Augie Ojeda – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Sun, 06 Jan 2013 12:09:50 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Quick Hits: Posey, McCann, Berkman, Mets, Yankees https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/quick-hits-posey-mccann-berkman-mets-yankees.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/01/quick-hits-posey-mccann-berkman-mets-yankees.html#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2013 12:09:50 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2013/01/quick-hits-posey-mccann-berkman-mets-yankees.html In today's column, Buster Olney of ESPN.com (Insider sub. req'd) writes that it would make sense for the Giants to look into a Joey Votto-type deal for catcher Buster Posey.  The Reds locked Votto up on a ten-year contract extension in April of last year, keeping him in Cincinnati through 2023.  In the meantime, the Giants have a fascinating arbitration case on their hands when it comes to Posey and Matt Swartz broke it all down with some interesting comparables last week.  Here's more from around baseball..

  • Braves GM Frank Wren told Jim Duquette (Twitter link) and Jim Bowden of SiriusXM that the team and catcher Brian McCann have agreed to table contract talks until the end of the year.  McCann is entering the final year of his contract and will earn $12MM.  Wren also told the duo that the club hasn't closed the door on free agent Michael Bourn.
  • Olney also writes that some rival officials were surprised by the $10MM deal Lance Berkman signed with the Rangers.  However, Texas likely reasoned that in an offseason where Mike Napoli got $13MM per season (assuming his deal goes through) and David Ortiz got a two-year deal for $26MM, Berkman at $10MM isn't an overpay.
  • Several unresolved questions linger for the Mets and Yankees at this stage of the offseason, writes Ken Davidoff of the New York Post.  The Mets are in the market for pitching and outfield help and they're more likely to get a notable name in the former than the latter.  The Yankees are also in search of some extra pieces but GM Brian Cashman hasn't had any trouble finding gems in mid-to-late winter before.

In 18 games for Iowa this season, Ojeda hit just .200/.281/.220.  In nine seasons of big league play, the veteran has a career .234/.320/.313 slash line.  Ojeda last appeared in the majors in 2010 as a member of the Diamondbacks.

Cubs Sign Braden Looper, Augie Ojeda https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/01/cubs-sign-braden-looper-augie-ojeda.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/01/cubs-sign-braden-looper-augie-ojeda.html#comments Mon, 31 Jan 2011 08:39:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/01/cubs-sign-braden-looper-augie-ojeda.html MONDAY: Looper's deal pays him $1MM if he makes the team and includes about $2MM more in incentives, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter).

THURSDAY: The Cubs signed righty Braden Looper and infielder Augie Ojeda to minor league deals today, the team announced in a press release.

Looper, 36, last pitched for the Brewers in 2009.  He threw for the Cubs before the 2010 season, but ultimately decided to sit out.  Looper converted to starting in 2007, making 97 starts over a three-year span.  He limits walks and keeps the ball on the ground fairly well, and could find innings with the Cubs if one of their starting five gets injured.

Ojeda, 36, broke into the Majors in 2000 with the Cubs.  He's also served as a middle infield backup for the Twins and Diamondbacks.  Ojeda was non-tendered by Arizona at the December deadline after earning $825K in 2010.

In total the Cubs invited 21 non-roster players to Spring Training, including Reed Johnson, Todd Wellemeyer, and Scott Moore.  The team decided to bring in multiple veterans they knew from previous stints.

Rangers Interested In Trading For Utility Infielder https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/rangers-looking-for-utility-infield-help.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/rangers-looking-for-utility-infield-help.html#comments Wed, 24 Mar 2010 20:06:36 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/rangers-looking-for-utility-infield-help.html In spite of the deal with Oakland that brought Gregorio Petit to Texas, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that Petit will probably end up in Triple-A rather than fill the Rangers' need for a utility infielder on their big league roster.  Texas has been looking to fill their backup infield void for weeks, and a few new options have appeared on the Rangers' radar for a possible deal.

