Chad Moeller – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 11 Mar 2011 18:02:44 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Rockies Release Chad Moeller https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/rockies-release-chad-moeller.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/03/rockies-release-chad-moeller.html#respond Fri, 11 Mar 2011 18:02:44 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/03/rockies-release-chad-moeller.html The Rockies have released catcher Chad Moeller, reports Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post (as tweeted by his Post colleague Troy Renck).  According to the club's official Twitter feed, the move was made so Moeller "can seek more playing time with another team."

Moeller, 36, signed a minor league deal with Colorado in January.  The 11-year veteran has also played for the Twins, Diamondbacks, Brewers, Reds, Dodgers, and Orioles in his career, plus two stints with the Yankees, including nine games with the Bombers last season.

Moeller has never provided much pop (a .640 career OPS) but it wouldn't be a surprise seeing him sign with another team that is in need of an experienced catcher.  Two clubs in the last week alone have had vacancies open up behind the plate — the Astros (in the wake of Jason Castro's season-ending injury) and the Padres (now that Gregg Zaun has retired).

Rockies Looking To Add Pieces https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/01/rockies-looking-to-add-pieces.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/01/rockies-looking-to-add-pieces.html#comments Wed, 26 Jan 2011 10:12:39 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/01/rockies-looking-to-add-pieces.html The Rockies are considering available free agents as they look to add rotation depth, left-handed relief and infield help, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The Rockies would like to add a veteran starter and David Bush and Rodrigo Lopez are among the team’s targets.

The team would also like to sign a left-handed reliever to a minor league deal. Matt Reynolds (21 career appearances) and Franklin Morales (88 career appearances) are the team's current options, so they’re eyeing veteran help. Former Rockie Joe Beimel does not appear to be an option, according to the Denver Post.

Alfredo Amezaga, Cristian Guzman and Aaron Miles are among the backup infielders the club is considering. The Rockies appear to prefer Amezaga to Miles, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. The Rockies still have interest in a higher profile infielder: Michael Young. Young will earn $16MM in each of the next three seasons and the Rangers say they expect him to stay in Texas.

Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine told  Mike Ferrin and Morgan Ensberg on MLB Network Radio that  “we’re looking at [Young] as our primary DH but also a guy who’s going to play all over the infield.” The team expects Young to get plenty of playing time, even though they just acquired former division rival Mike Napoli.

The Rockies also signed veteran catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America.

Chad Moeller Clears Waivers https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/yankees-designate-chad-moeller-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/yankees-designate-chad-moeller-for-assignment.html#comments Sat, 26 Jun 2010 19:37:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/yankees-designate-chad-moeller-for-assignment.html SATURDAY, 7:37pm: Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News tweets that Moeller has cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A.

MONDAY, 6:15pm: The Yankees have designated Chad Moeller for assignment, tweets Sweeny Murti of WFAN. Colin Curtis, who was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, will take Moeller's place on the roster.

Moeller joined the big-league club after Jorge Posada's injury, starting just four games and hitting .182/.250/.364 in 12 plate appearances. The 35-year-old backstop has been well-traveled over the past few years, spending time with the Orioles, Dodgers, Reds, Brewers, and Yanks (twice) since 2006.

Yankees Sign Chad Moeller, Robby Hammock https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/yankees-sign-chad-moeller.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/yankees-sign-chad-moeller.html#comments Sat, 03 Apr 2010 10:55:46 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/yankees-sign-chad-moeller.html The Yankees have signed veteran catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league contract according to Chad Jennings of The Journal News, just two days after the Orioles released him.

With catchers Jorge Posada, Francisco Cervelli, and Mike Rivera all battling minor injuries, Moeller will provide the Yankees with some depth at Triple-A. Jennings says the team is expected to release Rivera. Moeller hit .258/.313/.438 in 100 plate appearances for the O's last season, and played for the Yanks in 2008.

Jennings adds that the Yanks also signed utility man Robby Hammock to a minor league deal as well. The former Diamondback spent last season in the minors, and is a career .255/.313/.409 hitter in 525 big league plate appearances.

Orioles Release Chad Moeller https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/orioles-release-chad-moeller.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/04/orioles-release-chad-moeller.html#comments Thu, 01 Apr 2010 09:31:26 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/04/orioles-release-chad-moeller.html The Orioles granted catcher Chad Moeller his request to be released, reports Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.  The Orioles re-signed Moeller to a minor league deal in December, but recently chose Craig Tatum to back up Matt Wieters.  Moeller refused a minor league assignment.  The Sun's Peter Schmuck questioned the Tatum selection in an article yesterday.

Zrebiec notes that the Orioles are now in the market for a backup catcher to help out at Triple A.

Orioles Re-Sign Chad Moeller https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/orioles-resign-chad-moeller.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/orioles-resign-chad-moeller.html#respond Fri, 04 Dec 2009 15:08:46 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/orioles-resign-chad-moeller.html Catcher Chad Moeller agreed to a minor league deal with the Orioles, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun.  The Orioles had declined Moeller's $850K option, preferring to have him on a minor league contract.  Zrebiec says Moeller will battle recent pickups Craig Tatum and Michel Hernandez for the chance to be Matt Wieters' backup.

