Adam Everett – MLB Trade Rumors https://www.mlbtraderumors.com Fri, 13 Jan 2012 09:17:00 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 Indians Hire Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/indians-hire-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/01/indians-hire-adam-everett.html#comments Fri, 13 Jan 2012 09:17:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2012/01/indians-hire-adam-everett.html Adam Everett, who played 34 games with the Indians last year, is back in uniform for the Tribe, but not as a player. The Indians announced that they hired the longtime infielder as a special assistant to baseball operations. He’ll instruct infielders at the Indians’ Major League and minor league camps this Spring Training and provide infield instruction and evaluation during the regular season.

The Indians released Everett in June to create roster space for third base prospect Lonnie Chisenhall. The 34-year-old spent most of his 11-year career as a shortstop, though he appeared at second and third for the Indians in 2011. If his playing career has indeed ended, he'll retire with a .242/.294/.346 line for the Astros, Tigers, Twins and Indians and career earnings approaching $12MM. Everett never won a Gold Glove, but owns an impressive UZR/150 of 15.0 at shortstop.

Indians Release Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/06/indians-release-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/06/indians-release-adam-everett.html#respond Thu, 30 Jun 2011 14:42:33 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2011/06/indians-release-adam-everett.html The Indians announced that they released Adam Everett after the infielder cleared waivers. Cleveland designated Everett for assignment earlier in the week to create roster space for callup Lonnie Chisenhall.

Everett, 34, played second, short and third for the Indians this year. Though he has never been known for his bat, his .217/.277/.233 line through 67 plate appearances was not enough for him to keep his roster spot, especially with promising infield talent on Cleveland's Triple-A club.

  • The Royals optioned Vin Mazzaro to Triple-A and returned Louis Coleman, Luis Mendoza and Zach MinerIrving Falu and Lance Zawadzki to minor league camp, according to the team. Mazzaro should join the Royals in the middle of April when the club needs another starter.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski told Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that the organization has never been stronger during his nine-year tenure in the Motor City. “We have now a nice blend of young players at the big-league level, veteran players and some guys in the prime of their career,” Dombrowski said. “And they’re backed up by some guys behind them that are prospects that are talented."
  • Adam Everett told Jordan Bastian and Tom Singer of MLB.com that he would have been ready to contemplate retirement if he hadn't made the Indians' Opening Day roster.

  • The Rockies will reach out to pitcher Jeff Francis this week, tweets Troy Renck of The Denver Post.  There's a chance that the left-hander returns to Colorado but he might have a better opportunity elsewhere.
  • Brandon Webb, who officially joined the Rangers earlier today, says that he won't rush himself back in order to start the season in the rotation, writes ESPN.com's Richard Durrett.
  • Greg Johns of MLB.com likes the Mariners' signing of Miguel Olivo.

Indians Sign Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/indians-sign-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/indians-sign-adam-everett.html#respond Thu, 16 Dec 2010 13:48:16 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/indians-sign-adam-everett.html The Indians signed Adam Everett to a minor league deal and invited him to Spring Training, the team announced. The 33-year-old will earn $700K plus incentives if he makes the team, or $15K per month at Triple-A, according to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (Twitter link). The Nationals and Rockies also expressed interest in the infielder at the Winter Meetings. Career Sports represents Everett.

Everett batted just .185/.221/.247 for the Tigers in 89 plate appearances last year, before Detroit released him. If he can rebound to the .238/.325/.613 line he posted in 2009, the Indians would likely be happy. The defensive specialist has appeared in 846 big league games, but has only played one inning at a position other than shortstop.

Nationals, Rockies, Indians Eyeing Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rockies-indians-eyeing-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/12/rockies-indians-eyeing-adam-everett.html#respond Tue, 07 Dec 2010 19:20:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/12/rockies-indians-eyeing-adam-everett.html 7:20pm: The Nationals are also considering Eckstein, according to Bill Ladson of MLB.com.

1:57pm: The Rockies and Indians are eyeing slick-fielding shortstop Adam Everett for a utility role, tweets ESPN's Jayson Stark.  Everett sat out the last three months of the season after the Tigers released him in June.  He played only 31 games this year.  Everett has played shortstop almost exclusively in his pro career, so he'd have to learn the other positions to act as a true utility infielder.

The Rockies also have an eye on Cardinals shortstop Brendan Ryan for shortstop protection, tweets Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.