Augie Ojeda (who we know the D'Backs are shopping) is one option that the Rangers have an interest in, Sullivan says.  Sullivan proposes that right-hander Luis Mendoza might be a good fit to be dealt for Ojeda since Arizona wants pitching and Mendoza is out of optionsWillie Bloomquist and Kevin Frandsen are also possible options, Sullivan reports.  Frandsen is another player known to be on the trade market, and that same MLBTR piece also cites the Giants as a team that could be interested in a player of Ojeda's type.

Former Ranger Ramon Vazquez has been mentioned in trade talks this winter and we know the Pirates want to move him.  But Sullivan says Texas doesn't want to acquire Vazquez at the cost of Mendoza, and you have to figure that the Rangers might just pick Vazquez up if Pittsburgh is forced to release him.

D’Backs Still Looking To Trade Snyder, Ojeda https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/dbacks-still-looking-to-trade-snyder-ojeda.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/dbacks-still-looking-to-trade-snyder-ojeda.html#comments Wed, 24 Mar 2010 14:48:17 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/dbacks-still-looking-to-trade-snyder-ojeda.html The Diamondbacks are still looking to trade catcher Chris Snyder and infielder Augie Ojeda, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Piecoro says Snyder has looked healthy this spring, after having back surgery in September.  The Blue Jays called off a Snyder-Lyle Overbay swap in November because of concerns about the catcher's back.  Snyder is owed a hefty $11.25MM over the next two years.  According to Piecoro, the Brewers have shown interest in Snyder.  Milwaukee currently has Gregg Zaun and George Kottaras behind the dish.  They're facing a pitching roster crunch, and the D'Backs could use another arm.

Ojeda, owed $825K this year and under team control through 2011, would obviously be easier to move.  Piecoro says Ojeda became available once Tony Abreu demonstrated the ability to play shortstop.  The Rangers probably aren't a fit anymore, having acquired Gregorio Petit today.

Diamondbacks Sign Kelly Johnson https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/dbacks-close-to-deal-with-kelly-johnson.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/dbacks-close-to-deal-with-kelly-johnson.html#respond Wed, 30 Dec 2009 15:14:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/dbacks-close-to-deal-with-kelly-johnson.html The Diamondbacks signed second baseman Kelly Johnson to a one-year, $2.35MM deal today.  They'll also retain his rights for 2011 as an arbitration-eligible player.  The impending agreement was first reported yesterday by Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.  This morning SI's Jon Heyman tweeted that an agreement had been reached, and Piecoro later added the contract value.  Piecoro also wrote yesterday that signing Johnson could make Augie Ojeda expendable.

Johnson, 28 in February, lost the Braves' starting second baseman job to Martin Prado in July and hit .224/.303/.389 overall.  He spent time on the DL for right wrist tendinitis.  MLBTR learned earlier this month that the Pirates, Cardinals, and Astros also had interest in Johnson, who was non-tendered by the Braves on December 12th.

Diamondbacks Notes: Johnson, Snyder, Bailey https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/diamondbacks-notes-johnson-snyder-bailey.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/diamondbacks-notes-johnson-snyder-bailey.html#respond Mon, 28 Dec 2009 20:53:55 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/diamondbacks-notes-johnson-snyder-bailey.html Some Diamondbacks tidbits courtesy of MLB.com's Steve Gilbert…

  • The Diamondbacks have about $3MM left to spend and are expecting to hear back from Kelly Johnson in the next couple of days regarding their offer, according to Gilbert's MLB.com blog
  • The acquisition of Johnson could shift Tony Abreu into an infield utility role, making infielder Augie Ojeda expendable.
  • While inking Johnson would put Arizona at their budget, trading Chris Snyder and the $4.75MM he is owed next season would give the D-Backs some more wiggle room.  You may recall that they nearly dealt Snyder to the Blue Jays for Lyle Overbay, before Toronto's concern over his surgically-repaired back triggered them to call off the swap.
  • Gilbert also reports (via Twitter) that the Diamondbacks have signed outfielder Jeff Bailey to a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training.  The 31-year-old hit .262/.362/.424 with 10 HRs in 63 games for Boston's Triple-A affiliate in 2009.

