- Ken Davidoff of the New York Post suggests the Tigers could release Delmon Young to make a statement about the conduct they expect from their players without hurting their team in the standings.
- Jim Callis of Baseball America will be very surprised if the Royals don't select a college pitcher with their top pick in the upcoming amateur draft. Callis suggests the Royals could take Louisiana State right-hander Kevin Gausman with the fifth overall selection.

I can really see the Rays signing Shaky. They alway spot out bargain basement relievers and Shaky will be that, since here we are 5/1 with him still not with a team, thanks to his superb agent once again mis reading the market for one of his clients.
Shaky will be yet another top notch grab for TB if that indeed is his destination and hope the reason Cherrington isn’t bothering is because he has to make a decision soon on Miller and Cook.. Shaky should be able to help in another month or 2 an awful lot more than probably Cook and Miller combined.

hah, just busting on ya, you’re right though, Guerrero on the D’Backs as a DH for interleague play, pinch hitter most of the time & he can play the outfield in a pinch, they could do worse than signing him
Once Young is healthy, that will be 4 OF’s better than Guerrero, but I guess as a guy at the end of the bench you could do worse.
True, he could be better than what we can call advertised. He’s always been a guy who prepares well, and with his age and the lack of a job in May, he may be working harder than ever, which if he does get signed could prove huge.
LOL @pujols, i’m sure he does feel comfortable who wouldn’t with the amount of money he’s making he could care less if the team is in dead last, he has his money and two ws rings.
Yeah, it’s not like professional athletes are competitive and absolutely hate losing or anything.
*I don’t deny the fact that there are athletes who care more about money than winning, but until proven otherwise I’m more inclined to believe that any given athlete would much rather win than lose regardless of outside circumstances (money, etc).

Hard to figure why Pujols is struggling so mightily. Changing leagues is rarely a big deal for hitters. Guerrero is a good example but few good hitters suffer from changing leads. Is he out of sorts, older than we think, hurt, losing desire?

What about Mike Gonzalez to the Reds. They could move Chapman to the rotation since Gonzalez would take a left setup man spot.
The Tiger a hypocrites. Cabrera pull this crap twice and they covered for him. Don’t get me wrong. What Delmon Young did was completely wrong in every way, but what the Tigers are doing and what MLB is doing is just as despicable.
Delmon though isn’t a top-five hitter in the game and he doesn’t have a mega-money contract. Kick him to the curb I say.

To me the real shame is that in Baseball (and in such cases as the ones mentioned), doing “the right thing” is practically a convenience, and only to be employed when there’s something to be gained financially or image wise, or when it’s strategically useful – like getting rid of a player that isn’t working out as well as hoped.

Though to be fair, we don’t know exactly what he did or what was said/done to him. Sounds like an argument a few people should apologize for. But he’s the one in the spotlight.
IIRC, Cabrera got DUIs. Lots of MLB players get DUIs, both stars and scrubs. Nobody ever sees any consequences from the team or the league.
Young (supposedly) assaulted someone at the team hotel, actually inflicting violence on them and potentially committing a hate crime, which had a far worse result than a DUI where nobody got hurt.
NOTE: I’m not saying DUIs are acceptable and/or not dangerous. I’m all in favor of significant suspensions for players who get DUIs.
Isn’t it a fair counter to say that although Cabrera didn’t hurt anyone, he could have done MUCH more damage than Young? Like potentially kill someone…
I didn’t know MLB or the local authorities punished people for potentially committing a worse crime than they actually did commit.
You can kick or punch someone and be charged with assault. At the same time, you can drive around plastered until you either hit a wall/person, etc. If someone doesn’t get caught by the cops first, then what? And the MLB can do whatever they want as a private business.

I think its a fair counter.
But the *one* instance I can think of where a player’s drunk driving actually hurt someone besides the player, the player (albeit a scrub) got instantly suspended.
But then, to be fair, several players have been popped for beating wives/fiances and didn’t get suspensions from MLB for it, and there was actual assault involved.
The other big difference here is that Young did this in NYC and the New York Post and other media outlets can’t stop talking about it. The overall publicity of this means that the MLB is doing more about it.
I don’t think a DUI is on the level of physically assaulting someone. At least, I don’t see it that way. You’re obviously free to disagree, but I don’t see the parallels here other than the fact that drinking was involved.
Might fall into the category of where people who drink (or drink excessively) and drive think it is not a serious offense and people who either do not drink, or drink light and then drive think it is serious also.
The guy he assaulted didn’t end up in the hospital or anything. Not like Young delivered a beating. From what I’ve read, he pushed him to the ground.
Your chances of killing someone while driving drunk greatly exceed those while walking drunk.

Last Spring training did in fact throw a bottle of scotch at an arresting officer on his way to Spring training.

No he didn’t. He DRANK it infront of an officer. If he threw it, then there would have been all sorts of assaulting an officer charge.
Get your facts straight. Cabrera never threw the bottle, let alone at an officer in uniform.
I had much higher expectations for a cornerstone of the franchise with a $150+ MM contract 😉
Don’t blame the tigers, blame the CBA.
It’s the players union that put ridiculous alcohol clauses in the last CBA that basically allows players to be exempt from bad behavior if alcohol is involved.
I really do like Mike Gonzalez, I mean, talk about lefty specialist. I just don’t see where he fits, the pen has been great except Badenhop and the Rays aren’t cutting him, he has no options left and Howell and McGee are handling the left handers very well.
It’s funny because his splits have actually been very inconsistent over the years. For his career, though, he handles righties just as well as lefties with the exception that righties walk a bit more against him.
He dominated lefties last year, but was terrible against righties. The exact opposite was the case in 2010. It’s a bit strange.

Almost 100 PA’s without a homerun… its starting to get too late to say its too early. I know he pulled something similar last season, but man he still looks downright clueless at the plate and we’re coming up on May. Even through his terrible April in 2011 he still had 7 HR’s, nearly 20 RBI’s and a 1:1 BB/K. When do we start worrying? 200 PA’s? 300?
Crazy. The first full month of his entire career, not counting Octobers, with zero homers. I wonder what the MLB record for that is. Keep it up Albert!
Maybe KC should make another top pick like “Fabulous” Frank McCann again? Remember that guy from his FSL days in the mid 70’s.. 4th pick overall (1976) played ho-hum for several seasons and then long gone..