Adam Everett Intends To Play In 2011 https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/adam-everett-intends-to-play-in-2011.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/11/adam-everett-intends-to-play-in-2011.html#comments Mon, 08 Nov 2010 22:00:52 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/11/adam-everett-intends-to-play-in-2011.html The agent for Adam Everett told MLB.com's Jason Beck that his client intends to play in 2011 and has heard from multiple interested teams. Clubs looking for a cheap, defense-first shortstop could turn to the 33-year-old, but they shouldn't expect much offense from him. Everett batted just .185/.221/.247 for the Tigers in 89 plate appearances last year, before Detroit released him.

The trade market for shortstops isn't deep and the free agent market isn't either, but it just got a little more interesting. The Chiba Lotte Marines will post Japanese batting champion Tsuyoshi Nishioka this week, according to Tim Kurkjian of ESPN The Magazine

Astros Not Looking For Shortstop Help https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/astros-are-not-looking-for-a-shortstop.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/astros-are-not-looking-for-a-shortstop.html#comments Mon, 28 Jun 2010 22:30:38 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/astros-are-not-looking-for-a-shortstop.html The Astros are not looking outside the organization for a shortstop, GM Ed Wade told Brian McTaggart of MLB.com. Despite Tommy Manzella’s broken finger, the Astros are content to play Geoff Blum and Oswaldo Navarro at short for the next five weeks or so.

"Right now we're not actively looking for a shortstop,” Wade said. “That said, if something came along we thought would make sense, we'd pursue it."

Navarro, 25, was hitting .298/.400/.466 at Triple A when the Astros recalled him. Wade wants to give the Venezuelan infielder the chance to prove that he belongs in the majors instead of relying exclusively on Blum or an outside replacement. Longtime Astro Adam Everett is one free agent shortstop for interested teams to consider, but it seems more likely that he’ll sign with the Red Sox, Angels or Rockies. The 29-47 Astros will presumably be sellers rather than buyers between now and July 31st.

Red Sox Interested In Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/red-sox-interested-in-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/red-sox-interested-in-adam-everett.html#comments Wed, 23 Jun 2010 15:47:19 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/red-sox-interested-in-adam-everett.html The Red Sox have some interest in Adam Everett, a source tells Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. The defense-first shortstop is a free agent and would cost Boston only $220K. The Tigers, who released Everett, would be responsible for the rest of his salary.

Everett's salary would not prevent the Red Sox from adding him, but roster space could. Bradford says the Red Sox won’t likely sign Everett or anyone else until a roster spot opens up. Everett seems like a fit, since Boston is looking to add a defensively-oriented shortstop to back up Marco Scutaro, according to assistant GM Ben Cherington. The Red Sox, who now have Bill Hall backing up at short, drafted Everett back in 1998.

Boston’s Areas Of Need https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/bostons-areas-of-need.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/bostons-areas-of-need.html#comments Tue, 22 Jun 2010 16:19:14 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/bostons-areas-of-need.html Red Sox assistant GM Ben Cherington told Jim Bowden of Sirius XM Radio that Boston will consider improving its bullpen, adding a defense-first shortstop and finding outfield help this summer (Twitter link). Red Sox relievers have combined for a 4.18 ERA and a 1.85 K/BB ratio, so the 'pen has pitched respectably. Still, the team could use a top arm or two behind Jonathan Papelbon and Daniel Bard.

Adam Everett, now a free agent, would likely be an option for any club looking to acquire a strong defensive shortstop. The Red Sox could also consider John McDonald, who backed up current Boston shortstop Marco Scutaro when both were with the Blue Jays last year.

Mike Cameron, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jeremy Hermida and J.D. Drew have all missed time with injuries this year, but replacements like Daniel Nava and Darnell McDonald have filled in admirably. The Red Sox just called up Josh Reddick, but could look outside the organization for outfield help. David DeJesus seems like a fit, since the Red Sox would prefer to add a left-handed hitter.

