a veteran of ten MLB seasons who first made his big league debut with the Braves back in 2014. Shreve was swapped to the Bronx the following offseason alongside David Carpenter in exchange for Manny Banuelos. In parts of four seasons with the Yankees, Shreve pitched to a 3.92 ERA with a 4.99 FIP across 180 relief appearances. He was then packaged with right-hander Giovanny Gallegos and shipped to the Cardinals in exchange for first baseman Luke Voit partway through the 2019 season.

Since leaving the Bronx, Shreve has pitched for the Mets, Pirates, Tigers, and Reds at the big league level in addition to the aforementioned Cardinals. He’s posted a 4.26 ERA that’s exactly league average by measure of ERA+ over 169 innings of work, including a roughly league average performance with Detroit and Cincinnati last year. In 44 2/3 innings of work across 50 appearances, Shreve pitched to a 4.63 ERA and 4.28 FIP with a solid 23.3% strikeout rate against a 7.3% walk rate.

During his time on a minor league deal with Texas, Shreve has looked nothing short of dominant at Triple-A with a 1.61 ERA in 22 1/3 innings across 20 appearances while striking out 29.6% of batters faced. If he could recreate anything close to those numbers at the big league level he’d certainly be a welcome addition to the Yankees bullpen, which has lost Jonathan Loaisiga, Nick Burdi, and Ian Hamilton since the season began while also watching pieces like Caleb Ferguson and Ron Marinaccio struggle. It seems likely that Shreve will head to Triple-A for the time being, although it would hardly be a surprise to see the club call upon the veteran at some point in the near future, particularly after they recently DFA’d lefties Clayton Andrews and Victor Gonzalez earlier this week.

Shreve signed a minor league pact with Texas over the offseason. He was in camp as a non-roster invitee but didn’t make the team after allowing four runs through six innings. Shreve initially accepted an assignment to Round Rock. He made 10 appearances, working 10 1/3 frames of three-run ball, before triggering an opt-out at the start of May. Shreve spent a week exploring the market before circling back to Texas on a new minor league deal.

It’s fairly common for veterans of Shreve’s ilk to opt out of one minor league deal only to re-sign on a similar arrangement. The brief free agent stay at least gave his camp a chance to see if another team was willing to offer an immediate MLB job. It’s possible the new contract also contains another opt-out that wasn’t in the original deal.

Shreve has pitched parts of 10 seasons in the big leagues. He has a 3.97 ERA in 356 innings between seven clubs. The 33-year-old split last year with the Tigers and Reds. Shreve allowed 4.63 earned runs per nine with solid strikeout (23.3%) and walk (7.3%) numbers through 44 2/3 frames.

Solomon, 27, also pitched in the majors as recently as last season. He has far less MLB experience than Shreve, tallying 27 1/3 innings through 11 appearances in long relief. The Notre Dame product is a former fourth-round draftee of the Astros. He debuted with Houston in 2021 and made five appearances for the Diamondbacks early last season. Arizona ran him through outright waivers in June and he reached minor league free agency at year’s end.

The right-hander opened 2024 in independent ball. He signed with the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League, where he started three games. Solomon’s nine runs allowed in 12 2/3 innings isn’t eye-catching, but he ran a 19:3 strikeout-to-walk ratio that evidently impressed the Rangers enough to give him another chance in affiliated ball.

Solomon has a 6.59 ERA with more walks than strikeouts in his abbreviated MLB work. He has pitched parts of three seasons in the Pacific Coast League, allowing a 6.16 ERA in 261 1/3 innings. Solomon has managed a decent 22.1% strikeout rate while working mostly out of the rotation at the top minor league level. He can pitch in the rotation or in long relief at Round Rock.

Shreve, 33, signed a minor league deal with the Rangers in February but didn’t break camp with the club. Towards the end of March, Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today reported that Shreve, Danny Duffy and Shane Greene were free to explore opt-outs in their deals, since none of that trio would be making the big league team.

It seems that Shreve decided not to opt out at that time, since he reported to Triple-A Round Rock. He has made ten appearances already this year with a 2.61 earned run average. He has nine strikeouts but has issued five walks.