Moeller, 35 in February, hit .258/.313/.438 in 100 plate appearances this year while catching 239 innings.

Orioles Roundup: Mora, Moeller, Datz https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/orioles-roundup-mora-moeller-datz.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/10/orioles-roundup-mora-moeller-datz.html#respond Thu, 29 Oct 2009 16:02:31 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/10/orioles-roundup-mora-moeller-datz.html The Orioles have declined Melvin Mora's $8MM option for 2010, likely ending his successful tenure with Baltimore.

Mora struggled in 2009, hitting just .260/.321/.358 in 496 plate appearances this past season. He will be 38 years old, and will likely command far less than his option number as a free agent.

However, for teams looking for a third baseman, Mora might be a reasonable option. He is just a year removed from hitting .285/.342/.483, while his Ultimate Zone Rating was still 1.1 runs saved above average per 150 games in 2009.

Mora criticized Dave Trembley, Baltimore's manager, in August over a lack of playing time. Therefore, once Baltimore announced Trembley's return, it became far less likely the team would retain Mora, even at a lesser cost.

Mora hit 158 home runs with Baltimore after coming over from the New York Mets in a deal for Mike Bordick.

Other Baltimore moves this afternoon included declining the $850K option on catcher Chad Moeller and outrighting outfielder Jeff Fiorentino, pitchers Chris Lambert and Jim Miller and catcher Guillermo Rodriguez after each cleared waivers.

And last but not least, Jeff Datz was named bench coach, after spending 19 years in the Cleveland Indians' organization. Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com has some reaction from Trembley to the hire.

Chad Moeller Designated For Assignment https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/chad-moeller-designated-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/chad-moeller-designated-for-assignment.html#respond Fri, 29 May 2009 14:07:18 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/05/chad-moeller-designated-for-assignment.html According to a press release, the Orioles designated backup catcher Chad Moeller for assignment to make room for super-prospect Matt Wieters.  Moeller, 34, hit .200/.259/.360 in 54 plate appearances.  But more importantly, it's Wieters Time!

On a related note, Tom Tango asked today:

Please, just one time I’d like to hear an honest reason for why star players are being held back.  Just once.

Matt Wieters Update https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/matt-wieters-update.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/05/matt-wieters-update.html#respond Fri, 08 May 2009 10:54:24 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/05/matt-wieters-update.html Matt Wieters began the season as baseball's number one prospect, but we haven't heard much about him so far in 2009. Some took notice when he missed a bit of time because of a hamstring issue, but his season at AAA Norfolk has mostly been quiet. He's played well, though not incredibly, hitting one homer and batting .297/.391/.405 with 12 walks and 17 strikeouts. Gregg Zaun and Chad Moeller have combined for only 21 hits in 100 at bats for the O's, so they're not blocking Wieters' path. His main obstacle is time.

  • If the Orioles called Wieters up today, he'd accumulate enough service time this year (almost 150 days) to become a Super Two player. This means he'd cost the Orioles more money in the future because he'd go to arbitration four times.
  • If they wait until June 1st to call Wieters up, he won't accumulate more than 126 days service time. This would likely prevent him from becoming a Super Two and would likely save the Orioles millions of dollars in years ahead.
  • Waiting until June 1st or later also allows the Orioles to make sure Wieters is ready for the majors when he arrives. They can endure their soft-hitting catchers this year, because they're not a contender, so it would be a surprise to see the prospect called up soon.

  • As more teams lock up lefty relievers, Jon Paul Morosi sees the Tigers as more likely to land Joe Beimel.

  • Peter Schmuck hears that the Orioles have signed catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal.

Odds and Ends: Posada, Uribe, Wise, Red Sox https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/05/odds-and-ends-p-10.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/05/odds-and-ends-p-10.html#respond Sat, 31 May 2008 16:39:57 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2008/05/odds-and-ends-p-10.html Today’s links…

  • Jorge Posada could rejoin the Yankees as early as Wednesday (a few reports suggested Tuesday). Kat O’Brien of Newsday says the Yanks will hold on to both Jose Molina and Chad Moeller for "a while" after Posada returns, but as Peter Abraham points out on the LoHud Yankees blog, the Yankees have a real need for a set-up man now that Joba Chamberlain is starting.
  • Juan Uribe has been activated from the 15-day DL, and although Ozzie Guillen said he wasn’t guaranteed  playing time, they had to make room on the roster nonetheless.  DeWayne Wise was designated for assigment.
  • The news that Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket comes as a shock to yours truly, but it underscores just how much starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, even with Daisuke Matsuzaka currently on the 15-day DL. Free agent pickup Bartolo Colon has worked out so far as a low-risk, high-reward signing. They’ve also got a good spot-starter in Justin Masterson, currently in Double A. And as if that weren’t enough, Curt Schilling could start throwing off a mound June 6. The odd man out could bring something useful in a trade. Just idle speculation, and I know there’s no such thing as too much pitching…but the Red Sox do have some holes to fill.