Rockies May Pursue Infield Depth https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/rockies-may-pursue-infield-depth.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/rockies-may-pursue-infield-depth.html#comments Fri, 18 Jun 2010 18:11:00 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/rockies-may-pursue-infield-depth.html Tracy Ringolsby of FOX Sports reports that the Rockies received some bad news today, finding out Troy Tulowitzki has broken his left wrist and will likely miss at least the next six weeks. While the Rockies can't hope to sufficiently replace their superstar's production, GM Dan O'Dowd said the team may look into trading for infield depth, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

Yesterday, we examined another club that might need a shortstop: the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels have since expressed optimism about Erick Aybar's health, meaning an infield acquisition probably won't be necessary. However, many of the same names we mentioned as possibilities for the Halos could be options for the Rockies. Stephen Drew is an unlikely target for a team in need of a stopgap solution, but the Rockies could look at players like Adam Everett, Cesar Izturis, Omar Vizquel, and Ryan Theriot.

In the meantime, former first-round pick Chris Nelson has been called up to replace Tulowitzki on the roster, and Clint Barmes and Jonathan Herrera should see increased playing time. If they're unable to contribute more offensively than they have to date, the Rockies could be forced to make a move.

Tigers Release Adam Everett https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/tigers-release-adam-everett.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/tigers-release-adam-everett.html#comments Tue, 15 Jun 2010 14:26:54 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/tigers-release-adam-everett.html The Tigers released Adam Everett, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press. They didn't find any takers for the shortstop after designating him for assignment about ten days ago. The Tigers signed Everett to a one-year $1.55MM deal that had the potential to become a bargain.

Everett has always been a terrific defender, and though the sample size is limited, UZR suggests his glove has been good once again in 2010. Everett made just one error this season, but his batting line fell to .185/.221/.247 in 89 plate appearances, so the Tigers were willing to let him go.

Despite his poor performance at the plate, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Everett sign on with someone. There aren't many reliable free agent middle infielders, especially not with Everett's defensive ability.

Tigers Designate Adam Everett For Assignment https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/tigers-designate-adam-everett-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/tigers-designate-adam-everett-for-assignment.html#comments Sun, 06 Jun 2010 16:13:39 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/06/tigers-designate-adam-everett-for-assignment.html The Tigers have designated Adam Everett for assignment, according to the club's official Twitter feed. Danny Worth will be recalled from Triple-A Toledo in the veteran shortstop's place.

Everett re-signed his second one-year deal with the Tigers this offseason, following a .238/.288/.325 line in 2009. That limited production may have justified Everett's value when combined with his stellar glove (15.4 career UZR/150 at shortstop), but the 33-year-old has struggled mightily at the plate this season. Everett owns just a .185/.221/.247 line this year through 89 plate appearances. He's been hampered somewhat by a strained hamstring as well.

Worth, 24, was 8-24 (all singles) in 25 plate appearances with the Tigers earlier this year. Through 176 minor league PAs this season, he's hitting .287/.330/.354 while seeing time at third base, shortstop, and second base.

Detroit’s 2011 Payroll Situation https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/detroits-2011-payroll-situation.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/03/detroits-2011-payroll-situation.html#comments Sat, 13 Mar 2010 11:29:02 +0000 http://localhost/mlbtraderumors/2010/03/detroits-2011-payroll-situation.html Once the Tigers traded Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson for four pre-arbitration eligible players, the thought was that owner Mike Ilitch was trimming payroll after the recession hit Detroit especially hard. However, he then approved a massive extension for ace Justin Verlander as well as the signing of Johnny Damon, and now his team's Opening Day payroll is expected to be somewhere around $130MM, up from $115MM last year.

Lynn Henning of The Detroit News wrote about the payroll savings GM Dave Dombrowski will enjoy after the season, which are pretty significant. Here's a look at the money the Tigers have coming off the books after the 2010 season…

That's $57.025MM in savings right there, and the team would be wise to avoid letting Magglio Ordonez reach the 540 plate appearances needed for his $15MM option to vest.

Ilitch isn't shy about spending big on the free agent market, and he'll have the money available to add a big bat to complement Miguel Cabrera (Jayson Werth, Aramis Ramirez if he declines his option?) as well as another elite starter to a rotation that already includes Verlander, Rick Porcello, and Max Scherzer (Josh Beckett, Cliff Lee?) after the season. Keep in mind that I was just throwing some names out there off our 2011 free agents list, and that the Tigers have not been linked to any of those players in any rumors we've seen.

The Tigers are already in a position to compete in the AL Central, and once they shed some dead money after the season, they'll have a chance to jump ahead of the pack if they spend wisely.
