A look at the Yankees players who will be arbitration-eligible after the season…
- First time: Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Dustin Moseley
- Second time: Boone Logan
- Third time: Sergio Mitre
- Fourth time: Chad Gaudin
Hughes and Chamberlain are the team's most interesting cases. Though Joba still has a respectable 3.79 career ERA, his recent work hasn't been great and the time spent in the bullpen has resulted in only 16 career wins. He won't get a massive salary. Hughes will be coming off a strong platform year, but his career numbers are similarly limited. He should fall short of $4MM.
Logan will probably be tendered a contract; it's not too risky and he showed promise against lefties when he was in the bigs. Gaudin, Mitre, and Moseley are the biggest non-tender candidates.
Henry Castellanos
What does carreer numbers have to do with a current arbitration case/contract? “Limited Carreer #’s are limited”, Phil Hughes has been in the majors how long? Like 2 Years and a half, and most of that time in the bullpen. The guy is having a 15-5 season WITH innings limit, and next year will pitch with NO innings limit, and he will “fall short” of 4MM$. I must be missing something.
Zack23
You are missing something. When players go to arbitration, they have to compare their stats with players who had similar stats with similar service time, that’s how they determine their salary.
It doesn’t go, “I’m 15-5, if I was a Free agent I’d get $15m, so I want $15m in my first year of arbitration.” – Phil and his agent can do that, except the arbitrator will rule against him in about 1.3 seconds.
Tim Dierkes
This is a concept that we at MLBTR need to do a better job of hammering home.
Zack23
I’m a fan of those new tables you guys have been doing when discussing what kind of long-term deal a guy can expect when he’s still arbitration eligible.
But you guys can only do so much, just look at the comments whenever the Elias rankings is updated. You guys post a link to how the rankings are developed, and people still complain why Reyes is ranked so low when he only played 30 games last year or that a pitcher has 15 wins this year so that means he must be in the top 5 of SP rankings
Slopeboy
Great explaination. Still I agree with Henry, Hughes can compare himself with his service time peers and command more than 4 Mil per year.
Tim Dierkes
To answer your first question, everything.
BaseballFanatic0707
Good riddance, Sergio Mitre.
NYY92
all i got to say is girardi please dont keep your love for sergio since he was a marlin when you were with him the guy consistently gets thrown around.just get rid of him and put someone else on the 40 man roster.
everyone but sergio of this group i would like to come back.mosleys pitched decent as a starter for us while pettites been gone.pitched deep into games and more importantly kept us in those games hes pitched.
logan has been great this year against lefties.he deffy deserves to be tendered.gaudin has his up and down moments,he can be unhittable one outing and the next get completely bombed.but he should be kept
Zack23
Gaudin won’t be tendered, his contract was 2.95m this year, and he’s required to get atleast that. So you’re not spending 3m+ on a long-man/spot starter- he’ll be non-tendered and sign with a bad team hoping he can win a rotation spot in spring training.
alxn
seems like he does that every year
bleachercreature
non-tender the crap out of mitre!! they’ll probably let Gaudin go (so he can sign with us again in April) I think they should give Logan a contract and Mosely arbitration
as for Hughes and Joba, they’ll probably both get arbitration, Hughes might get a contract though, we’ll see how he does the rest of the way and in the playoffs
Valk
Chamberlain will be signed and traded. Hughes will be signed to a long-term deal. Moseley won’t be signed. Logan will be signed. Mitre may be signed to a one-year deal. Also, the Yankkes would be idiots if they didn’t resign Gaudin.
Zack23
Why would the Yankees sign Hughes long term now? That is a strategy that clubs use to control their player for a year or two past their arbitration years- Yankees don’t need to do that.
Idiots if they didn’t resign Gaudin? Really?
Valk
Gaudin is really coming along as a good 7th inning guy. If it was up to me, I’d sign him to a 3-year deal. However I will say this, you’re right about Hughes.