D’Backs Rumors: Kelly Johnson, Randy Winn https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/dbacks-rumors-kelly-johnson-randy-winn.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/dbacks-rumors-kelly-johnson-randy-winn.html#respond Mon, 14 Dec 2009 14:27:52 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/dbacks-rumors-kelly-johnson-randy-winn.html The latest on the D'Backs from Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic

  • The D'Backs are interested in free agent second baseman Kelly Johnson.  Piecoro says signing Johnson could prompt the team to trade Augie Ojeda, who recently agreed to a $850K contract.
  • Piecoro is "hearing Randy Winn's name as a possibility" for Arizona.  The 35-year-old hit just .262/.318/.353 for the Giants this year, but continued to excel defensively at the outfield corners.  In November, Winn's agent Craig Landis said his client is looking for an everyday job.
  • Piecoro says the D'Backs are likely to sell righty Tony Barnette's rights to the Yakult Swallows.
  • Piecoro writes of indications the D'Backs are not interested in Chien-Ming Wang, as they'd prefer not to bring in another health risk.

Odds & Ends: Diaz, Cedeno, German, Ojeda https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/odds-ends-ojeda-twins-de-la-cruz.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/odds-ends-ojeda-twins-de-la-cruz.html#respond Fri, 11 Dec 2009 20:45:23 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/odds-ends-ojeda-twins-de-la-cruz.html A few tidbits from around the majors….

  • Blue Jays reliever Jeremy Accardo hopes to be non-tendered tomorrow, writes MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.  The righty, 28 this month, dealt with a groin injury and bounced up and down between Triple A and the Majors this year.  He earned $900K.
  • Cases of players avoiding arbitration and signing for 2010, according to the AP: Matt Diaz of the Braves at $2.55MM, Ronny Cedeno of the Pirates at $1.125MM, and Esteban German of the Rangers at $600K. Diaz gets a 106% raise, heading into his third arbitration year.
  • The AP also notes that the Nationals signed pitcher Ryan Speier for $425K.  The 30-year-old toiled at Triple A for the Rockies this year, mainly.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert (via Twitter) reports that the Diamondbacks have avoided going to arbitration with Augie Ojeda by re-signing the veteran infielder to a one-year deal.  Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic says the contract is worth $825K.  Ojeda, 34, has spent the last three seasons with Arizona and hit .246/.340/.345 in 309 plate appearances in 2009.  The defensive specialist is a valuable utilityman, able to play second, third and shortstop.
  • Twins GM Bill Smith tells Kelsie Smith of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that his traditionally low-spending team has "substantial funds" to cover arbitration raises and potential signings that could raise Minnesota's payroll into the $90MM neighborhood for next season.  The general manager was predictably non-committal when asked if "substantial" translated to "enough to extend Joe Mauer."
  • NPB Tracker passes on news from Japanese site Sanspo.com that the Yakult Swallows will announce next week that they have signed Eulogio De La Cruz.  The right-hander was released by the Padres on Wednesday.  De La Cruz has an 11.84 ERA in 15 appearances over three seasons with San Diego, Florida and Detroit.
  • The White Sox seem ready to stick with Randy Williams as the only left-handed reliever (besides, of course, set-up man Matt Thornton) next season, as Chicago GM Kenny Williams told Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.  Gonzales notes that if the club changes its mind, a possible target could be former White Sox reliever Neal Cotts, who will be non-tendered by the Cubs tomorrow.

Twitter Rumors: Capps, Felix, Harden, Pierre https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/twitter-rumors-3.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/twitter-rumors-3.html#respond Wed, 09 Dec 2009 16:00:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/12/twitter-rumors-3.html A fresh batch of Twitter rumors, for those of you with extra-short attention spans…

  • MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch learned that the Pirates plan to tender a contract to Matt Capps.
  • Stubborn Dodgers GM Ned Colletti says he has no regrets about not offering arbitration to Randy Wolf, reports Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. TimesHernandez also notes that the Dodgers are considering Ronnie Belliard, Craig Counsell, Juan Uribe, and Jamey Carroll as second base options.  The Reds also like Carroll, says MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.
  • Yahoo's Steve Henson says the Rockies are open to re-signing Jason Marquis at a reduced number (less than the $9.875MM he made in '09).
  • SI's Jon Heyman believes Felix Hernandez is seeking six years and $100MM, while the Mariners are thinking four years plus an option at less than $50MM.  That phrasing makes a possible divide seem larger than it is, since those last two years of the deal would be the most expensive (more than $15MM per year).  At any rate, Shannon Drayer and Mike Salk learned that no numbers have been exchanged on Felix yet.
  • La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen wants Mike Redmond to back up A.J. Pierzynski.
  • MLB.com's Steve Gilbert says the Rangers may have interest in arbitration-eligible D'Backs infielder Augie Ojeda.  The Rangers added Joe Inglett off waivers, but were said to still be looking at utility infield candidates.
  • Morosi tweets that Rich Harden is "willing to sign a one-year deal with a lot of incentives."  Will he exceed Brad Penny's $7.5MM base salary?  Morosi names the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mariners as the most serious suitors.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the Tigers have interest in Juan Pierre, and are "looking for a third team to supply the pitcher L.A. needs."  Odd, since the Tigers have more bad pitching contracts than anyone.  The Tigers apparently prefer to unload Carlos Guillen.
  • Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the Pirates are not interested in bringing back Brian Giles.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Red Sox "have two or three teams they could trade Mike Lowell to right now" if they'd take a similar contract back.  Looking at our Bad Contract Swap Meet I don't see any obvious matches for one year and $12MM.
  • There's been some tire-kicking with the Phillies and Ron Mahay, writes Andy Martino of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Red Sox were linked to Mahay by Michael Silverman on MondayMartino also says the Phillies met with John Smoltz's agent this morning, "but discussions remain informal."
  • Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star characterizes the White Sox and Red Sox interest in Coco Crisp as "low-level," but says that's still more than the Royals have shown.  Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports says the White Sox would consider Crisp, Mike Cameron, and Marlon Byrd. ESPN's Mike Salk notes that the Mariners spoke to Byrd's agent.
  • Dutton also has the Red Sox eyeing Ryan Shealy on a minor league deal.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports names the most asked-about Padres: Heath Bell, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Adrian Gonzalez (in that order).  He says the Padres are "not hearing anything compelling on Bell."  MLB.com's Corey Brock says about eight teams inquired on Kouzmanoff.  Surprised not to see Kevin Correia mentioned by Rosenthal.  He'd be a great affordable option for a team like the Brewers.  ESPN's Buster Olney heard from rival execs who expect the Padres to get second-line prospects for Kouzmanoff and Correia.
  • The Mets appear to find a Luis Castillo deal unlikely, says Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
  • ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Yankees are shopping their #1 pick in tomorrow's Rule 5 draft, which they acquired for Brian Bruney.  If they don't trade the pick, Yahoo's Steve Henson says the Yankees could use it on pitcher Arquimedes Caminero.

D’Backs Search For Pitching https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/dbacks-search-for-pitching.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/dbacks-search-for-pitching.html#respond Thu, 12 Nov 2009 15:28:08 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2009/11/dbacks-search-for-pitching.html Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic brings home a bunch of Diamondbacks hot stove buzz from the GM Meetings…

  • The Diamondbacks would have to give up their second-round pick if they sign a Type A free agent who turned down arbitration.  GM Josh Byrnes told Piecoro he'd consider it if the player came at a discount.  You can check our free agent list to see all the types.
  • Piecoro wouldn't be surprised to see Livan Hernandez return as the D'Backs' fifth starter.  He wouldn't be the main rotation pickup; the bigger targets are probably Randy Wolf, Jason Marquis, and Brad Penny.
  • Piecoro can't find a team that would be able to send the D'Backs a pitcher for catcher Chris Snyder.  The Royals, Mets, Reds, Brewers, and Astros don't fit, in Piecoro's opinion, while the Blue Jays already nixed a deal.  The Rays, Nationals, Mariners, and Giants may also be looking for a catcher, but they might not match up either.
  • The D'Backs would like to bring back arbitration-eligible infielder Augie Ojeda.