The Rangers are fairly light in terms of left-handed relievers. Brock Burke is on the injured list after punching a wall and requiring surgery to address a broken bone on his non-throwing hand. That left Jacob Latz, who came into this year with just four major league appearances, as the only healthy southpaw in the bullpen.

Regardless, they don’t seem to have a spot for Shreve, so he’ll try his luck on the open market. He has appeared in 367 major league games, debuting back in 2014 with Atlanta and subsequently bouncing to the Yankees, Cardinals, Mets, Pirates, Tigers and Reds. He has a 3.97 ERA in his career, striking out 25.3% of batters faced while giving out walks at a 10.8% clip and getting grounders on 41.6% of balls in play. That walk rate is a tad high but he kept it to 8.8% in 2022 and just 7.3% last year, still striking out about a quarter of batters faced.

The 35-year-old Duffy hasn’t pitched in a big league game since 2021 due to a lengthy series of injuries — most notably a torn flexor tendon that required surgery to repair back in December of 2021. Several setbacks wound up costing Duffy the 2022 season as well. He pitched 35 2/3 minor league innings with Texas last season but walked more than 16% of his opponents on the season, showing some clear rust from his lengthy layoff on the mound. He’s looked better this spring, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks with seven punchouts.

Aside from a brief dalliance in the bullpen in 2015-16, Duffy was a fixture on Kansas City’s starting staff from 2014-21, during which time he logged a 3.82 ERA in 1015 innings while punching out 21.3% of his opponents against an 8.2% walk rate.

Greene, 35, is a former All-Star closer/setup man who peaked with the Tigers and Braves from 2017-20. He’s thrown just three innings in each of the past two MLB seasons but also turned in strong numbers with the Cubs in Triple-A last year. He’s yielded a pair of runs on five hits with a 5-to-2 K/BB ratio and 46% ground-ball rate thus far in spring training.

Greene was at once a high-leverage bullpen arm with both the Tigers and Braves, pitching to a combined 3.25 ERA with 64 saves and 35 holds in 221 2/3 innings from 2017-20 between the two clubs. He reached free agency on the heels of that stretch but didn’t end up signing until the following May, when he returned to the Braves. The right-hander struggled to a 7.23 ERA in 28 innings after that delayed start to the season and hasn’t had much of an opportunity to get back on track since.

Shreve, 33, has pitched in the majors in each of the past 10 seasons. He touts a career 3.97 ERA with a 25.3% strikeout rate and 10.8% walk rate. His velocity has dipped over the past couple seasons, with his heater sitting at just 90.6 mph from 2022-23. He’s pitched to a 5.32 ERA through 71 innings in that time, though there’s reason for more optimism than that mark would suggest.

Shreve boasts better-than-average strikeout and walk rates (24.1% and 7.8%) in spite of the downturn in velocity and has kept the ball on the ground at a solid 43.5% clip. Metrics like FIP (4.55) and particularly SIERA (3.64) are far more bullish than his ERA. In 4 2/3 spring innings, he’s yielded four runs on five hits and a couple of walks while fanning five opponents.

All three of Texas new additions have MLB experience. Of the trio, only Shreve appeared at the big league level a year ago. The 33-year-old split his season between the Tigers and Reds. Initially inked to an offseason minor league pact by Detroit, he made the team out of camp and logged 47 appearances. While his 4.79 ERA over 41 1/3 innings is unspectacular, Shreve struck out a decent 23.3% of opponents against a lower than average 6.7% walk percentage.

Detroit had hoped to drum up trade interest in the veteran reliever. Once the deadline passed without a taker, they released him to give a few more innings to controllable bullpen arms. Shreve latched on with the Reds for three more outings but didn’t carve out a lasting spot in the Cincinnati relief corps. They released him in September.

Shreve has appeared in parts of 10 big league campaigns, suiting up with seven different teams along the way. He’ll go for an eighth in Arlington as he aims for a spot in a bullpen that skews to the right side. Brock Burke is the only southpaw locked into a relief corps that could also include swingman Cody Bradford or rookies Antoine Kelly and Jake Latz. Shreve has held left-handed batters to a fairly modest .222/.295/.403 batting line over the past four seasons. Former Astro Blake Taylor is also in camp as a minor league pickup.