Zack23
That has to be sarcasm about Gaudin
Valk
No, no it’s not, but he would certainly be a good middle reliever.
Zack23
You said you’d sign Gaudin to a 3year deal, and you’re not joking?
BaseballFanatic0707
Just don’t respond to him.
Valk
Psych. But I would sign him to a 1 year deal.
Slopeboy
Yanks would be very smart to tie up Hughes to a fair rate as they did with Cano a few years back. At the time Cano’s signing look very generous, now it’s a steal. Hughes is young, most likely is looking for security and would be willing at this point to sign for a few years at a reasonable rate. He looks as if he’s only going to get better. The jury is out on Joba, I’m thinking they will offer a modest deal, but nothing significant in case they decide to move him later on. Logan is a keeper,he’s finally getting it together and should be kept.I would bring back Mitre over Gaudin. Keep in mind Mitre was recovering from serious surgery last year, he’s been erratic this year, but seems to have better stuff than Gaudin. I would not tender Gaudin, pitchers like him are not hard to replace as needed.
Zack23
No they wouldn’t. Why would you gurantee Hughes 30m after one year of performance? If he turns into an ace that’s great, Yankees can pay him like an ace. If he struggles or gets injured, then they committed 30m for nothing.
What do you mean by offering Joba a modest deal? Do you mean multi-year?
NYY92
tend to agree with zach on this one buddy.its way to early to extend hughes, the guy has had one good full year as a starter and one great year of bullpen work.you have to see how he does without an innings limit as well to see if gets injured or not but im right there with you in your thought that hes a great pitcher cause he is.
as for joba, hes still a great pitcher just had a bad year which is cause by poor control and loss of velocity but hes still good
Slopeboy
I never mentioned any kind of money concerning either Hughes or Joba. My thinking is that they find out what he wants and go from there. Hughes is going to Arb with big leverage regardless of time served, as long as he does not come with stupid figures, he should come out on top.If he has another decent year next it’s the same thing. If he gets hurt he’s getting paid anyway.Sign him to something fair today and save in the future. Just like they did with Cano.As far as Joba goes, give him a slight raise for a couple of years that won’t hinder the ability to move him.
Mark S
Since his last minor league assignment, Boone Logan has been lights out against lefties AND righties.
Slopeboy
I forgot Mosely, I would tender him, as he can be used to replace Gaudin if need be.
Jsizzle456
I would non tender gaudin. And i would tender either Mosley or Mitre. They are both very similar. Sinker, slider guys who dont light up the radar gun. I bet the yankees would keep Mitre cause Girardi likes him. Here would be my pitching staff next year w/ and w/o pettitte.
W/ Pettitte
1.Sabathia (at least in 2010 hes the mvp of the yankees, not cano, pitching= WS wins)
2. Lee (why wouldnt he go to the best team that offers the most money to pitch w/ CC?)
3. Burnett (I dont like 3 lefties in a row.im not saying hes better than pettitte.)
4. Pettitte ( dont get me wrong, hes better than AJ)
5. Hughes ( He could even be put in the 3 spot and burnett fall to five)
W/o Pettitte
1. Sabathia
2. Lee
3. Burnett (Could split Cc and Lee)
4. Hughes (Could split Cc and Lee)
5. Nova (Give the kid a chance. He’s got very good stuff. He looked solid last night against the most powerful team in the bigs.)
Bullpen w/ and w/o Pettitte on the team.
Aceves
Mosley/Mitre (with a healthy aceves not both, onenof these guys could end up in SWB)
Chamberlain
Robertson
Marte
Logan
Robertson
Rivera
Also, idk if if the yankees will sign Kerry Wood, maybe they do idk. They could use another reliever. Possibly Rafael Soriano. Soriano can close and setup. Bu he’s a type A Free agant.
Jimbo
Kerry Wood and Soriano are going to be looking for closing jobs to maximize their money.
Yanks48
Mitre is coming back. Seems like Girardi has a hard on for him wen there are better options