Duffy rejoins the group, marking his second straight season with the Rangers. The longtime Royals starter inked a minor league pact with Texas a year ago. That came on the heels of 18 months wrecked by arm injuries. Duffy suffered a flexor strain midway through the 2021 season. Repeated setbacks necessitated postseason surgery and ultimately cost him all of ’22 as well.

The 35-year-old managed to get back on a mound last June. Assigned to Double-A Frisco, he pitched exclusively out of the bullpen. Duffy turned in a 2.30 ERA over 31 1/3 innings, striking out 28.3% of batters faced. His control was clearly adversely affected by the long layoff, as he walked an untenable 15.2% of hitters at the Double-A level. He issued another eight free passes in 4 1/3 frames of Triple-A work. The Rangers were sufficiently impressed with his form to give him another Spring Training look in hopes that he can dial in the command as he gets further removed from injury. Duffy hasn’t made an MLB appearance since his final start as a Royal on July 16, 2021.

Godoy, 29, is a depth catcher who has 26 games of big league experience. He split that time between the Mariners, Twins and Pirates. The left-handed hitter has a .271/.329/.404 line in parts of four Triple-A campaigns. Godoy spent the ’23 season in the Yankees and Orioles organizations but only made 36 appearances at the top minor league level.

Shreve spent most of the 2023 campaign with the Tigers, making 47 appearances between Opening Day and mid-August. While his 4.79 ERA was uninspiring, his underlying numbers painted a picture of a solid middle reliever: a 46.8% groundball rate, a 6.7% walk rate, and a 3.69 SIERA. Nonetheless, the Tigers eventually chose to prioritize youth and the future, cutting ties with the veteran shortly after the trade deadline.

The 33-year-old quickly latched on with the Reds, signing a minor league deal and reporting to the Louisville Bats. He performed well in six appearances for Cincinnati’s Triple-A affiliate, giving up only one run on two hits while striking out five.

With less than a week remaining in the Triple-A season, it’s unlikely Shreve signs elsewhere before the year is up. However, he should be able to find another minor league deal this winter. As a durable left-handed reliever with ten years of big league experience, teams will undoubtedly be interested in his services.

He landed with the Reds on a minors deal and was one of many pitchers recently ushered to the majors as the club dealt with a COVID outbreak. Over the past couple of weeks, five pitchers and one position player have been placed on the COVID IL, necessitating frequent roster moves as the club tried to continually bring in fresh arms. Shreve pitched 3 1/3 innings for Cincinnati since being added to the roster, allowing one earned run in that time. But as the affected players have been returning to the roster of late, Shreve has now been nudged out.

With the trade deadline long gone, the Reds will place Shreve on waivers in the coming days. If he were to pass through unclaimed, he would have the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency. However, since it’s after September 1, he would not have postseason eligibility with any new club he joins. The Reds are within two games of the final Wild Card spot in the National League, so perhaps that gives Shreve incentive to stick around and hope for a shot at postseason play.

It’s also possible that he garners attention on waivers, based on his track record. His combined 4.63 ERA on the year isn’t especially impressive but his 23.3% strikeout rate and 7.3% walk rate are both solid. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over 367 career appearances. The Tigers are on the hook for what’s left of his salary, meaning a claiming club would only have to pay him the prorated version of the league minimum for any time spent on the roster.

Phillips, 22, will make his major league debut the first time he gets into a game. MLB Pipeline ranks the young right-hander as the club’s fourth best prospect and the 70th best prospect in the sport. He opened the year with a dominant performance at Double-A, posting a 3.34 ERA in 64 2/3 innings of work with an incredible 39.1% strikeout rate. Since receiving a promotion to Triple-A, however, Phillips has begun to struggle. His 40 1/3 innings at the level have yielded a 4.69 ERA, while his strikeout rate has plummeted to 24.2% and his walk rate has ballooned to a massive 16.9%.

Given his age, prospect pedigree and dominance as recently as earlier this season, it’s certainly possible Phillips has a lengthy and successful big league career in his future. In the short-term, however, he’ll need to significantly cut down on the free passes if he hopes to help the 70-67 Reds fight their way into one of the NL Wild Card spots with key pitchers like Williamson and right-hander Hunter Greene out for an unknown amount of time due to the clubhouse’s COVID outbreak.

Shreve, 33, joined the Reds on a minor league deal last month. He had spent the 2023 season with the Tigers prior to that, pitching to a roughly league average 4.79 ERA and 4.06 FIP in 47 appearances with the club. The lefty veteran is in his tenth year as a major league pitcher, with a career 3.88 ERA. While he’s mostly looked the part of a middle reliever throughout his career, it’s worth noting he’s posted a 2.65 ERA with a 34.8% strikeout rate against same-handed hitters this season. With Sam Moll as the only other southpaw in the Cincinnati bullpen as things stand, Shreve seems likely to be able to carve out a specialized role in the Reds’ bullpen going forward.

Joining several of his teammates on the COVID IL is Williamson, who has looked the part of a solid mid-to-back of the rotation starter during his rookie campaign. Across 19 starts with the Reds this year, Williamson has posted a 4.20 ERA (109 ERA+) and a 4.51 FIP in 98 2/3 innings of work. The loss of a reliable rotation arm like Williamson further compounds the club’s pitching woes. In addition to Greene’s move to the COVID IL, the Reds recently lost any hope of left-hander Nick Lodolo returning this season.

Williamson isn’t the only starter hitting the shelf today, either, as Ashcraft moves to the 15-day IL following his start against the Cubs yesterday, in which he allowed three runs over five innings of work while striking out six. It’s been an up-and-down season for Ashcraft, who dominated to a 2.00 ERA in his first six starts this season before posting a brutal 12.82 ERA over his next eight starts. Since June 30, Ashcraft has posted a 2.58 ERA reminiscent of his strong start to the season, though his 19.8% strikeout rate and eight homers allowed in seven starts both leave his long-term viability as a rotation arm in question. Overall, he’s delivered a 4.76 ERA and 5.07 FIP in 145 2/3 innings of work this season.

Without Williamson and Ashcraft, the club’s rotation is facing a great deal of uncertainty, with only rookie Andrew Abbott as a surefire big league starter on the roster. Lyon Richardson took the ball against the Cubs for the second game of a doubleheader last night, but sports an ugly 6.75 ERA across three starts in the majors. The club will likely have to turn to the likes of Double-A swingman Carson Spiers and journeyman Brett Kennedy to take on innings with most of the club’s rotation out of commission.

Shreve agreed to a minor league deal with the Tigers this offseason and made the major league roster out of spring training. He made 47 appearances for the club before being DFA’d, pitching to a 4.79 ERA in 41 1/3 innings pitched. Despite his high ERA, he posted a 3.66 SIERA and the best strikeout-to-walk ratio of his career. Even more impressive, his 33.9% chase rate ranks in the 92nd percentile of MLB pitchers, per Baseball Savant. Nevertheless, he was designated for assignment to make room for Will Vest on the Tigers’ 26-man roster. Detroit is still on the hook for Shreve’s salary, so Cincinnati will only have to pay him the prorated portion of the league minimum for any time he spends on the MLB roster.

The Reds will be the seventh organization Shreve has played for since he was drafted by the Braves in 2010. He will report to Triple-A, but the southpaw will serve as valuable depth for the major league club. With Reiver Sanmartin out for the season, the Reds only have two left-handed relievers on the 40-man roster: Alex Young and Sam Moll. Young has pitched well this year, putting up a 2.96 ERA in 53 games, while Moll has done excellent work since he was acquired from the Athletics at the trade deadline, pitching to a 2.35 ERA in his first seven appearances. Still, Cincinnati will be glad to have some veteran depth at Triple-A. Since Shreve was acquired before the September 1 deadline, he will be eligible for the Reds’ postseason roster should the team make the playoffs.

The Reds bullpen has struggled over the past month, with a 4.85 ERA and 0.0 FanGraphs WAR in 27 games. They have blown four saves in 13 chances and lost seven of 11 decisions in that time. As the Reds compete for the NL Central crown (or a Wild Card berth), they’ll hope to see their bullpen return to its first-half form. Over the team’s first 95 games, Reds relievers posted a 3.86 ERA and ranked sixth in baseball with 3.5 fWAR.
